Reading the manual helps a little in this case. In the early 90s, tangible strategy guides were a big thing too! Like BOOKS. Not a Kindle thing! :D
I still have to finish Super Metroid. I did get stumped a couple times, but eventually I worked it out. Patience, grasshoppah! I'll finish it soon, but other games have distracted me. Popful Mail and Ys VI currently. Both have tricky labyrinths and can be frustrating. I prefer not using strategy guides unless there's an absurdly disorienting dungeon. Limewater Cave, I'm looking at you! In the DARK, even with the Rainbow Fragment!
The whole fun of it is solving it yourself, not relying on your hand held through it like watching a movie. The atmosphere of these games kick in when you know you're all alone to fend for yourself. Granted, in Popful Mail you have buddies!
The problem with Super Metroid being 30 cents is that I can't just buy it for 30 cents. I have to buy it for $10 since that's the lowest amount you can put in your Wii U funds. I will have money left over and NOTHING is ever going to cost 70 cents or $X.70. It's just like Xbox Live. It sucks my unwiped ass. I will not buy anything from any Nintendo or Microsoft store unless I can simply pay what the items costs and no more. Reason: I'm not an idiot with my finances.
I beat Metroid 2 *ONCE*, and I had help from maps in a issue of Nintendo Power.
I remember telling someone I beat "Link's Awakening" without ever dying, apparently this is a feat of superhuman ability.
Back in the day, games were about "challenge" not noobish shit that we see today. I remember teaching myself how to navigate through Metal Mech without taking damage in the first two levels. I also remember learning how to beat World of Illusion by watching a younger girl(a next door neighbor of mines at the time) play through it.
Quite a few of the posts which first appeared on Miiverse when the Super Metroid forum went live were pure comedy. People were getting stuck at the most mundane of places and situations. I just opened the forum and someone is asking how to shoot missiles. Seriously? My favorite was on the 15th when someone was stuck two minutes into the game where you grab the morph ball. They didn't know how to exit the room nor did they know how to change into the morph ball. Gaming nowadays is all about hand holding and tell you where to go and how to do it.
Such a rudimentary game causing headaches for newer gamers is astonishing.
Anyone remember this?: Attachment 6796
Yeah I called as a kid trying to figure out some Zelda 1 stuff.
