It's google's code. It's google's ecosystem. It's integrated with many devices. It has developers. Other embedded solutions built on GNU/Linux are not as flexible, competitive or convenient as Android or suit it's purpose.
The best argument you should have made here was to say "Why Android? Why not ChromeOS?" and then it would still be a coin toss as to whether or not you would have been dunce capped and told to go sit in a corner over it.
GNU packages aren't exciting unless you're enthusiastic about low level bullshit that nobody gives a fuck about in the real world. There's a level of practicality and productivity that needs to be weighed when you pull yourself away from technology and look around at the usability and purpose of the devices in question. Android is the most successful and practical version of Linux there is for this market.
The Google Play Store being relevant in a TV Box setup is going to live or die by their own marketing push. They will need to flood youtube adsense with whatever Nexus Console they're putting together, and moneyhat content exclusives to deal with iTunes. Having your already purchased Android tablet & phone games be cross platform with your big screen will be a selling point.
Heh, I kind of called this when I first heard of the Ouya. I predicted Google would go and make their own.
Someone asked why, well why not? They have the technology and the infrastructure already. It's not a huge risk for them to repackage it in video game console form. If it fails they go back to their Nexus phones and tablets and if it succeeds they have another market to compete in.
Regardless there's not much information about this yet and it hasn't even been officially announced so I'm not going to speculate further.
So if the company that actually develops Android and controls its ecosystem comes out with an Android console it's stupid but if Sega does the same thing it will be a success. This goes beyond brand loyalty to literally delusional.Quote:
The only 4th console maker that could successfully pull off an Android or Tablet based console right now is SEGA. Nuff said.
