Those MS sales are far from bad. I don't see why you would say they would not try again based on that. Sony is the clear winner for now and it's all on them to maintain that lead. MS will have to really pull it off to catch up, let alone overtake, Sony... but that lead, in the long run, is nothing. It's still pretty close as it's early on. Even Nintendo is doing better now due to MK sales boosts. So all three of them could pull of great sales this gen if they keep on it and keep delivering on what people want.

Unless the MS management just doesn't want to deal with Consoles anymore, or their console sales come to a damn near standstill, I see no reason why there wouldn't be another Xbox (or whatever name they want) console after the xbone.

Those are most likely shipped numbers, not sold. If Sony had sold 9 Million PS4's they would have probably told us by now. The last update we have from them was around 7 million. When you add up the Media Create data and the NPD data it's no where near 9 million. At the start of April Sony was at 7 million. When you do the math for April and May you have about 550k Sold for the US and Japan combined. So if we take a guess at what June has been and add another 300k, which is generous, to that number we're at 800k. So unless Europe and the rest of the world have sold 1.2 million PS4's in that amount of time I don't see it hitting 9 Million sold. Maybe 8 Million, but 9 Million would be rather unlikely.

And while we're on it the PS4 is still pretty much dead in Japan, here's last week's Media Create Numbers:

I think we're eventually heading towards Microsoft losing interest, or maybe even Sony, or maybe even a standardization of the market (which both Microsoft and Sony ultimately want control of and are clawing at each other to get). It really depends on how this generation plays out. It's hard to say what the market is going to look like in 6-7 years. Other innovations may occur in that time that change the way we look at home consoles.

Japan is still relevant as a source of content, but in terms of actual sales numbers, they are an afterthought now at best.

Sony, and especially MS, could simply ignore Japan and never release their systems there and it would barely move any of their sales numbers.

The PS4 isn't dead there, but not much of any home console hardware is really moving off the shelves.

This years E3 was far from overwhelming, but it showed off a few of the games on all 3 systems that people will be picking up this coming year. Slow start, Nintendo had a year of time to get some of the bigger titles underway, so I don't think we're going to see a huge amount out of the MS/Sony systems for at least another year. Updated releases of a few old games, new installments of existing franchises, and still a lot that's pulling simultaneous last gen/current gen releases.

There's stuff to play, but the stuff that isn't still just a redone ps360 game seems like it's going to be more around the holiday season, if not next year and beyond.

I think for the ps4/xbone and wii u, there's maybe 5 games across all of them (most being cross plat ps4/xbone/pc) games that I'm pretty sure I want. And a handful of "maybes"

MS has been entrenched in the mobile phone market for far longer, with far more/stronger opposition and with less chance of success and they are still deep in it.

They have a real reason for wanting to be in the living room, and the xbox platform has certainly delivered pretty well despite some rocky moments. That can obviously change, but I see little incentive for them to get out of it. It's not like Sony has buried them, nor is it like they are the last runner in a huge line of contenders. There's only 3 players in the field right now with any real credibility, and one of them (Nintendo) seems to just wander off and do their own thing now and again, allowing MS and Sony to virtually control the playing field as they see fit.

Most of the games are multiplat with MS's system supported... all MS has to do is worry about grabbing the audience and providing some support.

I don't know if they've done it yet with any phone, but if they had a phone about the power of the ps4/ps3 - cheap games like on the apple store, I can see buying a console a bit old fashioned

ps everytime I type power it highlights some advert is it just me or sega 16 advertisers

You might wanna do a system scan with Mallwarebytes, Sega-16 itself seems clean when I check what scripts are here with NoScript.
So the problem might be on your side.

Phones and digital cameras used to come with TV hookups for picture slideshows. I guess that was just too good of an idea to continue with.

I don't think huge 'mericans are ever going to get rid of their TVs even if they all move from desktop computers and consoles to something smaller. The trend with TVs seems to be 3D and super HD nobody would be smart enough to use the right cables for. The trend with game developers is nothing but sequels with no gameplay innovation allowed and I don't see that changing. The trend with movies is toward creating blockbusters not good stories and I don't see that changing. The trend since the mid 90s for the game industry as a whole is to be just like hollywood, and I haven't seen anything that could change that trend.

Short of a trend of holographic real life sized projectors, so I can fight damn dirty ninja myself, I doubt any of these creators of stagnation will interest me in the future.

Console gaming as a whole is pretty much an afterthought in Japan. The days of dominate JRPGs are over. Look at this years E3. Capcom, konami and Square had slim pickings. Japan alone should never be used as the standard example of game sales.

And yes, 9 mil PS4s seems about right. The PS4 has been in the amazon top 10 best selling consoles since launch. Xbone and WiiU continue to flounder.

^i wouldnt say that xbox one is floundering
5 million or so consoles sold in limited markets with hal attached to it for 499 isnt too bad

now that hal ha sbene discarded the console got a price cut and it wil be released in more countries sales for it may pick up

the wii U on the other hand does flounder after being on the market for 18 months its only on par with the xbox one

mario kart 8 gave it a shot in the arm though
the question is will nintendo capitalise on this or just let it flat line again ?

And I absolutely agree. The pricing is beyond insane. If Sony has any good business sense, then they had better start thinking of some substantial reductions in pricing. And according to polygon.com Sony will drop the pricing to some degree.
