Sadly, Valve, outside of becoming or stating up a porting company can do little else to encourage adoption or effort.
They developed an MIT licensed GL Wrapper for devs(which they have used to port their own games)
They created a targeted runtime that developers could choose to utilize.
They've held one conference and had several speakers speak on Linux Porting, debuggers, other tools, tips ect...
They've joined the various efforts to fix API's and donate to organizations.
It's up to 2 groups now. The Users and the Businesses.
And even then, while they can push these companies, we'd still be missing the likes of EA, Ubisoft, Activision. However much people dislike them, they still produce wanted games.
There has been a good effort put in, it is just not enought
2K(Civ V, Xcom, Beyond earth, Borderlands Pre Sequel)
Deep Silver(Metro, most likely homefront)
Frictional Games(Amnesia)
Kalypso(Tropico 5, Dungeons 2)
Nordic games(Painkiller, Darksiders 1 AND 2 coming)
Paradox(Crusader Kings at least, with more coming)
Sega(FM, and Rome 2 eventually)
GOG(Some CDPR, wine wrappers mostly for older games)
An assortment of Indie devs
Almost every kickstarted/crowdfunded game(Wasteland 2, Star Citizen, Pillars of Eternity, Project CARS, Citizens of Earth ect..)
For right now, it seems only the traditionally stronger kept PC companies(or at least companies possessing at least one strong PC IP) are the ones doing any work.
Unfortunately the needle won't really move unless other pubs join in as said earlier, and for that to happen, people actually need to buy the games. Most of the pubs in question seem to be happy or at least neutrally content with their porting efforts, but that is not good enough.
Well if you want to play the Console Exclusive card then the Wii U's list of exclusives goes up by quite a large amount when you consider all the Indie titles that are only on PC and the Nintendo eShop. If we play that card we can start throwing in games like Shovel Knight, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, etc.
Wait, Lego City Undercover is Wii U only?!?!
SHIT. BEST BUY A WII U.
It's actually a fun and entertaining game. It's kind of like GTA meets Legos but from a cops perspective. So instead of being the criminal your catching the criminals. Obviously since it's a Lego game it doesn't have the adult content of a GTA game, but the core sandbox style gameplay is there.
I was actually considering getting it if I ever got a Wii U. I liked legos as a kid, and I love GTA and open world games right now so maybe I dunno. I still can't justify a 300$ price tag at this moment in time.
Everything I'm seeing right now that I'm really interested in is getting a PC release. The Wii U though, those exclusives aren't coming to the PC anytime soon so I might get one.
MGS V, The Crew, GTA V are coming to the PC. There's a new Halo game coming to PC, Killzone is forgettable, I really don't see a reason to get a PS4 right now, especially since I can play those remastered games on the PS3 for cheaper (albeit not remastered).
And another thing you guys are forgetting to mention is that both the PS4 and Xbone have so many more future exclusives and non-exclusives that the WiiU does. At the end of the day at a business perspective the WiiU is at a severe loss, worse off than the Dreamcast was back in 2001. The only difference is that Nintendo has so much more money to burn. Sega was at a financial disadvantage. Smash Brothers will do well, but it wont do enough to propel Nintendo back to the top. It will be a temporary surge just like with Mario Cart.
Again, some of you guys are avoiding these irrefutable facts by deceptively deflecting the narrative. And the way you are doing this is by mentioning exclusive WiiU games that most gamers either don't care, don't want or don't know about. Most of these WiiU exclusives are mediocre and are not in high demand. As for the PS4 I will admit the failure of Knack. Knack is mostly garbage. But the rest are respectable exclusives and so many more are on the way. The WiiU cannot claim that.
IMHO currently The Wonderful 101, DK and the upcoming Bayonetta 2 are the only WiiU games worth my time. It's a damn shame that Nintendo fanatics don't even care about Bayonetta. I said this before, at the Nintendo Life forums there is an abandoned thread covering Bayonetta. A game like Bayonetta is too advanced and mature for an average Nintendo fanboy to appreciate and embrace. The Nintendo faithful's holy grail is Smash Brothers. I cant quite put my finger on it but your average Nintendo faithful would rather stay in the comfort zone of child-like games.
Mostly everyone who enjoyed and embraced Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Killer Instinct back in the day have moved on to the PC, PlayStation and Xbox. The rest have a slobbering love affair with a fat plumbers, mushroom people, a green dinosaurs.
Pot meet kettle!
Nintendo fans are wrong for mentioning Wii U exclusives that gamers may or may not want but you are completely justified doing the same when it comes to MS and Sony? Explain to me how that works. You don't know how some of the future releases on the X1 and PS4 will be received.
This isn't really true. The sales may appear to reflect this, but there's another aspect that isn't taken into consideration in that scenario. Most people who own a Nintendo Console also own a PC, Playstation, or Xbox console. So when there is a multiplatform game coming out if the Nintendo version is gimped/rushed/late/inferior, which many times it is, they'll instead buy the better version for the other system they own. If a game is coming out for both Wii U and 360/PC and I see the Wii U version is once again missing key features, is coming out later, etc. what reason do I have to shell out $60 for the Wii U version when I can get the 360 or PC version for the same or less. That's the question third party developers need to answer if they want their games to sell on the Wii U.
I think Bayonetta 2 will do well if it's marketed well enough. There's still tons of people crying for a 360/PS3 port after all. Eventually they will need to accept reality that if they want to play the game they need to buy a Wii U.
What I'm saying is that the mainstream demand simply isn't there for WiiU games. The PS4 is #1 for the last 7 months straight because the games and hardware are in demand. That fact cannot be ignored.
Now don't tell me all 10 million PS4 sales are due to popularity only. Not a chance dude.
I think the PS4 is selling simply on hype and hype alone. Most people I know who have gotten one have had it collecting dust after they've played the few exclusives.
And I'm not sure if that 10 million number is actual sell through and not shipped numbers. NPD data shows maybe 2-3 Million sold for the US. And considering the system is on it's deathbed in Japan that would mean Europe + Australia + SEA is making up about 70-80% of the entire PS4 market, which I find hard to believe.
I disagree like sonic likes fixing pipes, the ps3 and 360 have been around for ages, I was 25 when the 360 came out and im now 34,
people want something new and different and so their buying the ps4 and finding its just better graphics, the games take took long now for developers to risk putting out something different aka pilot wings, Nights into Dreams, crazy taxi, super monkey ball, etc
so with the ps4 and xbox1, games developers will not take risks and that's the consumers vault, because if you stamp a game with a licence a lot of us brought it,
Just like all Sony consoles outside of the PS3. The PS3 lost its hype early on, but the rest where hype machines promising this and that.
Again, I'm not saying 'future exclusives' aren't going to look great, but we are in an industry of 'over hyping' games. All I'm saying its probably smart to NOT buy a Playstation 4 till the games you want come out. Is that too complicated for people to get?
Feels like there are some big PS4 supporters here and that's fine. I'll admit I wish the Wii U had more exclusives... I can just imagine how PS4 owners feel. I mean, they can't even named 5 boxed games exclusives.
The last console I bought on launch was the SEGA Dreamcast because:
1. Sonic Adventure
2. Soul Calibur
3. Power Stone
4. HOTD2
5. NFL 2K
6. Blue Stinger
Its been a year and there isn't 5 exclusives? Really? Why not just wait for the ACTUAL software and buy a PS4 at a cheaper price? I mean, they are bound to drop the price in 2016/17 when all those games everyone wants actually come out.
