is my genesis model worth modding? va0 with cxa1145 encoder. Apparently there will be a hissing sound after the audio mod? is it noticeable at all? should I replace the video encoder regardless?

Yes... I have a 30 day warranty so I figure if I'm going through the effort of modding I'd get the best revision I can.. but if the hiss noise is nothing to worry about (I don't hear it really) then I'd mod it unless the audio mod amplifies it somehow, or does the stock muffled audio drown it out?
If you mean with the hissing noise that white noise when white is on background, that cannot be undone as it is asic noise and is fault of sega's chip. How ever everything else is gone with CCAM mod for md2 but that's for someone who understands schematics and know how to solder them.
I built the CCAM I don't hear any hiss. Although to me the "best revision" is a va5 / 6 model 1. I like the power bass you get out of these systems. Probably any pre-va7 model 1 is the best. The cxa1145 you can get s-video. I strongly suggest doing what I do and not replacing the video encoder but instead just bypassing it. Still I think the best quality s-video comes from a s-video modded 32x which should work on any model 1 / 2. No matter what encoder / pcb combination you use there will always be interference in the s-video. I find that the s-video modded 32x produces the least amount of interference by far.
Sega 32 generates s-video from rgb wihtout subcarrier signal of cxa. If you want the best image the lift subcarrier pin 6 and enjoy your sega 32x picture quality. How ever I am going to introduce some day rgb encoder to yuv and s-video to replace cxa all together. This would then produce clean s-video wihtout jailbars. MY finnish mate lifted pin 6 and did get good rgb from KA. Wel would need to implement good circuit for image position fix as mega drives don't have rgb left sift circuitry at all.
I've heard that 32x games usually just use the sound chip on the genesis, is that true?
For music, yes. But for speech, the PWM is used.
Don't get rid of Va0. Get another crappy model if you need testing gear to perform mods to improve the console.
Is my sega megadrive dying?
I own a model 1 Pal sega megadrive that I bought on ebay.co.uk anyway I have a few problems with it:
sometimes the color pallete changes for a few seconds, for example, when using action replay 2 on it, the reds turn green for a few seconds before turning back to red.
The Master converter only works on a few games, though in this case, I have a NTSC Master Converter, Phantasy star runs fine on it, but R-type doesn't work at all (but r-type runs fine on my master system)
and finally: Sometimes the console just freezes and I have no choice but to press the reset switch
is it dying?
Do any of those cheap aftermarket powersupplys they sell on amazon and ebay work? I've heard reports of them frying consoles because they were unstable or something.
