So for the 32X S-Video mod, will I still be able to use composite and RGB if I perform it?
So for the 32X S-Video mod, will I still be able to use composite and RGB if I perform it?
shit. okay thanks
I didn't even think about that.
I just like having Composite open as an option, that's all.
I have a problem with my 32x. I have a Model 1 Genesis (with TMSS screen and Exp. port on back, so either a VA5,6, or 6.8), 2 difference 32x units (one is model 8000 the other 8000a), and a Model 2 Sega CD. I just got a Model 2 SCART cable (with raw sync) and the CVS287 RGB to YUV converter to use with the 32x.
The problem is every time I have my 32x hooked up the screen is all wavy and wobbley. This happens with Genesis games and 32x games (the 32x games display correctly). When I take the 32x out and play the Genesis games the picture is perfect (in RGB and composite). The problem is present on several different Genesis consoles (a VA2, a VA7 and the one I'm using now) and both versions of the 32x I own.
I am the original owner of one of the 32x units and it's worked fine in the past (via RF and composite video).
I'm using all the original power adapters for all the units and I've made certain it's not a grounding problem. I've also reseated the ribbons in both 32x units. Could this be a problem with the 32x patch cable? The other problem could be with the SCART cable. I see they (retro_console_accessories on eBay) also sell a version with a Boosted Sync. These are the only things I don't have extras of to test.
I've been going crazy the past few weeks trying to figure this out. Any help would be appreciated!
Alrighty, I have a Japanese Mega Drive and I'm looking to play Genesis games on it. I don't want to have to mod just yet, instead I'm looking at the two cheat cartridges, the Datel Action Replay and the Galoob Game Genie.
What I want a comprehensive answer on is:
a) Do either of these products simply plug in to my Japanese console and give me a boot menu with region select/detect or a switch or
something on the cart? Or is it done by entering fiddly codes?
b) Are the carts a one size fits all type thing or were there ones released in Japan, specifically to fit the native console? In other words if I was to buy this UK Pro Action Replay cart and try to use it in my NTSCJ MD would it serve my purposes?
Thanks in advance guys. I gotta start getting some US stuff as assembling a Japanese MD collection is a little on the expensive side and I wanna play Mega Turrican, and an affordable version of Comix Zone!
If you could post some nice photos of both sides of its two PCBs, that would be much appreciated.
Yes, this is the problem.
A Pro Action Replay 2 does have a low-functioning region switching feature, while a Game Genie does not. You will need to enter codes regardless of which device you buy.
Japanese cartridges are larger than the western type. If your console has a cartridge lock, be sure to remove it so it can accommodate non-Asian cartridges.
Action Replay has a notch for Japanese consoles. Game Genie does not.
I haven't been able to confirm if Action Replay released within Japan itself for the Mega Drive.
I've been trying to remove the RF module from my Model 1 Genesis, but have had no luck. How do I do this?
Ok, so the wobbly screen problem has vanished. But I'm still getting occasional horizontal lines of interference every now and then. Sometimes it's real bad and covers the whole screen, other times it's only by the top of the screen and sometimes it's completely gone!
I noticed if I turn off the console, remove and put the cart back in the problem will go away. I thought it might be isolated to either the 32x or the Genesis but I keep getting the problem on various combinations of different models. I finally did a test using just the Sega CD with Ecco and Night Trap (Sega CD-32X version) and the problem was there too (it went away after a few reboots).
Here's something that'll always create the problem even when the game starts out perfectly: in Sonic 2 on the first level, everything looks perfect until I get 50 rings and enter the bonus stage. That's when I'll get the horizontal lines on the screen. Could it be because the bonus level is running at a different resolution than the regular levels (notice how there's a blue border around the screen in normal levels and no borders in the bonus levels)?
I've gotten a replacement 32x patch cable off eBay and it yields the same problems. I have another SCART cable coming to me (this one with the boosted sync designed for the 32x and CDX).
So basically it's come down to these things to check out: My TV, the SCART cable, or the SCART to Component Video converter. Any ideas?
I'll try to get pictures of the 2 32x units as well as the problem I'm having. I'm not sure if I'm too new to post pictures or not.
Probably the easiest method would be to use a heat gun just make sure that you only heat the solder side and don't flip over the pcb while heating / removing the unit. Also make sure there's no surface mount components near the heated area on the solder side otherwise the heatgun would blow them off. The backup technique is to use a desoldering iron.
I made some videos and what's possibly been causing my problems:

They're all short. The longest is 33 seconds.
EDIT:
The new SCART cable with boosted sync has correct all my problems! Thank you guys for all your help!
My name is Chris from Northern NJ and this Xmas i am purchasing a Genesis for myself to revisit some great memories as well as a system for my nephew to grow up on that isn't "COD/GTA" based violence.. I've read "Good & Bad Genesis" thread now heres my question and any input/knowledge/experience is appreciated.
Will i have to get an old school tv? (i have an LCD&LED) Is HD Model 1 my sure fire? TMSS or Non-TMSS (simply a startup screen?)? If i find a Gen with CD attached should i aim at getting that instead? I want to pick a system that can take a daily beating but would also like to expand in the future&mod a bit! I know which systems have which flaws thanks to the "good/bad genesis thread" but picking one out is still tough!
