I would like a reccomendation of some of the best sci-fi themed RPG games, both classic and modern. While I like stuff like Phantasy Star and Shadowrun, they fit more into the science-fantasy genre. I'd assume a modern example would be KotOR, Fallout or Mass Effect. Likewise, I can't really name as many in the retro world.
Some of my favorites so far:
-Robotrek / Slapstick (SNES)
-The Metal Max/Metal Saga series (various platforms)
I also heard LaGrange Point is decent for an 8-bit RPG.
star control 2 for 3do no doubt!
Fallout 1 & 2, I'm still baffled how these were never ported to a Sega system.

I wouldn't count that one, it was a horrible game that bore no resemblance to the original fallout games.

Xenogears
Oh.. science-fantasy? I am not much into RPGs so I hope we get better suggestions.

I keep wondering why Blizzard doesn't make a Starcraft MMO. WoW seems to be dying out and they need to replace their cash cow with something. Starcraft seems a perfect fit with pre-built races and stories, as well as a good fanbase.
wow stil has a huge installed user base about 8 million
and thats not a number to sneeze at
and besides how do you top something like wow ?
blizzard is their own biggest enemy right now how do you equal let alone top something like wow ?

I know WoW is still raking in cash, but I read that their subscriptions have started to decline. The game has had a great run, but I think it is on the downhill side. I think rolling out a Starcraft MMORPG would be a great way of equalling or topping WoW, if done well.Quote:

Not sure if you count tactical RPGs but I love me some Front Mission. Especially FM3 and the action RPG Gun Hazard. I'll never forgive Squeenix for not localizing FM5.
Can't say I play enough RPGs to think of any others that haven't already been mentioned.
i love front mission 3 because i like mechs
but be glad you got 3 and 4 ( and 1 on the ds )
all europe ever got was 3
and all europe ever got from xenosaga was 2 ( brilliant move there namco lets release the middle section of a trilogy and lets NOT release episode 3 ...fuckers )
Front Mission 4 is a pretty weak installment though. 5 is incredible.
We also got that piece of absolute trash, Front Mission Evolved.
I do really like Front Mission on the DS. It's the best version of the game. My only problem with the first game is that long range weapons are super broken.
