Pffffft... S-video and composhite are like day and night.
-
Leave it to their ignorance. ;) I deal with these kind of people everyday.
-
Different strokes for different folks fellas.
On some of my consoles I find composite perfectly acceptable, and the added qaulity of S-Video adds nothing to the gaming experience.
However on other machines, mainly 2D based consoles and also my Saturn I'm really picky about having S-Video or SCART for the extra visual quality it brings to the games.
Personally I dont think having S-Video from say my Gamecube or Dreamcast is nescesarry as most games I own for them are 3D and the quality loss is virtually unnoticable when im sat 12 feet from the screen.

I use Component for almost all my consoles.
Consoles on Component video (Y/Pr/Pb)
Sega Genesis/CD/32X
SNES
PS2
Xbox

The reason they use composite is that when people want better picture, they have to buy another cable (usually ridicolously expensive)... just a way to make more money... I can't stand composite of RF at all anymore... but not all I have can output RGB (luckily Sega stuff does it).

Cable company here gives free Y/Pr/Pb cables for HDTV (Component Video), but my grandparents cable company charge 40 dollars for the cable. (and force you to use their cable, which is BS)

Hi everyone. I'm a longtime lurker who has a big problem: I can't play my genesis! I'll try to keep this short and hopefully somebody can help me.
Last month I purchased a Model 1 genesis, the kind that has the 5 second copyright screen. It worked fine up until today except the AC adapter cord needs to be bent slightly for it to work. This really isn't a problem as long as I don't move the genesis.
Anyway, it's hooked up very basic. The power adapter is plugged into the wall and I use a RF adapter (unfortunately) that goes directly into the TV. Today while playing streets of rage 2 the screen started going fuzzy. As time passed black lines appeared and it kept getting worse until finally the screen was black with snowy distortion on top of it. I could still hear the game playing but couldn't see it.
After screwing around with it I realized that if I put my TV on channel 3 it worked! This was odd because everything is set to channel 4 and for the last month I've needed the TV on 4 to play it. However later tonight it stopped working even on channel 3.
Now if I turn on my genesis sometimes the picture is distorted but the sound is clear, other times the sound is clear but the screen is crazy (like trying to watch a pay channel you don't get). The weird thing is when this happens if I change the channel or restart the TV then the problem switches (if the sound wasn't working then the video craps out and the sound works or vise versa). No matter what channel I have my TV on or what I do something is always distorted and snowy. Also after I turn the genesis off my TV will be black and white with only a buzzing sound until I restart it.
I'm hoping somebody here has run into this problem before and can help me out. Is it my RF adapter? Or worse...my genesis? It can't be returned so I hope it's a fixable problem. Sorry for the long post...

It sounds like the RF modulator is failing.
Get an AV cable for your Model 1 Genesis. Far better than RF anyway in terms of picture quality.
-
Wow that was fast. Is an AV cable the one with the red, white and yellow wires? Is there a special kind that I would need since the genesis itself only has 1 port and where would I buy a cable like this? Radioshack?
I'm trying to search the forums so I don't keep asking a million questions but I've yet to find what I'm looking for. Thanks for your help.

You model will only support a mono AV cable, so it will be yellow and white only.. It plugs into the round DIN connector on the back, and you will only be able to really find this on eBay...

Yes, that will work with the model 1.

If you want stereo you need to use the headphone jack at the front...
downside to that jack is it has it's own small amplifier on it... now MOST people probably won't give two shits and you could just use a stereo 3.5mm jack TO stereo RCA connector. They can be had for a couple bucks to get the stereo sound.
OR you can modify the console to give you straight audio (with out amplification which can induce some distortion when hooked to yet another amplifier or receiver). From the sounds of it though, you aren't much of an audiophile and the small (very minor) amount of distortion probably doesn't concern you.
OR of course you could always get a SegaCD! hee hee

The volume slider neither introduces distortion when it is turned up to 100%, nor takes any away as it is lowered. Any distortion is introduced before it gets to that point. As such, there is NOTHING wrong with keeping the volume slider at 100% at all times (where is belongs) since that is the closest point to true line level. Any amplifier which would clip with the Genesis volume at 100% is simply a shitty amplifier, probably purchased at Wal*Mart. ;)

MD vol at 100% is little higher than line levels I know... but my Russian HiFi handles everything and can break ear-drums with decent enough speakers.
