Kind of like how the United States votes for presidents.
Yes. It looks like something out of a 1980's sci-fi movie or anime.

They both look kind of dull to me, one looks like a pc in a designer case and the other looks like a pc in a different designer case. Are curves out this year?
People forget history so quickly. Sony will only hold a pro-gamer stance as long as it suits them and not an instant longer. Remember backward compatibility? Remember the price of the PS2 in comparison to the Dreamcast at launch? Remember the price of the PS3? Remember Linux on PS3? Remember Lik-Sang? How long did it take them to get PSN working even remotely as well as Xbox Live?
Sure, they aren't going to go the DRM route, until they do.
Still can't give you rep, sooooooo....

Sony still isn't stating if publishers can go the always on, lock out used games route. They are just stating that they are not going to make that the default.
As you mentioned, they didn't do anything spectacular, and had all this always on/used game stuff NOT been hovering around MS, the only real killer portion of their announcement was the price point. (Which I think they learned a harsh lesson on with the ps3).
I also think they were waiting for MS to release their price point first specifically so they could determine if they could undercut it, and if so, by how much.
Really, MS gave Sony the ammo, all they had to do was not release anything that made them look bad. They can ride the positive hype all the way to launch if they are smart.
For MS. I have to say, they either need publishers/studios to back them up and shun Sony, or tell them they are going to remove the DRM portion as a default. If they are going to let PS4 be "the same, but more open" and have all the same games... then the MS is letting themselves get shafted.
If MS is really smart, they will release an announcement quickly to "listen" to their customers and squash some of Sony's thunder before it can settle in.
At the end of the day, the only fight they should have to contend with is the price point. The policies that are causing a problem are nothing more than easy to change software settings.
Point to Sony... now It's up to MS to either step up or screw up.
what the hell do any of those points have to do with sony's stance on drm?
there is no such thing as default. sony makes the hardware and the hardware won't allow lock out. very simple, just like regional locking with ps3 was. I know it must be hard and desperate time to keep on hating sony but really... grow up.
All MS have to do is release a COD ghosts themed Xbox one. They win. Stupid kids :D ............. Sony respond with a pair of tits on the PS4.
they removed backwards compatabiliy for ps3 because it was too expensive and they are still backwards compatible with ps1 because that wasn't expensive. the price of the ps3 was because of the blue ray player that was incredibly expensive. ps3 sold cheaper than the cheapest blue rayer player there was at the time, same with ps2 and dvd players
With that you would be wrong. Every modern console with broadband network support and built in storage has the ability to "support" both always on and locking out used games (all or in part). The entire "online pass" issue is essentially a partial used game lockout. They could even do regional lockout on a per game basis if they wanted, but I don't see that as being common.
Both Sony and MS have it in their power to define the default policy of the system (meaning that things need to adhere to that to be licensed for use on their console).
Ms is stating that it will be always online as a system requirement. And by default will not prevent the ability to trade/sell used games, but that game publishers/studios can certainly take extra measures to lock that down.
Sony is the opposite. Not always on by default requirement, and that by default there is nothing preventing you from taking a disk and selling, trading, or just bringing over to your friends house.
What they have not said is if they are going to prevent any publishers from using their hardware to enforce essentially the same scheme as MS has.
That lets them wash their hands of the entire issue and still allow it because they can just say "we don't require it" and let the publishers take all the flak. The only thing they need to do to be truthful is not have Sony published games do that.
MS should adopt the same policy unless the publishers are going to float them a TON of exclusives... and not exclusive DLC or limited duration crap. I mean fully exclusive, as in, PS4 will never get this, because anything less is just them telling MS, "Lol, thanks for caving to us, but screw you, we're going to just make everything for the PS4 as well since we want more money".
answer me honestly. do you own a ps3? how many games do you own and have played for it?
they did yesterday. they said no lock out for 2nd hand games. what point don't you get? nobody is so stupid as to turn that around in a year time. the consumer backlash would be worse than what m$ is getting now
No because i thought it was a step back compared to PS2 as far as games are concerned. And i didn't like its exclusive games anyway and i had the 360 which was better for multiplatform. But i played a lot of games anyway since a friend of mine has one. Didn't convince me to buy one though. But just because i don't have a PS3 it doesn't mean i shouldn't have an opinion. PS3 online gaming was free (like everyone else except Microsoft's) and people considered it as a plus for Sony fans, but not anymore. I'm not like one of those who say "it doesn't affect me, so i don't care". I care about the game industry as a whole and when i see backward steps i object.
And I suppose you think that Sony put DVD and Bluray in their game consoles out of the goodness of the heart. Were these formats the best of all choices for games that generation given the cost?
As for the expense affecting Sony's decision on PS2 backward compatibility, how long do you think they will remain altruistic regarding the "expense" of used game sales? How many exclusive cloud games do you think they will release with no physical media counterpart?
The point is, they didn't say. "Hey, look at what MS is doing. We won't let anyone do that".
They simply said things will work like they do now.
Which means some games you can just hand to a friend like their cute little video.
But it also says nothing about a company like EA making their online pass system the exact same for MS and Sony, thus making many AAA titles functionally identical for both systems.
IE:
Want the next MOH game and EA doesn't want you trading it in? Guess what, MS has told you up front that they can lock it to you forever.
Sony has simply not mentioned if their policies will explicitly disallow such things, or if they simply don't care and leave it entirely up to the publisher.
If you can show me where Sony has said anything about that, fine. But from what I saw/heard, they are just simply not saying anything about it... because I don't think they have anything to say about it.
Saying, "we allow used games... except when a publisher decides to not allow it" isn't as good of a soundbite as just saying you can play used games.
Just like they didn't say, "no online checks unless the game requires them".
Make no mistake, they have the superior standpoint on this. But I'm incredibly wary of the fact that MS's position is something the major studios have been actively after for years. I just do not see MS championing that cause at the expense of their userbase without some serious incentives behind it.
To me, that either means that Sony will be in the exact same situation, even if not the "default"... or MS has been promised a great deal of exclusive big name content to make them see it as worth it.
no but it renders everything you say pretty much useless. it's like I'm saying a ferrari rides like shit because I had driven it one time by a friend when it was snowing and the car broke down.
yes they were and they became the standard for all the right reasons. look how 360 struggled because it had limited data on their dvd's for instance. or gamecube with their minidiscs. even dreamcast.
How did the 360 struggle with DVDs? Is requiring more than one disk for a handful of games struggling? Rage was supposed to be the defining battle for whether or not this generation needed larger optical storage, how did that turn out again? I own it on PC and after install it really didn't matter how many DVDs it came on.Actually I think Steam downloaded the game after I put the first disk in, can't remember.
Lets just face facts, Sony and Microsoft both suck. Neither care about gamers, they are just huge companies that want huge sums of your money. I haven't bothered with any console since the ps1 (given to me with a boat load of games for free, about two years after the PS2 came out), and I wasn't impressed with that! If I want to play anything new I just use the PC, if I want to play a proper game I use the MD or SNES. My stepson has a PS3 & Xbox 360, the only one I use is the PS3 for bluray. You may fire when ready.....
Well PS+ does give you a ton of free "permanent" (while you're subscribed) games every month for all systems, plus steam like discounts... 5€ a month are worth it really, xbox live is now catching up to sony lol.
So, the ill-fated biggest evil billion-bleeding killer of Sega and hater of true gaming will deliver, once again, the best package of the generation?
I'm not the biggest fan of the Ps4 design.
Who said a parallelogram was a good shape for a console? >.<
Xbox One isn't much better either, they both look too similar with the whole separated into two materials in the middle look.
Might have to but a ps4 if they do push out Last Guardian though.
You gentlemen are quite excited about the Playsson 4 around here aren't you?
That reminds me of a football tournament where the other teams screws up so much, that they end up pratically giving the title to a team that sucked less during the competition.
That's basically it Bottino. If sony came out and said "PS1 and PS2 games will be available for purchase through a virtual store in addition to our gaikai service" I'd buy a PS4.
PS4 seems impressive but ill wait on it until it's out for a bit. The price is great but i am liking the games for WiiU on the horizon. I may get the WiiU first if they do a price cut then PS4 and ill pass on XBONE
Sega, Hudson, Atari, Commodore, SNK etc. all these companies were predestined to fail in this business, it was only a matter of time, since the video game industry became big business there is only place for large mega corporations like Microsoft and Sony, Sega as a small company have no place in this business, and Nintendo is already throwing it's last swipes before drowning.
Sega was never succesfull, they should never have entered the market of hardware manufacturing to begin with.
Yes , but that began to happen after Sony joined the party.
Before that there were only the companies that you mentioned above.
Sony did what it had to be done, there was a hole in the gaming industry that needed to be filled, "playstation" had to to happen any time, the gaming industry was already worn by the subpar hardware offerings by Sega and Nintendo, those 2 were always cutting corners with their limited budget consoles, Nintendo and Sega were like stones in the way of innovation, they were preventing people homes from enjoying technology on par with what was seen only in the arcades at the time.
We came to enjoy "the arcade at home" for the first time with the Playstation.
^ Hahahahah, we did that first with the TG16 and Megadrive I think, they had Arcade board versions too, or maybe even the Famicom.
Sony just confirmed, used DRM will be up to 3rd party publishers, just like MS.
http://kotaku.com/third-party-publis...game-512643240
Those were "arcade-iced" consoles, just the opposite, Nintendo PC-10, Megatech, the jamma PCE boards etc.
It's not the same, Sony is referring to what EA is already trying to do on the PS360, is different from what M$ is doing with Xone, where they have even prepared an online store for these purposes inside xbox live.
Sony is only saying "if you want to do so, do it at your own risk, but don't come back to me crying because nobody buys your sh!tty game.."
The PS1 gave us the "Arcade at home" no better than the Saturn did.
That is essentially exactly what I expected.
MS should have said the same. They were just more honest about it, even if they tried to make it "seem" like a good idea.
Sony can laugh it all the way to the bank now, because they have better sound bites and can shovel all the blame onto the publishers.
MS should take the initiative and "revamp" their stance to be the same... while pointing out that Sony is effectively in the same situation they are. It won't reverse all of their negative hype, but it would be at least a small amount of damage control.
