The Godzilla King of the Monsters MEGA Thread!

I'm a huge Godzilla (Gojira in Japan)fan and I thought it would be a great idea to start a thread dedicated to The King of all Kaiju (怪獣, kaijū is a Japanese word that literally translates to "strange beast"). I remember staying up to like 1AM when I was a kid to catch all the late night Godzilla movies. That Mathew Broderick 1998 Godzilla film was a friggin train wreck of a movie. The new movie coming out in 2014 via Legendary Pictures will hopefully be a proper Godzilla movie done right.

They're rather campy by modern standards, they generally feature lots of grown men fighting in giant rubber monster suits after all.

But they're a lot of fun if you like quirky action :D

any godzilla's got the mst3k treatment ?

They watched 2 Godzilla movies in total on MST3K I think.
Godzilla vs. Megalon and Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster.

But they also watched a lot of Gamera (another Kaiju franchise) movies.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla is the best one I think. Thought it was well made with decent special effects. Still was weird seeing Godzilla as the bad guy and Mechagodzilla as the good guy. Thats something thats hard to wrap your head around. I didnt like Final Wars that much. Seemed to copy The Matrix too much and they tried to cram too much stuff into there. The battles werent that impressive. It had its moments though. Dont think I "hate" any Godzilla movie because even the lesser ones have their entertaining moments.

Just love giant robot movies like Robot Jox and Robot Wars.

Comic con trailer released, real voice of father of atomic bomb used (I give Japan credit for keeping Godzilla roots and dealing with the whole psychology of this then creating a story from it now and then), but Godzilla shows you he was born from death (bomb makers) device and he IS death.

Pacific Rim seems like typical USA cgi corny fluff with people in Matrix 3 like mechs but way bigger fighting dragons with shit punchlines and will just appear on SyFy channel in 7 months with their HORRIBLE cgi movies (not saying PR has horrible cgi). I'm sure Japan will chuckle at it and with a speedracer voice saying "Ha ! More American Shit !" like they did with Godzilla 1998. T2 and Jurassic Park had great cgi but since then has been a lazy crutch for movies since. Japan uses computers to erase wires as their warriors fly in air but we use it for everything. That is also why Godzilla killed the USA Zilla (cgi) within 30 seconds, oh and the main reason was because Zilla was a disgrace.

Hope that the new Godzilla movie doesn't disappoint! If that trailer is any indicator, they are certainly in line with the classics.

Any idea on a release date, or is it TBD sometime in 2014?

Toho Kingdom states "May 16, 2014 (USA)"

Officially distributing, but unofficially watching this like a hawk so we don't fuck it up again. It was actually a past director of old Godzilla movie idea to make a new Godzilla movie in 3D in 2006 or something but needed Legendary Pictures money in 2009 so it was supposed to release in 2012 but Ironman writers were hired and new actors so most likely summer 2014. Perhaps I been following this for too long :p. Technically it's a Warner Bros/Legendary/Toho/Yoshimitsu Banno Movie.

One more thing, Legendary did release like a 10 second trailer (it was on youtube) but Comic cons extended it (like trailer I posted) but I believe both aren't 100% actual trailers, that is being worked on now. Those are I guess "beta trailers" like this from 1998, which I don't think any of this appeared in movie (unless deluxe edition idk ?).

Just watched that new Godzilla movie clip, and I'm.. not sure what to think,
I mean, here Toho was all like "we want to take a long break from Godzilla, then come back with much improved Godzilla!" (or something to that extent)
and what do my eyes see in the clip? the standard 2000 Godzilla, which is okay cause it was a badass suit, but somehow I was expecting them
to go all CGI with an enormously detailed monster/city/enemies, yet it seems like its just gonna be another standard Godzilla movie that could have come right after Final Wars.

Not that that would bother me, Its just that I was hoping for something new.

Anyhoo, as long as they keep the alien bieber haired little emo boys out of the franchise I'd buy every new Godzilla they make!

They took almost a decade off. Yeah it might be meh, but a fun campy meh movie. I'm not sure if that suit is being used as that beta trailer was initially only 10 seconds long in 2012. Was just a couple second clip of Godzilla, the roar, then Legendary Pictures taking up rest of time.

Yeah practical effects sure make a movie in my oppinion too.
But Pacific rim seems to have plenty of instances of Practical effects.
For example all of the cockpit insides are practical, and that's something :)

Pacific Rim looks to be complete crap. My brother showed me a clip for it (without telling me what it was) and I thought that it was a clip from the "mockbuster" version. The acting seems terrible and the cgi is just boring. When I was a kid my aunt and uncle owned every single Godzilla movie on VHS so I watched them all. For some reason Son of Godzilla just clicked with me and is probably my favorite.

I have a bit more faith in Guillermo Del Toro than that. He grew up with kaiju films and classic mecha anime (they got more of them in Spanish speaking countries in the 70's than English speaking ones did) and respects both genres. He also really hasn't made a movie I haven't enjoyed.

The reaction from Japan has been overwhelmingly positive so far. Hideo Kojima has been tweeting that you can't call yourself Japanese if you don't go and see Pacific Rim. It's also projected to perform better there than it is here.

And the Japanese like our CGI shit when it works and have attempted it themselves with stuff like the Tetsujin 28 movie (which was kind of cute but not great). They've also been waffling on the possibility of a CGI Mazinger Z movie for a while now.

USA Godzilla, The Hulk 2003, Bayformers (I maintain the first one was passable for what it was but the sequels can die in a fire) and Jackson Kong weren't bad because they were CGI. They were bad because they were bad films. I like when stuff is done traditionally too, but I'm also glad I live in a time where spectacles like Pacific Rim can exist.

I say this as a lifetime fan of both mecha and kaiju. I'm very excited to see the movie on Friday. I don't expect it to be perfect but I think it'll at least be a fun ride.

From what I've been reading, the new Godzilla from Legendary will be entirely CGI. I'm not sure what the deal was with that teaser, other than to show that they intend to pay homage to the "real" Godzilla rather than pulling a Godzilla '98 thing. I don't imagine a big budget monster movie being produced in the US from a reputable studio would ever have a guy in a suit.

Robot Jox is a surprisingly competent film given that it was a B Movie. It probably deserves to be more of a cult classic than it is. If nothing else it's worth seeing for the cheese factor alone.

I hear you and agree on some things (some I said myself) but overall it looks cheesy as shit. I mentioned T2 and Jurassic Park made great use of cgi. (Even look better than many cgi effects today, looks at syfy channel). I never said Zilla or Hulk were bad because of cgi I said they were bad overall and I feel asleep in movies watching Hulk and Kong because it was bad overall. But directors think just because it has decent cgi then movie will be good. No, there are other aspects to movies. I mentioned Japan uses cgi and computers, but NO WHERE as much as us. Fans of monster movies and "nothing good about movies except the cgi in it age" will probably like it, kids watching 50 commercials of it in 2 hours might be tempted to see it but it looks cheesy. Why Japan is supposedly behind this is beyond me, it's looks kiddy. Now if guy said "if you don't watch Godzilla 2014 you are not Japanese that might hold weight as Toho is officially and unofficially involved and it's past Godzilla director story with Toho executive producers) so it's a joint ventue both USA and Japan could enjoy but PR ? Some got paid to say that I'm sure, but take a poll of population and see what they really think about the Movie then.

I don't care if it's cgi or a guy in suit, I'll watch it.

Like I said before, beta trailers usually don't use footage in final movie most of time. The actual trailer is being made now so we will see if it's cgi or suit.

It's just a remake anyway, and if it's some cgi and some suit, it might be meh but a good meh.
