Use the power of google, try other forums, and try stuff yourself. I've fixed many things in the past where I'd post on forums, nobody would know the answer so I'd just screw around until I'd figure it out on my own. Obviously it's better to ask around first but there's a lot of unknown stuff about consoles. But you should always be prepared that you have an issue where nobody has the answer.Quote:

Yeah, that was my first approach, but I couldn't find anything that sounded like the problem I was having, so I tried here. I have posted on other forums as well and am still checking Google, but no luck so far.
Howdy Folks. I'm having a little trouble with my Genesis and a friend referred me here.
Okay so here's my specs- I have a
-Sega Genesis Model 1 High-Def Graphics with the TMSS
-Sega CD Model 1
I recently got a SCD Model 1 and hooked it up to my genesis.
Everything was going swimmingly until suddenly, things weren't anymore.
The BIOS started launching with layers of sound missing, the "sonic magic finger dust" screen moves really slowly, and layers of sound and sound effects are missing in game. Thinking it was a problem with the game, I tried playing Sonic via Genesis to find the "SEGA" wasn't being said, the bass track was missing and the game was running poor.
I assumed the issue was with the SCD, so I unhooked my Genesis and tried again. Same issue. Game runs poorly, sounds are missing.
Really perplexed as to what went wrong here. Thoughts? Any additional info needed?
I''m forseeing the answer of "get a new genesis". This is upsetting because it already took me forever to find a TMSS high Def model 1 :/

I went ahead and took a picture of my Game Gear's main board, circling the capacitors(?) in question. Forgive me if this is a stupid problem, I just don't remember ever seeing any GG caps that look like this before.

Video please. Perhaps just your audio cable has a broken connection with one channel. Test the audio cord on something else that you know is working.Quote:

Second guy, No- but I was under the impression that that was the way you could tell if was the best version of model 1?
Sorry new to this.
One difference is TMSS versions have a slightly longer boot time, compared to the earliest model 1. Because TMSS added that warning message at startup.
Hmm I think you're thinking of the AV out. I'm pretty sure the controller port uses a DB9 connection. I've never torn down my genny before, not even sure if there's a way to just replace one and not the whole assembly.Quote:

Actually TMSS only means you have a later model 1. The very last model 1 is the worst one out there (it sounds like the early model 2s). Pretty much all non-tmss model 1s are gauranteed to be good. The pre-va3 model 1 the audio mixing circuit wasn't quite perfected so there's little differences but they still sound better than the last version of the model 1 by a mile.Quote:

So far, I cleaned up the case and RF shields in soapy water so they're like new now. The black stuff on the mainboard I tried to get off with a toothbrush damped with 91% rubbing alcohol. I got some of it off with elbow grease, however with the stuff around wire connectors and capacitors, I'm concerned about breaking a cap or wire connection trying to get the black gunk up.
I cleaned the slot connector by first picking out as much particles as I could with tweezers, then by using a microfiber cloth damped in rubbing alcohol wrapped around a credit card, then I used emery paper wrapped in the card to scrape the connectors, finally used compressed air to blow out moisture. I still have a problem with dust bunnies at the bottom of the slot that I can't reach.
Once everything dried, I put it back together about an hour ago and tried the console out again. All my work netted me about 10 extra seconds of uptime. Anyone got any suggestions what I can do to get this console working?
I'd really like to get some technical explanation for this, because the VA0 unit I have sounds way better than my VA6 despite the "not quite perfected" audio mixing. It's less muffled, clearer, compared to the VA6.Quote:
