Gamestop will go the way of Blockbuster soon enough.
Yeah you have to be pretty stupid to pay someone to take a game off of you. If you don't like what you're getting there, sell somewhere else. I've not heard of this refurbishment fee, but I'm pretty sure it's new. Most of the time when someone would walk in with a really scratched up game they'd just reject it all together. I have been finding some cases in the trash for relatively new titles with no game inside, so I figure they do actually send them off.
Reselling games to GS never made any sense to me - For the prices they would offer to buy games back, I might as well keep them. However, I have no problem buying used from them, especially when they have 2 for 1 deals, which happens often enough.
I haven't traded in a game at gamestop in quite a while. When the hell did they start doing this crap.
I'm glad that I hardly trade in or sell my games, I've only done it a few times when I needed the extra used for a trade in for a game or system I wanted.
Now that I know this I will sell to mom n pop stores or try to sell on Craigslist to get the extra money I need.
I will still buy things from them, cause they do still carry more then what other stores around me do, I buy used games from mom n pop stores. I hit up stores that carry more then last generation games/systems such as video outlet or city echoes in my local area.
I'm not saying GameStop is always wonderful or anything but my worst headaches come from dealing with independent stores that give even less of a shit when it comes to customer service and price everything like it's made of solid platinum.
When I have had problems with GameStop they've generally gone out of their way to fix the problem so I can't really complain about them. Maybe I'm just lucky the staff of my local stores are pretty competent.
It's just a retail store like any other retail store to me. I have neither love nor hate for it. It simply is.
Yeah independent stores, when I can find them, usually price their stuff significantly higher than GameStop for the same titles. Sometimes it's like they don't even bother to stay on top of their pricing, you'll find really outdated pricing on old releases. At least my local record store stays on top of that, they make sure to keep everything they get slightly discounted from GameStop and offer slightly more trade in. Yet they still get next to no trade ins.
I don't recall the last time I set foot in a Gamestop. I can't feel bad for him to be honest. Had I been in his shoes I would have told them to take their fee and shove it.
I guess it could depend on area as well, cause all of my local independent stores usually sell their games for far less then what gamestop asks. Now if its a semi new game the price is around on par of what gamestop asks, but if its a older title then they ask far less. But that usually comes at a price, the less the ask for a title usually you will get less if you try to trade it in or sell it, but most of the times it's on par with what you would get from gamestop, sometimes a little more.
Latest thing today: They had Injustice: Gods Among Us for sale for $9.99 for one hour only. Naturally, it crashed the back end of the site, and when it started working again it was no longer available. GG, Gamestop.
It's justice that the game companies GS has been pandering to are trying to put them out of business
That is one more reason to hate Gamestop. It's a way to mislead people about their purchase pricing, which is already incredibly low.
I agree that Gamestop is a business, but as a business with terrible practices, I ensure that I never do business with them. A business transaction has to have some amount of fairness, or be beneficial to both parties. Just because people are willing to be robbed blind doesn't mean a business practice is acceptable. It just means there are too many stupid people in the world.
I never sell to these guys, and only buy things out of the bargain bin (like sub-$10 games). The prices they charge for used games are not much less than new, and oftentimes I can find new games for less than their used prices.
Some day gaming will go all digital, for better or for worse, and Gamestop will likely be unable to adapt their business and go the way of Blockbuster, as someone mentioned before. I will not be sad to se them go.
Before GS bought the competition, I liked buying PSX and DC games after the PS2 2003 ish from Funcoland, EB Games and GS. Most were $2-7 and complete. Some were really nice. I distinctly remember browsing the shelves full of games and handing the unfortunate salesperson print-outs from their website of games I wanted and having him go in the back and find them.
I also bought my Dreamcast from EB in 2003 (I think). It was $20 and came with 2 controllers and a VMU. I still have it!
Apart from the odd (cheap) PS2 game, I don't like GS.
