MSX Collecting

Well I have been debating whether to collect for the MSX. Now the problem is that MSX is more of a format rather than a single computer. So I now ask the following questions.
-What model of MSX should I get? I heard the Sony MSX 2s are pretty good.
-What games are worth my time?
-Where do I find one of decent quality without blowing money out of my ass?
-Is it like the Amiga where I can shove a Genesis controller in it?

I want the following specs for my MSX when I get it.
-FM sound expansion/chip
-At least an MSX2 standard computer.

when you can get one get either an msx2 or an msx2 +

they have more ram and more and better features are compatible with most if not all games
there are msx 2+machines with up to 512 kb of ram
the msx 1 only has 128 kb as a maximum
the msx 2 + tend to be japanese only

On that note, I wouldn't get a Sony HB-FB1-II again if I had the chance. I'd get a hit bit without question - that has proven to be an awesome line of computers - but I'd get an MSX2+ over an MSX2. I'd also make sure I got one with a built in floppy - I can't remember how much it cost precisely, but I spent a penny buying the external floppy for my MSX. And, because it interfaces via a cartridge slot, I had to get a cart extender to open up 2 cart spots on my HB-FB1-II.

I simply bought the MSX collection for the Saturn again.

the KONAMI MSX collection. It is missing games like Aleste and R-type.

It's also missing the Metal Gear games and Castlevania if I remember correctly.

Indeed, it's the MSX collection, not MSX2 collection. There are games which will run enhanced on an MSX2 like Gofer no Yabou 2 on the collection, but no MSX2-required games like Vampire Killer, Metal Gear, Contra, Space Manbow, etc.

Hell I know damn near nothing about the MSX it was just a retro collection I bought in 99 and I sold it for whatever reasons like an idiot.

and those will cost you an arm and a leg to get on the msx

its easier to buy mgs 3 subsistence or the mgs hd collection ( which is one hell of a collection up there with the ultimate megadrive collection )
then cough up 130 to 250 for metal gear 2 solid snake

I really want to play the MSX2 castlevania. From what I've seen and heard it sounds like Castlevania 2 and 1 got smooshed together to make SoTN Beta 1.2.

Maybe I'm not looking in the right place, but I have yet to find an MSX2+ under $400 shipped. And even then, the ones I see most are made by Panasonic, and their later MSX machines SUCK for playing Konami games with the SCC chip. They do like the AV Famicom: the on-board audio from the MSX is inaudible. If you want a good MSX2+ machine, find a Sony HB-F1XV or HB-F1XDJ.

And on the subject of high prices, if you want a customizable MSX, you could get a 1ChipMSX and upgrade the FPGA so the system simulates an MSX2+ rather than an MSX2. However, I do believe it too has severe volume balance problems with Konami games that use the SCC.

A DIY option is available as well in the form of homemade 1ChipMSX clones. You could purchase a Terasic DE1 or DE0 FPGA dev board and load modified 1ChipMSX code that's already upgraded to simulate an MSX2+. The stock code has audio problems and broken TV output (invalid color subcarrier frequency resulting in no color or spinning red and green lines), but I managed to tweak the code for the DE0 to use the 1ChipMSX's original YM2149 code as it's perfectly accurate minus a bit of garbage in the output, run the FPGA with a 53.693MHz oscillator so the TV output works in full color and added a separate permanent Composite output (which does not work when the video output is set to 31KHz). However, you will have to wire up two cartridge slots, audio output, and if you run my modified code using a 53.693MHz oscillator, you will have to wire the oscillator as well. A VGA to Composite/S-Video cable is required for Composite and S-Video output as well since the code uses the DE0 and DE1's on-board VGA R2R ladder DACs for video output unless you use my code with an extra Composite output, though this requires the addition of a 6-bit R2R ladder.

I personally own two MSX systems which I will mention in the Haul Thread as I have a large backlog of things I've purchased since February I need to make a post about. I think, at the very least, you should have a bog-standard MSX and an MSX2+ or any FPGA clone, be it a real 1ChipMSX running tweaked code or a homemade clone.
