There was a similar 10/10 hysteria for Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite, and in retrospect neither game was groundbreaking despite weaving a good story. What's disturbing is that when BI came out the reviewers glossed over the mundane gameplay parts and sold us on the story alone.

To be sure, universal acclaim from the gaming press does not always equate to a good game. I've never understood the attraction to GTA games. GTA IV gets a ridiculously high average score on Metacritic, yet I found the game to be dull and uninteresting. I realize part of this is personal preference, but it does illustrate that you can't rely on universal love as a guarantee you will like a game.
That being said, from the reviews I've read now, the gameplay, style, quality and feel of the game seem like something I would like.
There's definitely this new trend of "This game does not have an abysmal story therefore it is perfect".
You can believe advertisements if you want to, but I'm pretty skeptical of perfection. Thanks for the links, though. I think it gives a better overall picture. And yes I believe reviews can and will be bought as long as there are things being reviewed. (Car and Driver anyone?) It's not a conspiracy. It's just the way the world works, like out of context quotes on DVD boxes or books. You can't take anything at face value.Quote:

Also, about the "This game does not have an abysmal story therefore it is perfect" comment, read the Destructoid review. Have you played it yet Kamahl? The Destructoid review is critical of gameplay elements. Do I have to copy and paste the whole review to make someone read it before they automatically dismiss it as "Just like IGN, 10/10 no review, paid off."?

When did games become about stories and character development? There is already a media for this and they're called movies. It's amazing how video games have become more like movies with plots and stories etc and movies have become more like video games. I am aware my last three posts have been rants about how modern gaming sucks, but I guess I remember when a video game story was a couple of pages in a manual that reading was optional and didn't alter the quality of the game. The reason I never replayed Sonic Adventure was it kept forcing story and cut scenes down my throat, that and Big the sodding Cat.
