It's not taboo at all. I personally just don't like Mario 64.

I understand when looking from a retrospective. The general consensus seems to be that Nintendo improved their own 3D platformer formula with later releases. Except for Sunshine... That game didn't thrill me either.
I don't enjoy Super Mario 64 as much as I did when I owned a Nintendo 64. Playing it on the Wii, even with a better controller, it feels a little tedious. Massive props to it being a pioneer of the genre, but it hasn't aged as well as I hoped it would.
for SM64 at certain jumps I need to hold C> or < to make the jump or had to keep tapping C> to keep the camera where i wanted it. It doesnt really bother me never found it to be a problem.
Personally, I liked both of those, I always found both of them to be fun. Maybe they didn't age TOO well, but I always liked them both. 3D platformers have always been my favorite genre, so I've always enjoyed games like them. Now a fantastic 3D platformer on 64 would be Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, one of my favorite games of all time.
I always appreciated mario 64. It's awesome and you know it.
It's not awesome, at least the original N64 version. I need to try the DS version and see if the better camera makes the game better for me.
The DS version has no texture filtering. And we all know that texture filtering makes the N6FOUUUUR frigging awesome. I never had a problem with the controls in Mario 64 really, I just didn't like the music graphics or level design making me backtrack and collect junk.
Mario 64 was great. Just because trekkies and a few others don't like it doesn't change that. :p Personally I thought the camera in Mario Sunshine was the worst I've ever used. People claim it's user controlled, but it isn't. As soon as you start moving to make a jump it moves to and odd angle and totally fucks you. Plus it's too low to the ground a lot of the time. I might have liked Sunshine if it had better camera control and a little more water in Mario's pack. Actually I hated that stupid pack. I just wanted to run and jump and play. The squirt gun pack was annoying. I liked Sonic Adventure though.
I am not a big fan of either Super Mario 64 or Sonic Adventure, both in terms of camera and in other ways. That said, I do think Mario 64's camera is worse, and I don't understand why people think "it was new in 1996" is an argument. Being novel and being good are two separate things. Giving Mario 64 praise for having camera control seems backwards to me. I'd rather not have to mess with the camera at all. I think it would have been better if it didn't have camera buttons (maybe a "look around" button, but that's it). Either have the camera work properly on its own, or keep it in a relatively locked position. I never had camera issues with Crash Bandicoot.
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to j_factor again.
It's always the same thing when talking about N64 games:
Nintendo crowd: "Underrated! Epic! Groundbreaking! Superb! Unique! Revolutionary gameplay!"
Non-Nintendo crowd: "Mediocre game, nothing special."
I remember when this game first came out and I remembered how awesome it looked. However after playing it numerous times over the years, I NEVER LIKED Mario 64. My primary issues is judging and commanding jumps. You know that guttural grunt you make when trying a hard jump in the game? I found myself doing that nearly all the time in this game. Camera sucks, plain and simple. Another is actual game length. Having you do 15 area's 7-8 times over is a false sense of game length. I keep playing it now and again, hoping that there is something that gets better with age, but it doesn't.
I never got the whole "mario 64 looks awesome" bit, not even back then, the textures repeat beyond the point of sanity. Crash Bandicoot looked much better to me.
Early 3D platformers are rubbish by today's standards. Heck even PS2 "classics" I wouldn't bother with nowadays. Frankly it's good that 3D platforming isn't its own genre anymore.
