I have Salamander Deluxe for the saturn, IIRC it has the Arcade version of Life Force, the Arcade version of Salamander, and Salamander 2.

If you're in love with Raiden, a Jaguar is cheaper than a PC Engine and its port of Raiden is better.

Of course, a PSX is cheaper than both and its port of raiden is supreme.

I think the Contra-style instant respawn is one of the reasons why Life Force is the only shooter I have much patience for. Sure it made the game perhaps a little too easy, but it keeps the pacing consistent and also doesn't completely screw you over with the power ups, since you have an opportunity to scoop up your options as your next ship zooms into play.

In short, Life Force kicks ass.

Edit: I'm watching the PC Engine playthrough of Salamander right now, and I gotta say... I expected much better-quality music. I personally think the NES sounds better.

Super Raiden is an upgraded CD version (arguably better than the Jaguar version), there are also English and Japanese HuCard versions (PC Engine base consoles go for no more than Jaguars and TG-16 systems are cheap).

Super Raiden has redbook audio and 2 extra levels. But it's not superior to the Jaguar version, that's like saying the SMS version of R-Type is superior to the PC Engine version because it's really good for an SMS port and has an extra level. There is no question the jaguar port is more accurate.

There is a shop here in houston that has an Atari jaguar for sale for $7. I have yet to see a PC Engine ever go for that cheap, especially in the states.

All Konami shmups made for the PC Engine/CD are of top notch quality, in fact way above what you generally get in that system - especially for the HuCard format.

I don't know much about Jaguar hardware, but how easy is it to get a turbo controller for it? Raiden on Jaguar lacks autofire.

I think the lava stage music is phenomenal, probably the best soundtrack I've heard on the PC Engine.

Me thinks you need to listen to some other PCE sound tracks. Salamander doesn't sound phenomenal to me.

In the 90s, I was always a generation behind in video games. Actually, I still am. I didn't get a Playstation, until they made that redesigned model called the PSOne or PS1.
