How does it compare to the 3DO version? Anybody know? I would imagine the PC version being the best if you can get it to run nowadays.
I have NEVER seen this game for Sega CD face to face, I always thought it was a 3DO exclusive. It must be rare, there is a complete one on ebay right now for 80+$ .
It's rare but it's not really expensive. I bought mine for less than 10 dollars on an auction site. I used to play the pc version a lot and really liked it, but I find the Sega CD version a bit on the painful side. The controls feel really awkward. As for the 3DO version, I can't compare as I have never played it.
Just watched a video of all 3 versions on youtube. The 3DO and PC version look Identical. The Sega CD version has been redrawn and is less detailed and overall bad.
Guess PC might be the way to go if its even possible to play nowadays> Its gotta be a DOS game
The 3DO version may be the best as it has extra graphical effects over the PC version, and may have slightly better video quality. One thing to watch out for is that some of those videos claiming to be from the 3DO version look like they are actually from the PC version.
3DO version is far superior to the PC's which is already far better than the Sega CD fugly version.
3DO version or nothing, seriously. Graphics, sound and gameplay are the only ones worth getting among the three versions IMO.
Sega CD version is ugly as hell, the 3DO version looks the best, but the PC version is the best median because it still looks good and actually retains the soundtrack.
The first two MegaRace games (note: the second one is PC only) show that FMV like that does not, in any possible way, work for racing games. They're such horrible, horrible games to actually play... the third MegaRace (which I also have for PC) is a pretty bland futuristic racing game, but at least it IS just a bland futuristic racing game, which makes it vastly superior to the first two.
Seriously, beyond nostalgia, I don't quite see how MegaRace 1 or 2 could be seen as decently-playing games. They've got plenty of amusing video in them, but the gameplay is horrendously stiff because of how the track is alll FMV... awful, awful stuff. Futuristic racing games are some of my favorite kinds of games, but MegaRace and its sequel are not games I like at all. It's unfortunate (I wanted to like MR2 when I first played it several years ago, I really did...), but true.
I'm going to have to disagree with you. Megarace 2 at least I found to be pretty playable and as a total package with the video cutscenes it was pretty enjoyable, IMHO of course. Megarace 3 blows goats, simple as. As well as being bland, ugly looking, and bad to control, what the hell did they do to Lance Boyle?Quote:

Playable? What's playable about that thing? The idea of using FMV video bits to make up a track, then putting sprites on it for cars, utterly fails. The controls are poor, the jumps between screens are awful, everything feels far too railed to work as a competent racing game... it's an awful, awful game, and from what little I've played of it, the first MegaRace seems even worse. They're probably two of my least favorite futuristic racing games of the decade, and that subgenre's one I absolutely love.Quote:
