My fav RPG? Final Fantasy VI. Game has it all. Epic story telling, a well developed cast of characters, great gameplay and a phenominal sooundtrack. Playing FFVI Advance on my DS right now. The only game I've been playing for the last two weeks.
You're all probably sick of hearing me rant anymore, but Shining Force is it.
Although there are tons of great RPG's. Ys comes to mind.
Somehow I am not surprised to see Final Fantasy X on 108 Stars list!
(Seeing as his avatar is Auron and all, and he is the best character in that game!)
I have done some things that I know I should not have done over the past few days! (i.e. playing FFVII when I am still trying to beat FFXII) I don't know, there is just something magical about FFVII that keeps me wanting to come back for more. I must digress though that some of that magic is lost after you have already beat the game and you know what is going to happen to the characters. I remember I was very sad when Nanaki's grandfater died, I almost cried (I know that sounds lame...)but I distinctly remember feeling no remorse when Aeris died. (Probably because I already knew it was going to happen anyway and who doesn't...peolple still talk about it and people even use cheat codes to bring her back to life. (Which I think is kinda stupid but.... I guess that just tells you the wierd fanbase of FFVII.)
Well I know alot of people that love FFVII and others that hate it. The people that hate it do confess that they do not play RPG's because they think they are boring. (I guess they play too much Halo or something)
That is not a fair question. That is not a fair question at all. I'd say it's a toss up between
Skies of Arcadia, obviously. Sure, the story wasn't the best, but the characters, setting, and gameplay more than made up for it.
Earthbound. High weirdness at its finest.
Xenogears. The deepest, most detailed story of all time. Period.
Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars. A little strategy RPG with some of the best, most rounded charcters of all time.
Super Mario RPG. It's a classic.
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga. Hilarious game, with the best gameplay out of all the Mario RPGs, if you ask me.
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Funniest of the Mario RPGs, with gameplay that approaches the fun factor of Superstar Saga.
Final Fantasy VI. The best of the FFs. Best story, characters, setting, music...the works.

The friends of mine that recommended against finishing VII actually played through the entire FF franchise (even the imported FC/SFC games) with the sole exception of FFVIII.
They have beaten Chrono Trigger multiple times each and played through almost all of the Breath of Fire games. There's more but I'd be going on a larger tangent than needed.
They play RPGs more than anyone I know, and they both dislike FFVII.
I'm shocked you haven't dug into the FFVII hate (or the general Squaresoft hate) among even RPG fans. Hell, my old neighbor in the dorms had the KINGDOM HEARTS II logo TATTOOED on his back. . .and even he disliked VII
I'll just go ahead and say that most of the FFVII lovers I've had discussions with don't bother to play anything made outside of SquareEnix (although not all of them admit to it).
I'll just link you to the greatest FVII rant I ever read

Ehh, as far as FFVII is concerned.. with it I once had a fantastic time, but I am almost positive that the ol' beaut would not stand up to my fond memories were I to play through 'er again. Overrated, sure.. FFVII was likely the one that ensnared many a gamer into playing RPGs, and there's a deep-rooted sentimentality and nostalgia there that clouds many opinions. But the game is also unjustly hated... popularity breeds a certain spiteful underground.
The people who stay nearly exclusive to the Square-Enix tried-'n-trues, they're missing out, simple as that. The same applies to those who purposely avoid Final Fantasy.
The thing about FF VII is: It was a great game for itīs time. But when a game is hyped that much, people tend to get annoyed by it and begin to hate it out of princip. And the more a game is glorified, the louder the voices of the haters are.Quote:

And FF VII does not look and play that great from todayīs standpoint of course. RPGs have kept evolving ever since, and so it is nothing like the "best RPG ever" anymore.
But you can still have a great time with it if you just ignore the hype and the hatred towards it.
The stigma carried with FFVII was style over substance.
That was what bothered RPG vets; the departure of distinct differences in play styles (depending on class) bypassed by the materia system.
But it did introduce lots of people to the console RPG. . .
and compared to older games, it was rather dark and conflicted, which speaks to many of the players that pick it up.
The game piqued my curiosity, which resulted in a purchase, but my defective copy prevented much progress and my friend's advice combined with my interest toward other titles made me put it off indefinitely.
I could seek out another copy, but the fanbase is so rabid that finding a copy these days warrants more effort than it's worth (what with original printings going for $70+ on ebay. . .GH copies for $40).
FFX gets also gets unfair criticism in my opinion, although in this case it does NOT stem from popularity. X was a departure from the PS1 FF formula and that seemed to upset the public, I couldn't begin to describe the amount of hate FFX gets for being linear and having a somewhat fruity main character.... while I was upset at first I eventually began to appriciate the nuances of the new style. For once (in an RPG) we got to experience the story of a nieve teen dork who grows into a man, but does NOT become an all-powerful hero. And on the topic of FFX's linear nature... the game was designed that way because the entire plot revolves around a pilgrimage, I though this was great symbolism.
Long story short, FFX got flak because it was not what longtime FF fans were expecting (althought the sometimes aweful voice acting didn't help either). If you take FFX by itself I think it is a great game, but as a massve, expansive, world-spanning quest it falls short... but it was never entended to be that type of game.
That game is the most boring RPG I have ever played. I wasted something like 70 or 80 hours on its extremely deep and detailed TIRESOME story, uglier-than-the-old-people-at-my-work-3D-graphics, battles more suckier than all the vacuumcleaners in the world and .. ahh EVERYTHING ELSE! I got to the final dungeon where I just had enough of the crap and sold the bloody game to never ever see it again. I was in my teens while playing it. I was a Square and RPG addict who thought anything Square or RPG was gold. After Xenogears I realised it wasn't true. Now I only buy good stuff, meaning it doesn't matter if the new Iron Maiden album or Final Fantasy game are part of what was my favourite band/franchise, I don't waste money on 'em if they do suck. Thank hell for growing up to be an adult!Quote:

Yeah, and why didn't they just cast the Phoenix summon on her? You can survive easily having Sephiroth smashing all planets on you with the Super Nova attack, but not when stabbed by a little kitchen knife through your back? Makes no sense. At least in Phantasy Star II and IV there are "logical" reasons they cannot resurrect those dying ladies.
Well, dartagnan I play other role playing games besides just FF, and if I recall Chrono Trigger was made partly form the guy that created Final Fantasy! Anyways I have played many rpg's that are not square-enix games. I have played Golden Sun, Shin Megami Tensei, the pokemon games, Diablo I, & II, Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, Elder Scrolls III Morrowind, Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion, and many other I do not feel the need to name. You also make it seem like that the only people that play FF games only play FF games. Can you prove this? I think I just disproved you.
Just because your friends say it sucks doesn't mean you won't like it. I also see that you have stated you have never got through the game. Maybe you should just play it and ignore both sides of the argument then come up with your own verdict. I believe you have no right to criticise a game you have not really played, and only going by what your friends say. They may be right, you may not like the game. What I am saying is you should not always do what your friends say, you may be missing out on a good game.
Also I have to say that I am pretty excited about Blue Dragon for the Xbox 360. Yes, Dartangnan it is not a Square-enix game. It is made by the same creaters on Chrono Trigger (yes, that also means that the guy that made FF is helping to make this game.)
This goes out to nate, I love FFX, I guess some people cannot handle change. Alot of people scoffed at Final Fantasy XII for the change in the battle system, I personally like it. It's nothing revolutionary, but I think it ended some of the tendum of past FF games.
Earthbound. Abso-freakin-lutely hands down #1. Nothing else can touch it in my mind. Not even Chrono Trigger, which is a distant second.
