I absolutely agree with you that the Genesis version of this soundtrack is much better than the Arcade's.
I know the Arcade version is using the YM2151 (OPM) chip, and I do not recall it using a sampler chip to supplement the music, though no doubt there was a sampler chip on the arcade board for voices and sound effects. So if I'm right they didn't use the sampler chip for music, then what we had were eight channels of four-op, eight-algo, sine-only FM that was doing everything. By contrast, the Genesis version, using the YM2612 (OPN2) FM chip as well as the SN76489 PSG chip would've had five concurrent four-op, eight-algo, sine-only FM channels, FM 6 would've been sacrificed to have the DAC sampler channel for that powerful percussion, and then the PSG would've been kicking in the dazzling high end, for a total of 10 channels (less FM channels, but more total channels) vs 8, and a more diverse sonic palette.
I'm not surprised the Genesis version sounded better in that context.
My favorite track from this game is the final stage theme "Kao Kao Kao" (trans. "Face Face Face") for all the screens of the boss' face in the background...I presume?
Anyway, here's the Genesis version:
Here are a couple great ones that are on my mind - one from the TG16, and one from the Genesis:
The TG16 track is Stage 3 from Dead Moon:
Here's a piece that is not only a really compelling composition with 6/8 timing, really great bass and percussion, a nice sing-songy melody, and great harmony voices, but also does a pretty good job of showing off the TG16's sound capabilities. "12-bit" my butt! TG16 plays just fine with the big boys!
And here's a fantastic number from the Genesis. The game...okay, it may not be so great (though I like it anyway), but its soundtrack...oh...killer! The track I wanna play is the very first piece of music you hear once the game proper starts....and it starts off with a bang!
This one's called "Statts" from Sword of Vermilion:
This track DOES use the PSG, but you have to strain to hear it. It's not obvious. Very very faint in the mid, in the lower/mid register is a soft drone....that's the PSG. The pitch is higher during the "chorus", but it's still just a very faint drone. Interesting, subtle use of the PSG to slightly "plump" up the track, if you ask me. :)
Man I didn't know about the Dead Moon soundtrack, it sounds really nice. 10/10.
Try not to bob your head while listening to this. JUST TRY, I DARE YOU!!

This thread needs an epic genesis music bump. ( Because I prefer the original to the remix above ;) )

Oh, that is good to know! Those chips make a lot more sense out of what I was hearing listening to the arcade version. I thought they didn't sound up to OPM standards. I suppose I should do a better job of fact checking myself when it comes to arcade games. OPM is so predominate, that I sorta just assume it's the one being used sometime.
Thanks for the correction!
It has been a while since I've contributed to this thread, come to think of it. How's about a soundtrack face off?
Although it's really short, I really love the soundtrack to the original Shinobi. I really love the arcade original, but on balance, I think I might like the PC Engine version even better.
Here are both versions...you decide! :)
We'll hear the Arcade (FM) version first:
Now, the PC Engine (Wavetable):
^ Hard to say honestly. I can't decide. I think the arcade might blend a bit better but I like some parts more on the PCE.
I really like those '' Console sounds better than Arcade'' Examples. Capcom SNES games anyone?
Max, I definitely agree that Arcade vs console comparisons are very interesting and a lot of fun!
I'll have to respectfully disagree with you, though, on the Capcom SNES thing for the most part. I almost always prefer the Arcade FM originals to the SNES lo - Fi PCM counterparts. But I will admit that that stance probably puts me in something of a minority, and I can also at least understand the other perspective.
As far as Arcade vs SNES in general, I very rarely favor the SNES. In terms of Arcade vs PC Engine, I'd say probably 50/50. And I'd say probably 60/40 Arcade on Arcade vs Genesis, maaaaaaaaybe 50/50.
Oh and as far as the Shinobi face off, there are definitely individual voices that I like better on each version. It's just, taken as a whole, for the most part, I like PCE'S "bouquet" better. :)
I find this topic interesting too.
What was surprising to me is just how many Genesis/MD soundtracks destroy their arcade source material. Sure Midnight Resistance is one, but also Dangerous Seed, Darwin 4081, Snow Bros, Zero Wing and Chelnov all sound vastly better IMO. The early Capcom ports by Sega are also more refined, stuff like Double Dragon 2 and Vapor Trail are on par or better on MD depending on what side of the bed I get out of in the morning etc.
As far as I'm concerned the MD only really met it's match when pitted against the Neo Geo's powerful sound tech.
