You know, I think we might have simply been calling the same thing from different perspectives. I look at it this way: when sticking a CD into a tray, the label is always facing up, so I call it the top. The part without the label is facing down, so I call it the bottom. The laser beam is UNDER the CD and shining against what I call the bottom, so for the laser to read data, the reflective layer must be at least FACING the bottom of the disc. It's closer to the top on modern manufacturing techniques, but it's not the top. I think you're calling it the top because the layer is mechanically closer to the top due to the thick clear plastic that covers the bottom. I think of that plastic like a layer of paint: you wouldn't call the paint on a hull of a ship the bottom - the hull is, no matter how thick the paint is. So I guess it's just a matter of perspective.
