More reasons to hate Gamestop

So my brother went to trade in some games of his this weekend and came home quite mad. Apparently Gamestop now charges you a refurbishment fee to trade in a game based on the price they sell that game for. Because of how it's calculated the fees are quite ridiculous.

Of the games my brother traded in, these were the amount he got back and the fees:

Madden 2012 - $20 back - $4 fee = $16 net gain
NBA2K13 - $17 back - $5 fee = $12 net gain
Star Wars Force Unleashed (Wii) = $2.50 back - $3 fee = $.50 net loss
Mass Effect (360) = $15 back - $3 fee = $12 net gain.

So where he should have gotten around $50 back, he only got $40 back after all the fees, which is pretty stupid. This refurbishment fee is pretty much a restocking fee since we all know they don't really do any kind of refurbishment beyond throwing the disc through one of those DIY disc repair kits.

While I don't trade in any of my games to stores like Gamestop, I figured I'd give anyone here who does a heads up.

That is why i only deal with craigslist I don't have to deal with any of that BS.

Yeah I pretty much stopped dealing with Gamestop years ago. The only things I buy from there are games when they decide to liquidate a platform and have sales or if it's something I can't find anywhere else. I got my PSP 3000 from them because they dropped the price on the system to $60 and the games were less than $5 a piece.

I went to GameStop this weekend as well. Didn't buy anything or trade anything in. Just wasting time, looking around. Checking out the Wii U games, and the Retro Wii U Pro Controller.

I've seen them online, but not in person. I was actually amazed to see it in GameStop.

It's an interesting piece of hardware for sure.

Anyways... So one employee came up to me and handed me a list of upcoming PS3 & Xbox 360 games. And told me "The Wii U will be getting a list after E3. Which is happening in about 3 months"

HAHAHAHA! Well DUMB ASS E3 is (at that point in time) 9 days away... I kinda wish i had said that, but I'd rather him just stay dumb.


Edit: I think that Retro Controller would of been cooler if the SNES Controller could pop out and be playable for Virtual Console games. Rather than permanently attached. But after seeing it in person. It would be a REALLY small SNES controller. And not very useable anyways. But a full size SNES Controller for Wii U would be nice!

It actually has a sensor on the front that can be used as a Wii Remote, which is an interested idea for sure. I wonder if the analog sticks become the nunchuk when that happens. That would be great for handicapped people. I have a friend who has a deformed right hand, and LOVES Nintendo, but was really pissed when Wii came out, as he couldn't play it at all. But that would fix that problem for sure for him.

The only GS trade in's worth anything are when they run promotions towards a certain amount off. Like trade in 4/5 games to get a good chunk off of a new game/system. They bank on people trading in games they can resell to make a lot off it, but if you have a bunch of old and cheap games you can come out way ahead on the deal.

No offense to your brother, but anyone who sells games to GameStop deserves whatever happens to them.

You people DO realize it's a business right? What do you expect from a large corporation that staffs thousands of employees and owns hundreds of stores where electricity has to be paid? Plus the profit of margin on a brand new game is a mere $5.

So please, quit complaining about getting "ripped-off" by Gamestop. It's a business, a hustle. If you buy a game a flea market for $1 and sell it back on here for $20, a 2000% markup, you essentially "ripped-off" whoever sold game to you for so cheap.

And if you're complaining about Gamestop's trade-in prices, why don't you go sell the game yourself on Amazon? Seriously, takes one click and you'll make a whole lot more money than what Gamestop will pay you in trade-in value.

The trade in prices aren't the problem. The problem is the ludicrous restocking fee. For Star Wars they actually wanted him to pay them to take it back as the restocking fee was more than they were willing to pay for the game.
