There is no way the SNES is pulling those scores all the way into 1997. Scoring close to the PSX? No.
I know its the "reviewers" score/opinion, but I found some further evidence to back up my complete dismissal of EGM after all.

Those aren't bad marks for the Genesis too, considering the Saturn was almost gone and Dreamcast was on the horizon in 1998.

Remember that the buyers' guides these scores appeared in released early in the listed year, so those scores really are for the previous year. And the SNES had a pretty good lineup in 1996! That score was well earned.

I just think its insulting to give a system relegated to budget gaming a score close to what was the top system at the time. I don't know how you can have high scores for a system with clearly diminishing game output. They ragged the NES during its final years, but somehow the SNES seems awesome compared to superior systems with far better 3D output? No.

Exactly.
Of course the scores of let's say "what system to get in 1992, check our review" was printed in Dec 1991.
That year (1992 buyers guide) they ALL stated the snes has horrible slowdown and Genesis is king, then look what happened after.
But the SNES was getting 8's and 9's while the Genesis was getting 5's and 4's (3 years in a row) in those same 3 years (while basically systems were dying/on life support) snes was still getting 9's, 8's and 7's.
Sushi X was the only one to give the Genesis a 7 in 1997 when Genesis 3 released, the only 7 in 3 years. Yet SNES got 8's.
A 16 bit system get's an 8 when the Saturn is slipping ? For, uh, what sfa2 ?
ABF, what did you think of Bernie statement around 1997 ?

In 1996, the SNES saw releases in the US including Kirby Super Star, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Final Fight 3, Mega Man X3, Super Mario RPG, Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals, Tetris Attack, and Donkey Kong Country 3. That's nobody's idea of a "budget" lineup, and it's a lot better than, say, the NES's lineups in 1992 or 1993. It may be better than the NES in 1991 too.
In comparison, about all the Genesis had for major exclusives that year were Vectorman 2, Sonic 3D Blast, and maybe Virtua Fighter 2...

Best RPG Video Game: Ultima NES
Most Challenging Video Game: Phantasy Star
EGM`s illogical reviewing from day one kept it from being taken too seriously.

It`s not the scores given to the SNES that don`t make sense, it`s how they compare to how they scored everything else all along.

In 1993, the NES received scores of 4 4 4 5 and for 1994 it received 3 4 4 5
In 1993, the NES saw releases in NA including Batman Returns, Alien3, Mickey's Safari in Letterland, Zen: Intergalactic Ninja, Tiny Toon Adventures 2, Yoshi's Cookie, Kirbie's Adventure, Battletoads & Double Dragon, DuckTales 2, Mighty Final Fight, Bubble Bobble 2, and Tetris 2.
Here are quotes from each EGM reviewer (except Sushi-X) that give insight to just how impartial EGM's reviewers were one year (1996?):
"The Genesis almost always had graphics and sound that weren't anywhere near as good as the Super NES."
"Still, I can't give the Genesis a very high score because the system doesn't bring a nostalgic tear to me eye like a SNES does."
"Of course, the system's small color palette and awful sound chip make the Genesis look extremely dated, even when compared to the Super NES."
"You Genesis fans are going to kill me for saying this, but I never really caught on as to why the Genny was such a big deal. ...I really can't think of many reasons why I'd recommend one to anyone when the Super NES can be found for just as cheap almost anywhere."
Only the most reality separated SNES fanboy can't see what they literally spell out for readers.

Some of those NES games are good, but most aren't at the level of the 1996 SNES library... but you're right, considering the quality of that library, those NES scores are a bit low. I can understand it though, by 1992-1993 (the years those "1993" and "1994" guides would be for) the NES was seven and eight years old. In comparison, in 1996 the SNES was only five years old. You'll notice that in '97 the SNES's scores definitely decline, both because of the much thinner release list that year, because the N64 had released, and because the system was now beyond five years old (that being a common generational divide line).

Sure, I agree that after 1991, EGM clearly turned against the Genesis (remember that they do say it's the top system in 1990 and 1991, though). No question. But look at their favorite system list... Genesis 1990-1991, SNES 1992-1995, PS1 1996, N64 1997, PS1 again 1998-2000... tracking pretty close to public opinion there, other than a bit lower than average opinion of the Genesis after 1991.

Sheath and most of you guys, here, are right. The truth is staring everybody right in the face. Genesis was gold man, flicking off NES, after 1 SHOCKING egm review over snes, it got shitted on basically after that yet was still popular against snes. Did snes have 1 or 2 more years better like in 1995 when Donkey Kong or sequels was big then in 1996, sure I agree those and sfa2 on snes was cool and better than genesis line up during 16 bit deathbed (remember X Perts). But Vectorman 1&2, Comix Zone, VR, and others were no joke either. But what system lasted longer. Yup, the genesis. But did genesis FOR 3 YEARS deserve 5's and 4's while snes got 9's and 8's against 32 bit systems ? Fuck no.

So in late 1996 (for 1997 buyers guide) the SNES got higher scores than Saturn with Virtua Cop, Fighting Vipers, Daytona USA, Virtua Fighter 2, Sega Rally, Knights, Fighters Megamix, Panzer Dragoon 2, Quake, Guardian Heroes, Die Hard Arcade, (arcade perfect*) SF Alpha 2, Netlink internet and VCD movie capabilities etc. Riiight.
I would dare say a Saturn with Rhea or Phoebe sd and isos is "better" than a SNES its library. Sonic Jam for my 2d Sonic needs, astral or metal slug for 2d action, Shinobi Legions or Guardians for 2d beat em up, shmups, fighters, racers, movie watching...maybe that is my Sega bias talking. But think about it.
"SNES > Genesis/Saturn/Dreamcast combined, blah blah Earthbound/Mother 2 140,000 sales > any game ever made blah blah" - Internet
"I admit the SNES was around before I was born but I still remember trying to play Earthbound while in my moms tummy when she played it because I knew the SNES was a classic console with a classic library with no rival" - Youtubers
Post # 1 has everything in detail I scanned or gathered up from internet.

Damn this was an ancient bump but I'm fine with this seeing as the post pertains to what's happening. Maybe someone can answer this before I seriously do some post digging. Why was Vector2013 banned? I remember him from a long time ago but going thru his post history I don't see anything that merited it. Maybe he posted nudes that got deleted?
I've been starting to consider doing a little clean up in the bannings and see who might actually be worth giving a second chance to.

I'm Vector. I'll explain further, I just wrote a paragraph explaining everything but my windows 10 crashed and now I have to rewrite everything again.
Can't edit post 1 so I'll put those pics here instead.
Anyway, sorry for the wait and edit but hopefully my windows doesn't crash during this text too ha (it was upgrading forever). I will try and keep this as short and accurate as I can (with proof).
I am vector(2013) aka djvectorman aka sunsfan. I was on like 5 Sega related forums and isozone as such. (Damn, for almost a decade now). But now I'm mainly just here. http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...orman-feedback https://dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewto...97250&start=40 ( the ancient thread I bumped there thread actually lead to a youtube video on subject =) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x5a0GcbweI&t=276s ) http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/thr...post2148384632 http://forums.sega.com/showthread.ph...help-!!!/page2 https://dreamcast-talk.com/forum/vie...?t=4839#p55470 https://dreamcast-talk.com/forum/vie...=4829&start=30 http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/...smash-pack-15/ https://dreamcast-talk.com/forum/vie...=4829&start=20
etc.
I was hacked at 1 of the sites but the admin helped me out big time, I believe 3 fake accounts were created with different names and they even used and hacked my old email were I signed in from, they sent me his IP info as he hacked there before (I forget which site though). I think it was Mr Sega following me around on forums because I cursed him out and helped get him banned (everyone was tired of his Sega is coming back with a console thread and lies every month and misinformation on specs from past) from DC-Talk (he even followed me here). Anyway, I don't really want to repeat this but I don't want to be rude to you either so I'll answer you. I wasn't banned on any forum ever except here by Joe. I wasn't banned here for nudes (who was?), it was because Joe kept ignoring me when I asked him how he was able to convert his Game Sack episode to cinepak or answer where iso was because I wanted to see it play in Fusion for myself and I got upset (rude ignoring somebody 10 times). (The guy who converted the episode for Game Sack pm me here and we talked about a lot of things, cool guy, even sent me iso). Me and Joe argued, he suspended me 3 times with "I told you that were on thin ice before now you are suspended again act your age I got the last word and last laugh on you now ha ha!" or "Calm down, take 5 days off for you ha !" or "Stop cursing" yet cursing in replies to me https://ibb.co/eOBcXR even editing/erasing or asking him to erase my arguments towards him to help have less clutter in thread like we agreed. Then I asked him why a guy said something about him being creepy with kids or why the guy had a signature quote of Joe talking about kids and if it was creepy humor or what was it all about with a screenshot to back it up http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...l=1#post602060 , he got angry and edited one of my quotes in his posts to make it look like I said I molested kids http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...l=1#post602106 (which oddly says it was edited by Melf not Joe a year later "Last edited by Melf; 11-21-2014 at 06:15 PM") and I became angry and Joe banned me before he left site last time (ironically we all were discussing homebrew, old magazines like egm, sega visions like this thread in between arguing etc http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...l=1#post602093 ) after me, Tom, etc argued. I guess wayyy later after I was banned Joe had a meltdown, insulted site, insulted members and left. (He is back now, but I remember members upset at Joe's remarks). http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...l=1#post701486
Honestly those situations were awful all around tbh but later everything was water under bridge http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...l=1#post701752. Everything is still in the middle of Game Sack thread if you feel like digging, it was years ago. http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthr...l=1#post602606 I cleaned up my act, many people agreed my ban was unmerited (as you seemed to notice) and Melf let me back. I was accused of being like 10 other people or trolls on this site so Melf had to check everything out and saw I wasn't arguing etc with people in years, saw I wasn't other people, know I'm not trolling just asking questions here and agreed to let me back permanently under the name Vector now (I think there is another guy named vectormanbx here or something so I'm using just Vector here) and helped me with some things as we just recently talked. Melf can back me up on all this if you want to ask him, just pm him or others or just click the links above. I hoped I cleared everything up in detail and as shortly as I could (with links for proof if you don't want to dig). I have no problems with anybody here now, if somebody doesn't like me because of past or gets upset when I ask them directly why they seem to say things about me out the side of their neck though, I could care less. Thanks for checking out this thread bro, I remember you too BonusKun you were cool as hell man you basically only came into a thread if you had to and always gave good info (glad you are a super mod). IMO, there is important info in post 1 for members to see if they are interested. Do you agree BonusKun?
On that note, I'd like to keep this thread on topic and discuss EGM or other VG magazines or online articles mentioning Sega or having reviews on systems and etc. I do not wish to address the banning topic anymore. Do I have your support on that?

Had (well still have at bro's place) EGM Buyers Guide from 1994 till 2000 something. Really enjoyed these yearly issues (namely the ones from the 90s). Well, outside of the Sega bashing, but that's how mags back then were and we just had to deal with it. Only mags that seemed to have loved Sega enough were GamePlayers and GameFan for us in Canada/US.
One cool thing I noticed in these Buyers Guides were Castlevania ranking very high or number one on the SNES/Genesis top 10 lists. As well as in the EGM issue 100 top 100 and issue 150 top 150. This made me a late comer to the two 16-Bit vania games having bought (first SCIV then Bloodlines) and played them well into the 32-Bit era. Why I didn't appreciate them as much back then as I do now.

After reading your reply & digging a bit more I've decided to let sleeping dogs lie. I mulled over unbanning your old account but don't see a reason to anymore since this new account is the one you're active with now & we do have a very hard stance on people with duplicate accounts.
Anyways carry on with the thread and thank you for the explanation.
P.S. I was joking about the nudes posting.

Yes, I really love the audio on Bloodlines (I think its perfect for the Genesis) and Pyron color hack...ha and I was very very late on Bloodlines as all I heard was SCIV or Rondo was thee end all be all but in the 2000s I found myself like the 8-bit like game play but with 16 bit ambiance when I played it on Smash Pack 1.5. My favorite Buyers Guide was one I bought in December 1991, I couldn't believe they said the SNES was slow and Genesis will outshine it ha but in the future history had other plans I guess. Thank you bro. Yeah, I have no problem with old Vector account still being banned (I deserved it as I really dug into people even if I was just defending myself and no double accounts are allowed) as I'm active now on this one and things are cool here so it is cool, I appreciate the gesture and glad I could answer you thoroughly. What was your favorite EGM buyers guide bro?

Wish I'd started collecting mags prior to 94. But from that I recall my fave being around the ballpark between 94 to 98, those were also the good ol' days for me. I also started missing nice drawn mag covers and in magazine artwork, as during the 32-Bit era more and more switched the poorer aging CGI art. :p

Oh man I couldn't even remember which ones I read years ago. My palette was original for Gamefan Magazine since I actually knew/know a lot of the original editors from years ago. ECM, Kodomo, & Dangohead to name a few. Nowadays it's sad that we don't have much print media anymore but at the same time I knew it wouldn't last forever.
Gamefan had some of the best magazine layouts and spreads on their reviews bar-none.

Did you know the Knightmare persona at GameFan? And yes, agree on the mag layout and reviews.

Bomberman 2 and Vectorman 2 in the top 10s of all time? Can't take these guys seriously.

He was the one pretty passionate about the Saturn on the issues I've had (last 96 to 98).

Grandia was the number one most anticipated game for the Saturn in 1998. Aww...
