Does anyone have any info on the JVC drive used in some model 1 Mega/Sega CD systems that look like the picture on the bottom of this page http://www.mydan.com/content/megacd/inside_megacd3.htm (not my site)? Is it more on less reliable than the Sony drive?
well I decided that the reason my recently purchased genesis1 wasn't working with my TV was probably because its video was shot. (worked with a few games, audio worked with all the rest). All games flawless in my old nomad.
so I bought myself a genesis 3, and sent out for the few parts needed to mod her. It's got the new video chip anyway, and I figure in the slim chance it was tv incompatibility, the new video chip in the genesis3 may play better with modern HD setups.
well the genesis3 is here, so I'm wondering if somebody can help me identify if mine's a stereo version or not. No, I don't have the simple cord. But most of the ones I've seen on sites like gamesx look like mine. Guess I could always just pull audio from the plug and test her, but I thought somebody might recognize her right off.
here's the new one:

I could really use a break on this stereo bit. I've been having really bad luck with genesis units. I'm pretty sure my last "ebay tested" unit has 'grumpy' video, and this new one (link) was appearantly tested with that jaguar rf unit it came with. funny, I don't see any place to plug it in...
I'm starting to really hate ebay, and I just pray this thing works.
edit: also, while I'm in there, I've seen some youtube videos of genesis3 specific compatibility mods. virtua racing, 32x and sms adapter. They don't seem especially useful (maybe virtua racing) but if it's easy to do, and there are instructions out there, I'd really like a link to them.
Does the genesis model 3 have stereo sound? Im considering buying a model 3 simply because it would save me a ton of space and i like the design. I have a model 1 that i can bring out when i need to use my Sega CD.
It has stereo AFAIK, you need a Stereo AV cable for that.
that's the thing, I've heard that some do, and some don't. For example two modded ones that I've asked about on ebay had sellers which confirmed that they had 'dual mono' modded out, but I've seen as many people confirm that theirs has stereo output.
As near as I can tell, it's a lottery with no way to tell if it's stereo just by looking externally. Hopefully my rca jack order comes in, so I can easily figure it out--or hell, figure out if it's even powering on. They are a cute little space-saver though, and I've already started driling holes in the metal shield and marking up my case for cutting.
Yeah thats what i keep getting yes and no, lol. I do have stereo AV cables.
Thanks for the fast replies guys
Couple questions here...
What are the major differences between a Model 1 and 2 Genny(Sound and video wise)? Which one would be best to own?
I have a model 1 genny here and when I put a game in, it won't play unless I clean the slot with rubbing alcohol. Where would be a good place to get a cleaner to clean the inside the slot?
Thanks!
MD2 becomes the best possible thing soundwise after extensive modding, MD1 is the best deal when you don't want any modding to happen.
How I clean the cartridge slot is take the board out of the console, turn it upside down and from underneath scrub it with a toothbrush (old one) and methylated spirits (rubbing alcohol I think it maybe in America). I haven't had any drama's doing it this way with all the consoles I have done, from Atari's to N64. One N64 was so disgusting it was like someone had attached a vaccum cleaner to the cart slot and used it to vaccum the floor.
Thanks for the advice guys:)
has anybody else had extreme trouble hooking genesis systems up to HDTV's?
I've tried a couple new systems now, including a nomad which I can see is playing the games correctly.
- on *most* games, I get about 5 seconds of 'no image' displayed on the screen, then a still image for half a second, and then back to 'no image'--cycle repeats.
- on phantasy star 4 (verified with two copies) I get 5 seconds of black on boot, when the sega logo disappears and whenever I change rooms. Comic-book style cutscenes are totally black.
- finally on shining force II, the only thing that's wrong is 5 seconds of black after the sega logo disappears.
I know this is a TV issue. Maybe some kind of video mode that's popular on genesis--interlaced or something. What I want to know is if modding for s-vid or rgb stand a chance of displaying, or if I should just give up and buy an old psone screen or something to stick on one of my systems.
That is an issue with your particular TV. I don't believe it will matter if it is RF or component, it will still have the same sync issues with 240p video because it doesn't really understand it.
Actually, for say, on my Samsung, remember it doesn't like 32X Component 240p, but it does like 32X Composite or RF just fine.
Some use a different scaler chip on NTSC/PAL inputs than the Component input, mainly because on Component, there's more scanrate posibilities, where on the NTSC/PAL ones, it's to be "expected" as to what it receives.
