Controversial gaming opinions you have

1) Whenever someone lists their favorite game in a series, such as Castlevania or Super Mario Bros, and they list the most popular one, such as Symphony of Night being their favorite Castlevania, I tend to believe the person has never actually played something in the series, and is just saying this to be cool.

Explanation:I always hate it when a topic on a forum comes up about "Best Mario Game" because 95% of people will say Super Mario Bros. 3. The same is said for Super Castlevania 4 with Castlevania. I honestly believe they are saying it just to sound popular and hip. This may just be from personal experience, but I have never found the most popular titles to be my favorite. Super Mario Bros 1 will never be beaten IMO, and Castlevania 2 is honestly my favorite Castlevania. Also, AVGN (Who I cannot stand now) said his favorite Castlevania was Super Castlevania 4 and the prices for it on Ebay and Amazon went up by at least 20 dollars.


2) Skyrim is a horrible game and I think less of people who say it's one of their favorites.

This kinda ties into my first opinion, but Skyrim is just a bad game no matter which way you spin it. Oblivion as broken as it was, was twice the game Skyrim is. It's a horrible RPG and a game designed for cavemen, it's as shallow as the kiddie pool in the middle of the Mojave Desert on the hottest day in the summer

3) Mobile gaming will take over Consoles

Console sales and video games are slipping, and they've dropped around 20% each year, that means from about 5 years ago, 2008, video game sales have dropped over 100% I think 2011 was the worst with 33% drop, but don't quote me on that. Meanwhile, in 2014, the newest ipad will be stronger than a Wii U, according to data provided by NVIDIA. Mobile games are getting better, and we are getting more ports of classic games. Many developers have pretty much jumped ship over to mobile, like Sega and EA. Square Enix is also releasing all of the classic Final Fantasy games onto the App Store.

4) Older games are better than newer ones

Anybody who recognizes my name should know I believe this, but I'm tired of explaining myself over and over again to people who have put a brick wall where their brain use to be. It's not just my personal opinion, it's backed up statistically and factually. By comparing the games of today to their older brothers, we can clearly see how games have become "stupified"

Recently, I forget the year, they did a study of pop music from the 1950s all the way until today, and determined that Pop music was indeed getting stupider over time. The music was less complex, the notes weren't as frantic, harmonies and vocals weren't as complex. The same thing is also being done with movies as well, just look at how many Fast and Furious movies we have now. HOW MANY MOVIES CAN THEY MAKE OF PEOPLE DRIVING FAST IN CARS!!!!!!????

There are still good games being released today, I'm tired of people claiming this and only listing 1 or 2 games to back their claim. Yes, there are good games, but that doesn't excuse the fact that the market has more crap in it now than it did back in the glory days of Sega vs Nintendo. In fact, we're pretty much tied with the years right before the crash in terms of crap. Sure, Mcdonalds and Wal-Mart can't make games, but the developers that should be giving us quality are giving us CRAP.

I'm sorry but skyrim is awesome, just like with every other Bethesda games. Most of the people I know that hates RPGs ended up really liking skyrim. And getting hooked playing it.

I'm with you there. Skyrim is one of those games that brought classic RPG imagination, fantasy, and creativity up to the present day with a fully realized world. Bethesda outdid themselves.

This stuff barely qualifies as controversial.

I have never, and will never like the N64. Wonderful potential hampered by blurry graphics, poorly designed controllers, and clinging to yesterdays (even at the time) storage medium.

I would rather go without gaming than own an N64.

2. I never played Skyrim. It is a Steamwork game. Ive been boycotting everything Steam for years ( and no i wont play it on a console ). I dont really feel like im missing out.

3. No, they are two different markets. The mobile market is a growing market and the Home console is a saturated market, hence the impression. One will not fully replace the other. Unless they create a portable device that can also be used as a home console on a tv and is just as powerful but we are not there yet.

4. I somewhat disagree, even though I personally mostly prefer my old games. Mainstream gaming probably got worse, ok, mostly because it tries to copy on the movie industry. But gaming in general i would not say so. Also, I suspect you remember mostly all those good games of the past and somewhat forget the torrent of abysmal crap that was also released along them.

I also have a problem with the argument that games today became "stupified". Some of the most complex, brain intensive gaming you can have is actually some the modern competitive gaming. Ever tried to play Starcraft 2 competitively? To stay at the higher ladder levels ( say diamond level and up ), the amount of skill and concentration required is pretty insane. Also, some of the more insane installment of the shmup scene are modern games.

Where I agree with that statement is about game music. Game music seriously went down the shit-hole. Where are all those awesome epic tunes from the 90s? Somehow I think the fall started with redbook audio and with it came the pressure to be mainstream. All those nerds making the chiptune music in the old games got progressively cleared in favor of hired "professional" musician and popular artists. There are exceptions of course and even considering the Indie scene, where alot of little gems can be found, I still find its a notable drop from the 90s.

I think he means overall or pound for pound, if so then I agree. Yes there are current games that might be thoughtful gems, but just seemed there were more back then and basically you had to figure out more stuff on your own. For instance, the maze in ROShinobi had me stumped a couple times, but I got it. I don't think this generation has patience for that or even Ninja Gaiden on XBox. Both had puzzles but overall were difficult action games in a way. It seemed more puzzle games existed then too. The combination of action difficulty and problem solving seemed almost perfect then. Now it's grab a gun, look with a first person view (doom 3000) and shoot your way to victory. You don't see much of the problem solving, maybe because it's all about call of duty but. Even with a cheat code Robocop vs Terminator is a hard. But super duper mario 37 or metroid 89 2d games on Wii U will be a hand holding contest compared to past. Even with the extensive internet of today, a game being very old and beaten by 3 generations by now, people still get stuck in super metroid. Other than that, I totally agree with you.

Castlevania 4 isn't even the best Castlevania of its era. One of the most overrated games ever. It's a pretty good game, but not really worthy of the status it has gained. I'll take Bloodlines any day. It just flows better than SCV4. Bloodlines is the type of game I can just play over and over again like most of the other games in the series. SCV4 plods along and is uneventful for the first 1/2 to 2/3rds before getting interesting. From the 16-bit ish era I'll take Bloodlines, Dracula X: Chi No Rondo, and Dracula X68000 / Castlevania Chronicles over 4.

I wouldn't necessarily say that people who have SOTN as their favorite haven't played the series. Issues aside you get a lot of bang for your buck with SOTN, tons of enemies/bosses, tons of weapons/items, multiple playable characters (even if Richter and Maria's games are half-baked), alternate endings, a badass intro sequence, etc. So from a quality standpoint SOTN deserves its place.

I get what you're saying though. People might say "Castlevania 4 is my favorite in the series" when they've only played that game and none of the others in the series.

As for unpopular opinions:

1) The N64 Castlevanias are the best 3D games in the series and great action/adventure games in general. It pissed me off when Lords of Shadow or whatever it's called came out and people were saying "finally a good 3D Castlevania!" The N64 Castlevanias didn't even get bad reviews at the time. It wasn't until a bit later that people started to really slag them. And I'm sure a lot of that hate isn't by those who have actually played the game, just people who are following a trend and what they perceive to be the popular opinion.

Legacy of Darkness is one of those games I always seem to end up playing whenever I dust off the N64. It's not perfect but there's a lot to like about it. The atmosphere is outstanding, with interesting touches like the area going dark right before you fight a hellhound (and you realize shit's about to go down). It's well balanced too. There are a lot of intense fights with enemies and tough platforming sections, and then there are interesting portions like the Villa, where the game slows down and shifts into somber Resident Evil-ish puzzle solving. There's also a good amount of replayability. 4 different characters, each relatively unique (different levels / boss fights / objectives), and alternate endings.

tl;dr equations:

Castlevania + 4 = Overrated
Castlevania + 64 = Underrated

EDIT: Awww here it goes, I'll go with a really controversial opinion,

Castlevania 64 > Castlevania 4

Master of Darkness on sms > Castlevanias on nes. No way I'm trying to be cool by saying that, MOD is a CV knock off who 60% of gamers and 99% of hipsters never heard of. Hell yeah Dracula X on tg16cd. Yeah.

I prefer carts over optical media, and also think Castlevania 64 is a kick ass game.

I haven't played Castlevania 64 since it came out, but I remember renting it and liking it. I was shocked to play a Castlevania game in 3D.

The Dreamcast is way overrated
Yoshi's Island and Paper Mario series are nauseating.
Harvest Moon is boring and tedious; Farmville for "gamers".
Earthbound was garbage.
PS2 RPGs by and large suck.
Anyone who spent thousands of dollars on a NWC cart is the subject of "a fool and his...", the only exception being if they sold it to make a profit.
The obsession with terribly bad but obscenely expensive games is what's killing this hobby: Cheetahmen, Earthbound, NWC, the dozen 2600 games that never saw actual retail for good reason.
High end shmups are way inflated.
3D is overrated, and only works for racers and FPSs.
Sega only beat Nintendo in the fifth generation.
I absolutely hate voice acting in video games. I think it just barely works in games like Metal Gear Solid or Fable, but overall, voice acting is just unbearable. Portal is the one exception.

Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Castlevania IV are my favorite games in their respective series. SMB3 took SMB1 and just made it an explosion of flavors and colors. SMB has its rightful place for starting it all, but SMB3 perfected it. SMW polished it, but in doing so rubbed away some of the features. Same with Castlevania 1, 3, and 4. I haven't spent that much time with 2 (or Rondo either), though, and consider Symphony of the Night and other Metroidvania games outside the original series.

Only trendy gamers list Nintendo as their *only* favorite system. Games don't begin and end with Nintendo.

I dislike the Game Gear, Master System & Dreamcast (mostly due to their library not appealing to me).

Final Fantasy is the most overrated series of RPGs ever made, there hasn't been one that has been a masterpiece. Square has made better games on each console for every generation there has been a Final Fantasy game on, except MAYBE the NES/Famicom.

Call of Duty isn't as bad as people say it is, but the single player mode on every single game except for Modern Warfare 2 and the original Black Ops have mostly been shit.

Crash Team Racing is the best kart racer of its generation.

Bioshock 2 is better than the first game in every single way.

That's all I've got for now.

1. I've played just about every Castlevania and all the Mario games up until the GC era, and I can easily say that SotN and SMB3 are my favorites. I really don't care what your opinion of me is because of that because both of those games are incredible and have given me countless hours of entertainment. If you were a NES owner in the late-80s you can remember the build up to SMB3 and what a huge deal it was. This video sums it up well

2. While Skyrim is not a favorite game of mine, I enjoy it and find it to be a solid and immersive RPG experience. I'm not a big RPG guy, although I consider the SMS Phantasy Star to be an all-time favorite game of mine, but I put quite a few hours into Skyrim and consider it a great and worthwhile game.

3. I can't see phone and tablet games putting consoles out of commission, but I can see them bringing handhelds to their eventual demise. I think that as long as people are sitting on their couches watching TV, there will be a console market regardless of the mobile game options.

4. Retro v Current is just personal preference. I still enjoy both, although i will say that I am not very hopeful about what the next gen holds in store for us. It doesn't matter when a game was made though, if it's any good I'll play it.

Out of every controversial opinion expressed here, this is the only one I can't accept. I'll give you one way: Story. Bioshock has it, Infinite has it, 2 has none.

Now for mine:
- The N64 is overrated tosh where I can barely make a list of 10 games I want to play. Also the controller sucks

- Castlevania 4 was a step backwards, the 8 direction whip is a *problem* not a feature.
- Contra 3 is terrible. Slowdown and nauseating top down stages. Hard Corps is 1000x better.
- The new tomb raider sucks (it's everything that's wrong with modern gaming)
- Every halo after the first sucked (The weapons in 2 felt like toys, the campaign abysmal, bugged up the ass, 3 was even worse, ODST was a joke, and 4 is a total cash-in on what should be a finished story). Reach was ok I guess, story still sucked though.
- The first modern warfare game is actually really good IMO (not the rest though).
- Baldur's Gate is boring. So is Planescape Torment but that one has a story that can actually hold you.
- Starcraft 2 is abysmal, no it's not just mediocre, *abysmal*, one of the worst RTS games I've played.
- Phantasy Star 4 can't hold a candle to the best RPGs on the SNES (not really controversial outside of this site :p, story is better in PS4 though)
- Lunar the Silver Star is terrible.
- Starfox is barely playable.
- Super Mario Kart is overrated and having half the screen unavailable in single player is ridiculous.
- Robo Aleste is better than MUSHA, and so is Spriggan.
- Ninja Gaiden SMS > Ninja Gaiden NES
- Symphony of the Night is good, not great.
- The song Metal Squad in Thunderforce 4 is *terrible*.
- The sim parts in Act Raiser are really bad. They fit the game, but I really wish they were better or just not there.
- Final Fantasy 7 is overrated, every game following is even worse, complete downward spiral. 6 was great though.
- The first Guild Wars is abysmally bad.
- Skyrim is really overrated.
- The Metal Gear series is really overrated too. MG 2 (on the MSX that is) was good. And the first MGS too. The rest? cutscene fests and nonsensical plots.
- Landstalker really isn't that good. Story is pretty good but the gameplay isn't. Lame combat, even worse platforming.
- The RPG aspect of System Shock 2 makes the game worse, not better.

I absolutely hate voice acting in video games. I think it just barely works in games like Metal Gear Solid or Fable, but overall, voice acting is just unbearable. Portal is the one exception.

I've found some games with good voice acting. Imagine duke nukem 3d without the voice talent of Jon St. John, it would suck. Voice acting is like any other acting, you can do it well or you can do a terrible job at it. People never complain about the games it was done well in.

Truth be told, I can't stand metroidvania. Metroid did that genre much better. Do I think SOTN is a bad game? Hell no, just not my thang.

Win! I never have understood what people see in the original zelda, that game is terrible. I even prefer the original metroid over the first zelda. The only great thing about the first zelda was the introduction of battery backed game saving.

Agreed, it's a whip, not a freaken gun you need to aim. The charm of classic castlevanias is learning to live with more realistic controls like proper walking speed and not being able to change your direction mid-air like a ninja.

I love contra 3. The top down stages are useless though. Contra 3 is too short it needs to be longer. I love hard corps but that game is too....hard!

Well, you could say the same about the snes and the nes if that's your argument. Both the nes and snes have huge libraries.

I just don't like storytelling in games. A simple plot at the back of the box is enough for me. So far (20+ years of gaming), i played only 2 or 3 games with an interesting story. Every other story driven game is meh for me. And i hate cutscenes.

I also prefer to feel like i control myself in the game world, not someone else. That's why i hate it when the main character has a voice and a personality. It doesn't help that most video game protagonists are badly written stereotypes, with cliched personalities and terrible voice acting.

I hate JRPGS and their anime aesthetics and characters. Too much decoration on scenery and character clothing, random/weird art direction with "stuff" poking out of other "stuff", pedophilia, feminine males, obnoxious and downright annoying characters and voice overs... oh and random turn based battles, i always hated those.

I hate the Halo series. Before that, FPS was my favorite genre. With Halo becoming a mainstream success FPS games got dumbed down and of course COD finished the job. Now its one of my least favorite genres.

1. Fuck FPS games, Doom was interesting because it was one of the first games that actually made 3D shooting fun to play, and Duke was a great improvement on that,
but then we got a tidal wave of crap FPS games, a wave that only stopped when Half-Life added some much needed story to the bland shooter genre,
and just when you thought the genre was saved.. we got a shitload of lame WW2 games and COD's that dumbed down the action part, and changed the normally interactive story parts into lame cutscenes, cutscenes everywhere and then some lame action.


2. Fuck the Japanese art style, emo goth boys with belts, BELTS EVERYWHERE! It's so fucking stupid to look at,
so every little boy who turns out to be a hero suddenly decides to change from his normal clothes into a damn S&M outfit?


3. Fuck the Sega Saturn, fuck it up its stupid ass! so this is what they killed the Genesis for? a black box with a bunch of lame games?
and everytime someone even speaks negativly about the Saturn all we get is "AH BUT YOU HAVE TO IMPORT THE BEST GAMES!"
and then you ask "what are the best games?" and you get a bunch of weird Japanese names, of games that.. are fucking flying schumps with robots and shit.


4. Sega got Lucky with the Genesis, they failed to market the SMS properly, and then failed with the Saturn, and then failed with the Dreamcast!


5. Fuck tablet games, fuck 'm! not even gonna explain why, I just hate the idea of playing games on tablets, seems like a step back.


6. Donkey Kong Country fucking rocks the Snes!! it was awesome both in gameplay and graphics and sound!

faces, but real people! sure not all the digitized games were great, but the art style was impressive to me! as long as it wasn't choppy.


8. Skyrim was a great game, I don't care about it being "dumbed down", all I'm angry about is how shittily it was supported by Bethesda,
where are the great impressive DLC's? the ones we got were shit, even Fallout 3 had more impressive DLC's!


9. Resident Evil sucks these days, with #4 the series changes so much that it just wasn't RE anymore, it became a lame 3rd person FPS shooter,
and what is it with Capcom's stupid storylines? RE has become some sort of stupid soap drama, the storylines are now as bad as they are
in the damn movies they made out of them, no wait.. they are even worse then the movie storylines!

Amen to this! They don't have alot of variety, that's for sure! I wish modern anime more resembled the western roots it had such as when Osamu Tezuka was pioneering the artform. And japanese RPGs are just as cliched as western ones.

What we need is more new 2D games modeled after the C64 or Amiga western aesthetics. Viva la Amiga!

With regard to tablet/smartphone gaming, the only thing it proves to me is that traditional handheld pricing is absurdly high. Sometimes you get as much content as a $40 Vita/3DS game with a fraction of the price. DKR3D retails for $35 (essentially a port), yet a bigger game such as GTA III goes for $5. Granted, cart costs are a factor but the eShop prices are just as ridiculous.

Japanese-exclusive fighting games like X-Men vs Street Fighter, Street Fighter Zero 3 and Darkstalkers 3 are why I bought the system. I'm not into shoot 'em ups like you, but there are some good games on the Saturn to be had. Duke Nukem 3D, a few arcade collections, Sonic R (I like it...), Capcom fighters, Sega's 3d fighters like Virtua Fighter 2, Last Bronx and Fighters Megamix...I find the system worthwhile, even if there are a small of games I like on it.

I miss the classic "tank controls" style of gameplay too. Resident Evil 5 and 6 still sit on my shelf, only played like 20 mins of each of them and got bored of 'em. 6 was too much of QTE fest for me to bother with it.

I have over 400 hours logged into Oblivion and around 150 hours logged into Skyrim, I clearly do not hate it because it's popular.


It's such a horrible excuse for an RPG. The combat is dull, the world is boring and lifeless, there's no consequences for your actions, there's no risk/reward system, your skill points don't matter, caves are linear as hell and have a magic door that incredibly always puts you right at the start of the dungeon after you've gotten to the end, even though logically it doesn't make any sense of how a door could be right there considering you've just hiked a good two miles into the cave.

Let's look at a typical rpg, you need like 4-5 points in hacking before you can even begin to hack something, but in Skyrim you don't need any points in lockpicking to successfully pick a lock. That's crap. Why does my dagger wielding assassin have the same skill with an Axe of Bleeding Death? It doesn't make any sense.

It's a horrible RPG, and just about every RPG ever made is better than it. I'm the head of the companions, leader of the dark brotherhood, arch-mage of the college, speaking of that how am I the freaking arch mage even though I only know a fireball spell, leader of the thieves guild, and guards still treat me like I am common street trash. It's a horrible, horrible, game. Popular or not.
