Any fans of VHS?

Yes! Personally I like to collect the VHS versions of movies I used to rent when I was a kid. This started with the Ewok
movies, as they were released as rentals only where I live. Once I got them, I really appreciated the old cover art and
started buying more of them. Had a lot of luck with some of them. I've got these rentals (lots are big box):

Right now, I'm converting the original VHS cover into DVD format :)

I love VHS cover art as well since it was usually just the theatrical posters, especially with older VHS releases. Posters were always a lot more interesting and artistic back then (and occasionally kind of lied about the contents of the movie). One VHS set I will never part with is my pre-fucked-around-with Star Wars trilogy with the original, beautiful poster art.

I remember when I was a kid the art alone is what dictated what I would rent most of the time.

Outside of nostalgia for VHS cover art however, the format is awful and was always awful.

I used to collect both VHS tapes and DVDs but I don't bother with physical copies of video anymore unless I reaaaally like the movie or show.

I also used to collect for VHS, but then I realized that those really, really degrade over time and will eventually become obsolete (in that they will lose their magnetism). I ended up giving all but 4 of my VHS tapes to Goodwill. If I want to watch something in VHS-esque quality, I'll nab the Laserdisc release if there is one. Most pre-DVD releases of movies I like were released on Laserdisc, so I'm good :P

It's especially bad if you live in a high humidity area. My girlfriend lived near the gulf in Texas and the VHS tapes she had as kid are all totally screwed.

Disagree. It is always about the mastering. I heard plenty of LPs with crappy mastering while its CD counterpart is more warmer sounding than the LP.

Well, I was going to say that a childhood favorite of mine was still only available on VHS, but apparently it was finally released on DVD earlier this year. It looks like I've another purchase to make - Arcade.

Me too. Mainly because the Indian guy got more screen time and he was hilarious and he kicked ass. Much better than Steve Guttenberg.

I'm with you guys, Short Circuit 1 is basically Police Academy with a robot. I much prefer Short Circuit 2, for Fisher Stevens but Michael McKean as well.

I dont remember who the villain was in part 1 but Oscar from part 2 was a awesome villain. When Johnny 5 gets revenge and chases him that whole scene is epic especially with the music playing.

I remember the older VHS tapes were heavy as bricks and lasted forever, but there at the end things got really cheap. I remember being able to watch a movie once, and it turning to crap.

I love movies, but VHS as a format was just not good. It was good enough for its age, but I do not miss it.

DVD and BRD are infinitely superior to it in every way other than durability. (easier to scratch or break a disk than kill a VHS)... but a VHS player could also decide to chew your tape into bits and potentially render it unplayable.

Streaming movies alleviate a bunch of that but I do appreciate the physical ownership aspect as well. The box/case art can also be quite awesome, not to mention some of the physical extras that are occasionally packaged in.

I think the DVD/BRD disk format > VHS in every single aspect. The only thing I would want a VHS player is for some things that just never saw release past VHS.

Yeah, I've held onto all 3 versions of the Star Wars Trilogy on VHS. The first issue is pretty much the way the movie was in the theaters. The only other version I have on DVD, that is the original theatrical release is A New Hope.

I also have Queensrych's Operation Mindcrime: The videos on VHS. I've never checked to see if it's available on DVD, but I've never seen it in the wild. When we moved into our house in 2004, the first video I popped in was this, after I had put together our entertainment center and set up the speakers.

I opened it up to see what was wrong. The motor had issues, so I tossed the VCR in the trash, with just a slight tear in my left eye.

in fact i think i have a vhs of 2 lying around ( not sure about that )
