^I hear ya, Im playing for nostalgic reasons I suppose. It was a legendary game since its release and I was around for that so I know, I remember beating it for 32x but Im sure I either did a level skip or god mode. I think Im going to finish the psx version since it has the 'old school' graphics, then replay it one day with the upgraded graphics.
I can't argue that. There wasn't much mental challenge to any of Carmack's games. I loved Doom and all the ID Doom clones like Heretic and Hexen. They were mindless fun for me. If I wanted a mental challenge I had other things to provide that. However, the fact that you didn't find it entertaining. Well, I guess you can't appeal to everyone I suppose. Also, I loved playing deathmatch and co-op with firends. The sound of the modem connecting is still a very nostalgic thing for me thanks to Doom and a few other games.Quote:

^yeah I actually just googled all the Wolf3D mods for Doom. What a wide world of FPS' we live in. I dont have the time to get into them all at the moment. Going to finish DOOM psx fist and be happy at the completion.
Does the PC version of DOOM have "intermissions" or any story at all in game that was maybe cut from the PSX?
I feel like everyone else has covered the major points, but I want to reiterate some things add my own two cents.
Doom was an amazing game, the first major FPS that really captured the public's attention and started the craze as we know it today. It's two most notable 'first in gaming' contributions was good multiplayer functionality and community modding. If you were asking me how you should proceed to enjoy Doom, I'd say you should find a nice vanilla 'source port', acquire a copy of the Ultimate Doom or Doom 2 wad and have fun. When id software released Doom's source code, lots of people took it upon themselves to spiffy up the code and release them as 'source ports', re-releasing the game engine but adding new features like graphical improvements, bug fixes and other tweaks. The best in my opinion is Zdoom, It is easily the most popular, and still has a pretty solid 'Doom' foundation but has an amazing amount of community created mods and levels to try when you get bored the original game. It has a OpenGL version that makes the graphical options even spiffier.
You should also really try to find some online matches, it's the granddaddy of deathmatch and is a breath of fresh air from the 'duck and cover to heal' post-Halo/Call of Duty shooters. Zandronum is the 'state of the art' multiplayer experience (it is a continuation of the popular Skulltag), and usually has a lot of people on their servers, but I prefer the simple, classic take on deathmatch with Odamex, which as I mentioned before has been ported to the original Xbox and is cross-platform compatible with the PC and Linux versions. The only downside is that not a lot of people play on Odamex servers unless it is a scheduled event or the weekend.
Keep in mind that Doom was not only competitive deathmatch, but also a really fun game to play co-op, which you can do as well on a lot of servers for both Zandronium and Odamex.
Doomworld has a nice 'Cacowards' feature that showcases the best wads of a particular year, and is a good place to start to try out some custom wads.
