Super Smash Bros. -- is it a legit fighter?

In regards to the Smash Bros. series, is it considered a legit fighter? It obviously lacks the sophistication of most true fighters like VF or Tekken, but is it really just a lamer's fighting game or do you consider it to be of substance? I've read that it was played in several major fighter tournaments, but it seems to be more of a fighter for casual players.

I also noticed that Melee had a special mode dedicated to Style, so that those with the most creative technique would get the points and not just those who use mindless bashing. However, this was removed in Brawl.

Hmm, most "fighters" I've played is usually consisting of 1-on-1 fights or in teams of 2.
But I don't think I've ever played a fighter which allows for up to 4 individual players and allows the use of various weapons and items as well as level specific hazards.

Most people I've talked to about smash bros tends to call the genre a 'brawler'.
And to me that title seems more fitting at least.

It probably has more in common genre wise with beat'em'up games compared to classic style fighting games.

Considering the insane competitive scene of Melee... Despite what old fighting game nerds say, Smash Bros. is a legit fighting series. Brawl on its own however, not so much.

You can take any fighting type game seriously (or any game at all for that matter). I do think smash bros is a "brawl" game and not a fighting game. I think it's silly comparing smash bros to fighting games it's a different sort of game.

it's more of a multiplayer party game than a real fighting game.

It's not a fighter if you ask me. I think Party Brawler fits it better.

And I really get disgusted with the Tourneyfag scene for Smash Bros. Pretty much most of them whine and complain about whatever ruleset you use until you modify it enough to create a situation where they can win. Sorry you don't go to a Street Fighter Tournament and beg the people running it to ban Sagat just because YOU can't beat him.

And the whole BS with Brawl vs Melee annoys me too. I have no issues playing Brawl or Melee. They are different games, plain and simple. If you like Melee more, go play Melee then. If you like Brawl more go play Brawl. It's as simple as that. The fact that Melee fans modified Brawl to turn it into Melee 2.0 really annoyed me when I heard about it. It's basically saying "We can't win at Brawl due to the changes so we are going to cheat and change the conditions of the game to help us win!" It would be like Street Fighter fans modifying every new game to play exactly like Street Fighter II The World Warrior. Sorry, but when a new iteration in a competitive game comes out you learn to adapt to the changes. You don't go changing the game so you don't have to learn anything.

Sorry for the rant on that, I just got so annoyed with that fanbase when I had to run Smash Bros. Tournaments for my Club in college.

As most of the N64 offerings in sports, racing and fighting genres it's hard to take it any serious IMO. It's all about a blurry shitfest of nonsense with four controllers plugged in and a lot of "whooooooa!", "yahhhhoooooooo!" and other stupid baby-ish screams and moans.
Not my thing, really.

There were better 2D and 3D beat-em up "party" and arena fighters before Super Smash Bros. anyway, they just didn't have the benefit of having Nintendo's icon-like characters in them.

I'd love to see one of these Melee tournaments, I'd really like to see how these people can get that compettive over it. I found it to be somewhat of a good game, but it was also shallow as hell.

The solution is simple. If someone whines, tell him / her to f#ck off and start his / her own tournament where they get to make their own stupid rules.

Usually if I want a laughable sh#t-fest play my rival schools pcb. The game is just one on one but you can do team attacks against the opponent.

Why not? People tourny with any competition games that you can actually find flaws in and abuse. I used to watch guys have daily street fighter 3 third strike money matches at a local arcade. I also watched a soul calibur 3 tournament, I didn't know you could get that good at soul calibur. Maybe it was soul calibur 4, I forget which number it was honestly.

You can't refer to them as brawlers, that's already taken (as an alternative name for beat 'em ups) and causes confusion. I've always refered to them as melee fighters ever since the first one was released. Let us not forget to mention the best one of them all - Power Stone 2. And we don't want to leave out Treasure's wonderful entry into the genre - Rakugaki Showtime.

Party fighter then.

I never considered it a legit fighter.

Power Stone 2 is the only reason I own a Dreamcast. I can't get enough of slapping people with fish, then running them over with motor scooters.
