this sold over 1,200 prototype units in under 3 hours. They're currently completely sold out of their stock up to $400. the only units remaining are the ones in special, extra-pricey deals, to get limited edition units.
If they can keep the cost of the VR hardware below $600 there ought to be a good market for it. The problem will arise from most people moving toward tablets rather than desktop PCs, so the device will need to not require much processing power from whatever it hooks up to. Are they considering game console connectivity as well?
Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo all turned them down. They went to each console manufacturer and offered them their product first and got declined. Lmao was morons.
Valve looks like they're going to embrace Oculus rift with the steambox. There has been a considerable amount of collaboration between the two companies, with lots of employees going back and forth between the two companies. Additionally, valve has pledged that all their games will natively support occulus, and they're the only developer/publisher with multiple games with VR support (portal 2, team fortress 2, half life 2, and left for dead is being worked on currently). They're essentially the premiere VR developer at this point.
it doesn't sound inconceivable that the valve's build of the steambox might come bundled with an Oculus Rift.
But those are small numbers still, that come from a niche market of people who are extremely interested in it. How much mass market appeal is the thing going to have?
There's a reason the console makers turned them down and it's not because they're morons. VR at this level has a long history of not having widespread appeal. It's probably not something the average consumer is going to want to put in their house, at least not yet.
Maybe if they manage to prove otherwise things will change but I can't blame the big three consoles for turning them down. It's not not a proven safe investment for them.
It's something that's more up Valve's alley anyway and they're probably the perfect choice for trying to get it off the ground. We'll see if they can do anything with it.
Epic just announced native oculus rift support included in unreal engine 4. Like 5 minutes ago. That's huge!
The reason virtual reality never caught on isn't because of lack of consumer interest, it's because bom cost had already been unrealistically expensive. The rise of smart phones had provided built in infrastructure to.manufacturer this stuff. On my phone so I'll go into detail later, but John Carmack, Palmer lucky, and gave newell gave a lecture recently on why virtual reality is viable new, and why it failed in the 90's. It's never been lack of consumer interest, it's always been bom costs.
And I disagree that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo aren't run by morons.
Doom 4 was just announced. Built primarily for virtual reality, the first major game built specifically for virtual reality.
That ought to pretty much seal Virtual Reality as a viable ongoing development effort. Doom 4 is still going to use the Tech 5 (Rage) engine right?
Does it still fuck up your eyes?
I was talking about VR fucking up your eyes, or was it causing seizures? It was something like that.
I don't know that sounds kind of urban legend-ish.
The only problem I know of with early VR visors was a lot of reports of motion sickness which is something Carmack has said they've corrected.
There was witch hunt quality speculation that you could go insane or have a seizure from VR back in the 90s. Nothing was ever scientifically tested though. I think the most prominent fear was that people would lose their minds when they "died" in game because they were too engaged in the game to know the difference. Stupid stuff like that.
I remember there were lots of kid's sci-fi novels written about that kind of thing happening in the 90's. Hilarious stuff.
Talking about novels involving VR and stuff from the late 90s, I Highly recommend the "Otherland" series from Tad Williams. It is 4 books and is extremely good. If you are into reading sci-fi and VR interests you, get this. Its not cheesy sci-fi nor kids stuff. I rate it 9/10
