I'm sick of people saying Dark Souls/Demons Souls is a hard game.

All over the internet we have people saying Dark Souls/Demons Souls is some retro gamers wet dream because of how hard they are. No, these games are not hard.


They are fake hard. They use cheap tactics and beginners traps to confuse and enrage newer players, and they also do stupid things like not allow you to pause and lose all of your items when you die, or how all of the enemies respawn after you save. The minute you figure out enemy patterns the game becomes no more difficult than any other modern video game, and that is stupidly easy.


I can't tell you how many times I died in Dark Souls or Demons Souls because of things I had no control in. For example, the game throws traps at you all the time, traps that are impossible to avoid unless you knew they were coming in the first place, which you wouldn't if you were a new player. Now half of your health is gone and the big boss is coming up. Not to mention when you are brought back to life you only have a quarter of your original health anyway, putting the odds even more against you.

People, this is not what makes a game hard, it's what makes a game stupid. The only remotely difficult thing about the game is learning the enemy patterns.

I am by no means saying I breezed through these games with no issues, but what I am saying is that all these games do is punish the player for no reason, they rely on trial and error to get through the game, by the end of the game you are no more skilled than when you started it, sure you'll be able to predict enemy patterns easier, but the only reason the game is so hard because the game forces the player to shoot himself in the foot constantly.

Look at a game like Castlevania for example. One of the most frustratingly difficult rooms in the entire game is the hallway before Death, where you are fighting Medusa Heads and Axe Knights (I think it's death) At that point you screw trial and error, the only way to get past that part is by sheer skill and skill alone. The game has been preparing you for this moment all along however, and you're going to have to put those skills to the final test.

I only played Dark Souls. So i will comment based on that.

I will agree than the game has some cheap ways to kill you. But this is not why the "hardcore gamers" who prefer hard games love it.

Its the complete lack of hand holding. That's the secret ingredient. You are dropped in this unknown, dangerous world and the game pretty much says "screw you, figure out things by yourself". There are no guides, no pointers and the game doesn't explain you every single thing. Can't figure where to go? Well, explore more then. The game has incredibly good non-linear level design with shortcuts etc its almost like Super Metroid in that regard. Is this area too dangerous? Maybe it would be best to go somewhere else first until you find better equipment. Did a boss just raped you? Well, you must find a way to kill him by yourself. Think about what magic you could use. What defensive/offensive technique or what weapon. And every time you overcome obstacles it feels very rewarding.

That's what makes Dark Souls a good game and that's why many "hardcore gamers" love it. Its not for everyone and definitely not for casual gamers who are used to hand holding in games.

Seriously, this dude bitches more than most of my ex girlfriends. Who spends all day looking at what games other people find difficult? What happened to the days of enjoying a game on your own and not picking on people who find it difficult?

Oh man, that game is TOUGH. WITHOUT using a walkthrough and relying on good ol' communication, I asked a buddy of mine how HE got through a particularly tough area.

There is probably an underlying reason for that, problems in real life often manifest itself in the subconscious, which is then expressed verbally.

but.. in today's world there's a lot of digital traffic going on, so a lot of negative expressing is also done this way.

I've had similar issues myself for many years now, an unhappy life causes complaining and negative expressing,
which is not often understood by the people around us.

It's kind of a sickness of the mind, and can't really change until you accept that you have it.

even then it's a long road back to feeling happy.

So to GKDAIR I say.. Don't be sick of people and their opinions, I know it hurts but there's nothing you can do, just walk away
and don't give it any more thought, Go outside and ride a bike, go for a walk, work out! anything to stop these negative thoughts
from taking over your daily life.
