WWF No Mercy for N64 also Virtual Pro Wrestling series (japan)

Well as some of you may know AKI, the company that made WCW vs The World, and all the popular WCW & WWF wrestling games for the N64 originally started in Japan (like Fire Pro Wrestling) with Virtual Pro Wrestling and was supposed to be a New Japan Pro Wrestling + MMA & K1 fighters megamix of a fighting game in japan. Just like Fire Pro but in 3D .

When the games came stateside they acquired official WCW & WWF licenses for american audiences. The early games like WCW vs The World as well as the WCW ones on the N64 actually still included wrestlers from New Japan, All Japan, real life MMA fighters too, but with diferent names obviously but the game offered a RENAME mode (just like Fire Pro).

When AKI attained the title for WWF, their stateside releases started to cut out all of the Japanese and Professional MMA fighters out of the mix altogether. The Japanese versions of the games for N64 each had over 100 wrestlers and fighters, from american and japanese wrestling, to legends like Andre the Giant and Giant Baba (jap legend) , to the MMA fighters now even more than before are included.

Now the last and greatest one released for the system was WWF No Mercy, I never got to play this one, I peaked at Wrestlemania 2000. I am playing No Mercy now and it is awesome. Sick people online even released a graphic upgrade pak for it if playing on emu. Just look at these graphics

They somehow even added new characters such as 80s Hogan to the game. Anyways, I am just trying to get the hang of No Mercy again and beat the Storyline mode so I can prepare for the japanese menus of Virtual Pro Wrestling 2. The very last AKI wrestling/ fighting game (since in the japanese version you can pick MMA rules and such). I am using NO MERCY to train for Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 that boasts over 110 characters. The only thing I have for the game is a save file of all the fighters names in english. The menus and story will remain Japanese.

I prefer VP2 for the real fighting. Its funny as a child I enjoyed the game for the wrestling, as an adult I enjoy it for the real life fighters.

I never did find a translated save file for the actual console.. (to put on that save pack thingy i mean)

i despise MMA, but pro wrestling has a nostalgic pull for me. VP2 might be worth it for the roster though

No Mercy might be the most modded or hacked game of all time. All the wrestlers that they have added to it.

I never played it. I'm just going by what I read.

Pro Wrestling & MMA are both pretty awesome. I've been doing a lot of reading in the old Wrestling Observer Newsletters of the 90's and it's incredible how the sport of MMA was pretty much born out of pro wrestling(and the other way around in a way at the same time). The UFC's early draws, Ken Shamrock & Dan Severn were pro wrestlers, and Pride FC was born out of the ashes of the UWFI promotion in Japan.

Wow this game is amazing! I always thought the very last AKI game released in america was Wrestlemania 2000. This game has a huge in depth story mode. And since it comes from Virtual Pro Wrestling (which featured REAL fighters) you can make an MMA or Muay Thai / Kickboxer in the create a character mode.

My guy is so awesome to watch, he is pure Muay Thai (kickboxer) and his moves are so brutal. I cant wait to switch over to VP2 since that one is supposed to have an even more "mma mode".

Im a fan of MMA though my sport of choice in real life is just full contact kickboxing. Not a fan of wrestling and taking the fight to the ground, but thats just me.

Love these games, even though it's 'inferior' I prefer WCW Revenge just for the roster.

Totally agree, Revenge was way more fun to play because of its more entertaining roster,
WWF had a very weird roster at the time, with wrestlers who just weren't entertaining,
WCW had The Macho Man, and Nash and Hall, and NWO Hogan and Sting, WWF had viscera and road dog type characters,
even lower rank WCW workers like Mortis/Glacier/Disco were more entertaining then even the lowest WWF worker.

The only thing that's unforgivable with Revenge is that it did not have Ralphus.

and No Mercy was also pretty lame to look at, they had a real drab color scheme going on back then,
the whole RAW black/red theme, or the Smackdown Blue/White theme, WCW had a shitload of colors going on,
it was like watching the circus, very entertaining.

No Mercy did offer much more customization though, which is why it is remembered so fondly.

I wish I could speak more about Virtual Pro Wrestling 2, but the language barrier kept me from popping the game into my N64,
luckily now that Krikkz has made his own N64 flashcart we'll see some more N64 translations, sadly I fear no real skilled romhacker
will be interested in tackling VPW2 for the mere fact that No Mercy is much more popular.

and don't get me wrong though, I love all AKI wrestling games on the N64, I feel they all offer something amazing.
