This one time.. I.. Played Strider, and I was all like "JUMPING IN DA TREEZ, SLASHING THE ENEMIES, OH GOD HOW REPETITIVE, WAIT A MINUTE, THIS AIN'T MONKEY ISLAND!"
True Story.

They "evolved" the game to something metroidlike, so no buy for me.
This....looks....awesome. Strider 2 is good times as well.
Cruddy looking middleware: Check. Bright splashy flashy playstation style translucent light: Check. Floaty looking jumps: Check. Yep, this looks like Strider 2 HD to me.
The original Strider designer is not involved with this.
"Now with Seizurevision!!"
Not going to happen. Should be obvious after all this time that Sega doesn't care anymore. Some place like Way Forward would actually have to buy the rights and do it themselves, a 3rd party company.
Waiting for Sega themselves to do it? You'll be waiting a long time....and chances are high that its going to suck when it does(See: Golden Axe beast Rider, Altered Beast PS2, cancelled SOR PS2, numerous TERRIBLE Sega Ages remakes, 60% of new Sonic titles, etc).
Looks awful!
Once again Capcom hands over another classic game character to a 3rd party developer so they can turn it into a shitty budget title.
I've said it before and I'll keep saying it. There is NOTHING wrong with Golden Axe Beast Rider. Outside of Shenmue's 70 man battle and Spike Out Battlestreet, Golden Axe Beast Rider has the best group fighting engine of any 3D beat-em up style game period. If "Sega" hadn't destroyed Secret Level for not making block busters we might have gotten to see what that engine could do in an online multiplayer version. But nope, internet reviewers united and destroyed a good game for no real reason.
This Strider 2 remake on the other hand just looks like a sad flashy bit of nonsense.
Here is my old review for Golden Axe Beast Rider on 360. I can't speak for the PS3 version but supposedly the two are identical. The 360 game has spot on controls, if the PS3 version or your TV set introduces ANY lag you will have a hard time with the parry and evade system. Beast Rider is that hardcore.
I wonder if they are trying to make it more like the NES game. A remake of the NES game would be cool. It was actually based more on the original manga. I've always envisioned a more conjoined strider universe where the Grand Master was secretly responsible for the zane mind control computers. That would be how he got so many to come to his side. Capcom should let me write the plot for the new Strider. :p
I only really enjoyed the original arcade Strider of 1989. As well as the later arcade-quality ports to PS1, PS2, Xbox and PSP, and to a slightly lesser extent, the excellent conversion to MD/Genesis in 1990.
Note: If you were wealthy in Japan, you could've owned an arcade-quality port of Strider the same year the arcade came out, 1989, on the Sharp X68000 computer, years and years before PS1 or any of the later Capcom Classics Collections came out.
-Never liked Strider on NES
-Never tried Strider on SMS
-Hated Strider II / Strider Returns on MD/Genesis (and Amiga)
-Wasn't impressed with the Strider clone called Run Saber on SNES
-Was disappointed with Strider on PC-Engine Arcade Card CD. Too bad the older SuperGrafx version never made it out of development hell.
-Was only mildly amused with the Strider inspired / unofficial sequel Cannon Dancer (aka Osman) in arcades (well MAME actually) by Mitchell Corp, that was staffed by ex-Capcom people including Kouichi "Isuke" Yotsui.
-Didn't really enjoy Strider 2 in arcades, on the Capcom Sony ZN-2 hardware (a slightly beefed up PS1 board) nor the PS1 console port. I only bought it because it came with the original arcade Strider on a 2nd disc.
So really, I only truly loved the original arcade Strider, and the direct arcade ports.
So far I kinda LIKE what I see in this new Strider for current and next-gen consoles and PC, but I remain skeptical. I'm most interested in the so called "Metroidvania" aspect. That said, the visuals are too cheap-looking, like something out of an iOS game.
My biggest grip is that it looks too much like Strider 2 arcade/PS1.
