Why did you just say Edge twice?

That's not sony's problem, they can't prevent that.
They designed a console specifically for the purpose. They just backed out at the last minute. That's like saying steam doesn't block used games because developers can opt out of the DRM... come on now... And you HAVE to go through an accepted retailer (like gamestop) you *cannot* sell any xbox one game on ebay.
^ wait
microsoft backpedalled ?
hmm
kind of a half assed back pedal then
they are trying to do damage control but the damage has been well and truely done
Meh, 24 hour online checks are still a dealbreaker. Need to do better, M$. Much fucking better.
Personally it doesn't bug me. My 360/ps3 have only ever been without internet when I've been without power. For lots of others it won't be an issue wither.
But I still agree it's a crappy restriction since it's purposefully omitting large chunks of people from using the system. It's not really a big deal if a particular game has such a requirement (or needs a 100% always there connection) because you can simply not buy that one game.
Sony is certainly setting themselves up to be the better option so far. Least so long as they don't make a series of boneheaded moves like the PS3. But Sony screwed the PS3 launch and months after REALLY bad, and they still managed to recover and make a respectable showing last gen. Will see if MS can do the same. I'd MUCH prefer them both keeping each other on their toes.
Look at how good PSN had to get to respond to live, and look how live is now changing because of it. Both companies need the other to keep things interesting... since Nintendo appears to not be bothered and is content to do their own crap off in the corner again.
not only is it a crappy restriction
you are effectivley renting your games
the games you pay 60 bucks a pop for and ina few years when microsoft pulls the plug on the authetification servers you whole library has become worthless
and microsoft's reaction is pretty much: "lulz fuck u"
and i will pass for that
( and yes i am aware that i only rent the ps plus games on my ps3 but i am aware of that and more importantly i didnt pay 60 bucks a piece for them )
That's assuming they don't make a local authentication tool or simply a patch to remove it entirely. I don't really expect MS to flip the middle finger at the collective audience of gamers when the XBone has reached end of life.
Not to say they won't, but I don't expect it. I don't have such a poor view of their overall strategies. Are some of the things they are doing crappy? You betcha!
But there's a difference between them trying to push something that a lot of people won't care or even understand vs rendering not only would every game on the XBone be useless, but the console itself would be almost entirely a brick. That's not something people would just "not notice". They would have no choice but to notice. And unless MS's entire business went down in flames overnight, they would not want that kind of publicity. This current issue is one that may or may not have some business sense behind it, but deliberately invalidating the entire purchase of a console and all related games past a certain point? Not really an effective move, and the simple code changes, so long as they were planned for, would literally cost them nothing.
I can see them just pushing down a few bits of code to remove the restriction and shut down the servers. At that point the only games that won't work are games that are online only, or ones that use some sort of a 3rd party check (and that would be up to the 3rd party to keep the servers up or patch).
well with ms's current boneheaded attitude i wouldnt be a bit surprised if they would do that
or maybe equally likely they would say well you can have your old xbox one games on the new xbox 4 but for a transfer fee
i can see that happening
Kind of like the PS4's ability to potentially play PS3 games via their cloud service? Yeah, I can see MS going the same/similar route. People pay premiums for really dumb things.
If they were shutting down everything, I'd imagine even some of those services would go away. If they are keeping it up to date enough to do all that, there isn't really an issue keeping a lowly authentication server running.
The point still stands that lots of people would have entire libraries of games, physical and digital, that would just cease to work if the only thing they did was flip the service switch to off... unless that happened a great deal of time later... people would notice.
But simply at the start, or soon after, the next gen hits? not at all. And unless X86/64 gets majorly replaced by something else better/cheaper by then, I'd expect the next Sony and MS consoles to continue to be based on the same architecture, so it is pretty likely that all the games on the Xbone and PS4 will have a high chance of working natively on the XBtwo and PS5 systems.
Not a priority for them this time. And it was using a different GPU architecture. Things being based around x86 and more generic graphic libraries will make it quite a bit easier going forward. Provided they don't go some custom chipset route again.
I also wouldn't be shocked to see oXbox games on the Xbone before long, they should be pretty damn easy to get working for them on it now.
