I dunno. I mean, I like my Retron 3. But I like it as a backup, not a replacement.
If it works as well as they claim, then yeah, I'll buy one.

Just because someone wants to emulate rather use a clone does not make someone a pirate. That's the same as saying if you use a flash cart your a pirate.
If you want to own the real thing then buy a actual Genesis, SNES, NES, GBA, or what have you. You would sort of be a hypocrite for saying that and end up buying a clone.
I meant mods for GOACs (NOT AtGames clones, these do not run on GOACs, they're software-emulated trash). But yeah, generally, the audio out of GOACs is meh due to lousy audio amps, mainly because Geniclone manufacturers don't put enough resistance on the YM3438's outputs. They're VERY strong, requiring AT LEAST 100Kohm resistors directly at the YM3438's outputs in order to prevent any audio distortion. Most Geniclones, though, use 10Kohms, which is far too weak and causes low-frequency sounds to be overdriven and distort. Some don't even have audio amps, but rather have just a basic mixing circuit, making the audio output very low. This is the case with the RetroBit Gen-X and RetroGen Adapter; they just have a basic mixing circuit with no amp. If that kind of circuit would have been made with big resistors (100Kohms for the YM3438, 150Kohms for the SN76489 as I've done on the Mega Amp), the audio output would be far too low, but would be free of distortion and properly balanced between FM and PSG.
I should buy some SM-801 GOACs and sell some standalone Geniclones with full compatibility (Sega CD may be an issue, but I'll look into that once I actually get an SM-801). I specifically say the SM-801 as that chip is a full-fledged GOAC with all the necessary signals for full cartridge compatibility as well as RGB video output, which I would pass through a CXA2075 to amplify and encode to Composite and S-Video, and have a custom Component cable with an on-board BA7230LS so you can use the cable on either the Geniclone or the 32X should you choose to attach one on the clone (it will have a 9-pin Mini-DIN for RGB output but standard plugs for Composite and S-Video).
you did notice the part about consoles getting thin on the ground yeh ?
and come on most people who have flahs carts and emulate tend to pirate anyway
Hey, don't jump on that assumption with flash carts. While some do, I use flash carts as a means to load music rips on original hardware so I can sample music from games. This is the main reason why I own a PowerPak, and also because lugging around x amount of NES cartridges from Montreal to Mascouche and back is a pain in the ass (I used to do this often when visiting a good friend who lives there, but with the PowerPak, I just loaded all the games I own on the cart and take that with me instead).
Hardly, by that time when they do get to rare levels we will be long dead.
I sure the hell didn't buy my flash cart to pirate, I did it for homebrew, its capabilities, and to backup my games so I don't have to dig them out every time I want to play one of them. Here in the states you are legally allowed to make a backup for your personal use, you get rid of the original you destroy the copy.
And you can't really call downloading these as being a pirate due to the fact they are not actively sold by their original company, nor are many supported. The only thing they really care about is if you use the games name or other IP of theirs for personal gain (as in making money from their IP).
There is nothing pirated about 20 year old games esp when 20 years ago companies claimed piracy when they themselves pirated their games to gain millions of dollars as a "bootleg loss". Also, NONE of the people involved in these games get $ anymore. Furthermore, more times than not someone will d/l a game and if it isn't [!] or is, they will track down the game to buy it.
Ace we had good info back and forth, but I initially said these md clones sound like crap (compared to model 1 md) and even mentioned modding. No doubt by modding you could make things sound better. But I then said out the box they are crap. Yes you should solder up ones you CAN, then sell them on ebay. Probably won't compare to a model 1 md, but will be better than the underpower off pitched treble crap coming out of them.
Glad your working on a Neptune, so am I.
Easy you hook a device up to your PC, you plug said game cartridges into said device then you dump it into a rom file, put rom file on SD card, put SD card into flash device of choice and play. Plenty of devices just for this.
Oh so wolf 32x isn't homebrew, chilly will love that. I mainly bought a flash cart for chilly's homebrew. But there's much more then that. A lot of stuff can only be done with a flash cart or by emulation.
That's a bunk argument. I have several hundred real carts and have not stopped buying games. Flash carts are for convenience as Ace mentioned. Otherwise why would I buy a flash cart and then still buy Ninja Gaiden Trilogy. Damned games is 2/3rds the price of a flash cart.
Ironically most of the people I know who own flash carts are collectors who want to play on the original hardware but have their collections meticulously displayed and don't want to dig out the real games. This makes sense though since if they simply just didn't want to spend money on real copies of games they probably don't care about playing on the original hardware either and would just emulate.
However, do they probably also have games on that cart they don't own? Probably but who cares? I usually just see them being used as a convenience.
This isn't as applicable to the Genesis, but for the SNES a flash cart is a great way to play hacks and translations on the real hardware. This was my main reason for buying one.
