Smash Bros. is a legitimate fighter just as Mario Kart is a legitimate racer. They may not have the depth of some of the more serious games in their genres but they're still well designed. And Smash Bros. happens to be a pretty cool Nintendo museum of sorts as well.
I wouldn't really call Smash Bros. a brawler as that's a term used more for beat 'em ups like Double Dragon.

I dunno. Do you, like, fight in it?
I don't know how sub-compartmentalized we can get (or indeed should get) here. "I consider it a multiplayer-party-beat'em-up with a twist of lemon."
It's a fighting game. It's fun. What's a "legit" fighter- a game where a dude shoots fireballs out of his hands? It's a game based on or built around or whatever you want to call it- fighting. I don't get too hung up on the labels.
Of course "shumps*" are still "shooters" to me, so what do I know?
*ugh- hate that term
