Yeah, a few Atari games should be on that list, that's true. And they shouldn't mix versions of Tetris all together, they are not all the same exact game. Otherwise, it's probably an accurate list.

Sales numbers in Europe were pretty small at that point compared to those in the US. A game that sold quite well there would not make this list if it didn't also sell well in the US.

... The game released in Japan in 1988, on October 23. That's why it says that, and that's why it's on the list. It took a while before it came overseas. They use the original Russian computer release as their date for Tetris, though I absolutely agree that mixing lots of versions together there is NOT right (list Game Boy Tetris alone!), but while in a "US/EU sales" list Mario 3 should not be there, if you're doing a so-called "worldwide" list it should. It released in Japan in 1988, after all.

Computer and arcade games are not console games. When talking about console games, only console games should count. When people talk about computer games and don't include console games, it's not an attempt to deny their existence.

I don't want to go to the energy on how much mistakes there are in the article that is probably written by some Nintendo fan like using the Super Mario Advance 4 screenshot for Super Mario Bros. 3. Thinking logically some of these figures would include pack ins (e.g. NES systems with SMB, Game Boys with Tetris or Game Boy Pockets with Super Mario Land 1 & 2), rereleases (e.g. the GBA releases of SMB, Virtual Console releases) and remakes (Super Mario Advance series). While Tetris is a really popular game, I think that 30 million sales business was after the 80s with the pack in of the Game Boy version since presumably Nintendo kept reprinting that game until the release of Tetris DX (I don't think the home computer versions, Atari Tetris, Sega Tetris, JP NES Tetris, Tengen NES Tetris, Nintendo NES Tetris [that would really be squeezing it since it came out late 89] equal to 30 million).

As for Super Mario Bros and Duck Hunt as well as re-releases and pack ins, they were also on multicarts that skrew the figures up so I imagine much of the 40 million for SMB is that alone. Wouldn't be surprised if most NES owners had Super Mario Bros. It's like the figure of Sonic 1, it's the same due to this reason. I would love to know the honest sales figures of SMB without the re-releases, pack-ins, multicarts and the various Chinese/Russian pirate carts floating around but we don't think we are ever going to get it.

Also speaking of SMB 3, that didn't come out until 1990 in the US/1991 in Europe so much of the 17 million sales would be in the early 90s since by 1993 Japan sold 4 million copies of SMB3 so I'm guessing that it would be lower in the late 80s [probably 1-2 million at most] and wouldn't really count.

If we are talking about console sales then there should be at least some Atari 2600 games like Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Pitfall and yes E.T since that console was really popular by the late 70s early 80s. As for home computers, in some parts of the world they were more popular than consoles so surely some games on them would be high sellers. Now I wonder about what popular Speccy and C64 games would be best sellers and whether they are over the million mark? Surely Jet Set Willy would be one of them (even if it is a buggy game). What about Spelunker or Choplifter that were popular in Japan and America at the time?

The article could be a joke but if it isn't then the writer should do some more research like a timeline from 1980 to 1989 with later releases not counting (e.g. SMB3) looking at all the platforms whether it is home computers or consoles at known gaming regions (JP, US, EU).

I think that those numbers actually are mostly just NES sales. Super Mario Bros. 3 sold 18 million on the NES alone, for instance. That is a fact. The original Game Boy version of Tetris alone apparently actually sold 35 million copies, so that list there is wrong indeed... they used a too low number, and should have listed just the GB version; that alone sold more than the number they listed, though yes, a lot of those sales were in the '90s (it was a packin with many systems and wasn't replaced until 1998's Tetris DX, after all).

Of course the numbers do include packins though, yeah. That is always true though. Sonic numbers for the Genesis include the packin copies of Sonics 1 and 2 as well.

Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt are counted individually on the multicarts, that's true, and did sell tens of millions thanks to being packed in with lots of systems in the US and Europe. But still, they were the best selling games of the generation... and I don't think those numbers there include remakes, no. NES SMB did sell 40.24 million copies, NES alone (though that does include SMB/Duck Hunt, SMB solo, and SMB/Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet, since all three carts have the game on it). Of course that includes packins, lots and lots of them, but no company would ever tell you separate packin and non-packin sales. And anyway, with how many systems it was packed in with, I don't know how many people actually bought it in a store... in Japan they did, since Japan never gets packin games, but elsewhere?

That depends on whether you're doing "sold in the '80s" or "released in the '80s". Both are valid lists I think.

I agree that Atari 2600 games that sold a lot should be on the list, that's definitely a big flaw. I very highly doubt that any computer games would make it, though. Computer game sales never match console sales, I think...

The dates on most of those NES games are inaccurate. Golf came out in '86 and Excitebike and Duck Hunt were NES launch titles. The latter being packed in with the DX set.

Also, Tetris wasn't a Nintendo property until 1987. Atari originally owned the partial license. It was held up in litigation until '88.
