I have had a look inside my Mega CD, and all the "bad" caps are 10uf 16v smd's. I ordered replacements of evilBay.. here is my sad looking pcb.

on another note, the connecter board between the Megadrive and Mega CD appears to be significantly different than my PAL one..Including several surface mounted IC's and some additional wiring. Any reason why i cant replace my botched (previous owners bad solder attempts) NTSC/JP connecter board with a PAL one? Apart from the obvious additions of two wires that go to an extra PCB mounted upside down on the main board?

Sega CD drives check the region. An error message will appear when attached to incorrect consoles. You can use region switch, boot cartridge, BIOS replacement, etc.

Is it possible to replace a controller port on a model 1 HDG VA6? The asshole who sold me the console didn't check to see if any of the pins were bent, and I can't use controller port 1.

What type of AC adapter input jack does the Model 1 Genny use (measurements and all)?

On one of the Model 1 Genesis units that I have (a VA5 mobo), it only turns on if I plug in the AC adapter in a certain way (i.e., I had to jiggle the jack to get it to turn on). I can verify that the AC adapter isn't at fault after I took my Genesis to the local video game repair shop. According to them, it's more likely that it's the Genny's AC adapter input jack, because they plugged in one of their AC adapters, and it didn't turn on (no LED light).

model 1 uses a 1602 as far as i know.

The cheapest way is mod a generic part to fit. That port has so many uses it's cliche to even mention.

If you really need an authentic look for something you're not going to see anyway when a controller is inserted, might be trickier...

5.5 OD x 2.1 ID centre negative. Should be plenty on the bay. But first try and reflow the solder on the existing dc socket.

Hi,

I have a question regarding a sega cd model 1 from the pal region, which i hooked up to a model 1 megadrive (obviously also pal region).
The problem is when i power it on the lights in the front do nothing but the startup screen shows with the planets and the v1.00 but without sound and seems frozen when i hit the resetbutton it just goes black. I have also pushed every button on the controller but it also does nothing.
I have already opened it up cleaned every board and contact and i couldn't see any damage to the boards ore cables except for a little corrosion on the mainboard. I tested the cd-drive the lens can move and works, it can close when pullet out manually and turned on, i have also checked the fuse just to be thourogh and it was ok. i have tried putting a cd in manually but it still does nothing the cd doesn't even spin.
One more thing i noticed is that two of the pins from the connecter from the sega cd to the megadrive aren't connectet.

If you know anything that could help please tell me anything, i would also be very gratefull if someone could provide me with a circuit diagram.

I did mention that the AC adapter is still working; the problem lies with the adapter jack (the female) on the Genesis itself.

Alright then, different question: Would a 45w Desoldering iron be too high of wattage? If not, where could I get a desoldering iron of lower wattage? I've looked everywhere and the lowest I found was 45.

Also, what's the technical term for the port that the Genesis uses? There's about 5 other consoles that use the same port.

I think somebody needs to make the ultimate Sega CD repair guide. (model 2 AND model 1) that way instead of people constantly having to ask questions about them, they can just look at the guide. does anybody that has a lot of experience repairing Sega CD and technical know-how willing to write an article that has a list of all the common problems that both models have and how to fix them?

Here is quide:

1. Now power?
- replace the internal fuse
2. Still no power?
- replace atleast power area caps and probably while on to it replace all caps.
3. Audio problems?
- replace all caps
4. Cd will not spin?
- replace laser
5. Model 1 Lid will not open properly?
- replace belt or hole motor.

45w will do just fine. However, if you're getting one of those annoying plunger-style desoldering irons, be sure to request extra tips. Those things chip and crack very easily.

Are you serious? Look 2 posts up from your last post. OD 5.5mm x ID 2.1mm, type something along those lines in ebay and off you go. Or better yet try and reflow the solder as first port of call. I have also seen one that had a damaged trace on that little dc board, just linked it with a bit of wire to repair.
