You should only need an old school tv for light guns. Those use properties unique to CRT.
Genesis will play on LCDs enough to get started. But may not look very pretty. There's high end upgrade options like video processors to turn its RGB into forms US TVs understand.

TMSS isn't very important. It blocks a few of the earliest Genesis games. Also causes Genesis and 32X mode to display a startup screen (SMS or CD games don't show it).

CD attached can be useful. Enables music playback and more games. Model 2 CD unit is suggested for new users. Cheaper, more reliable, easier to fix... Just be aware of its wider footprint due to the drive's location.

Hi there, I recently brought a USA genesis 32x for my Pal Megadrive II , The guy selling it said its region free, but after reading abit on the net it seems it may have problems, If i try to play a pal 32x game on NTSC 32x + pal console will it work? (all unmodded)

someone was saying
"a PAL 32X can only overlay on a 240 pixel high image, where an NTSC 32X can only overlay on a 224 pixel image..

going from one to the other will cause incorrect placement of objects"

Is that going to be a problem? Or will i need to mod the 32x to play Pal games?

One last question was If i mod my megadrive to 60hz and run NTSC 32x with NTSC games will it have color output on Pal tv just with composite cable, or do you really need s-video

Hey Bro!

You will need it modded to play PAL games. There a few region free games (Mortal Kombat, Shadow Squadron off the top of my head). The consoles have to match (again off the top of my head) though (they have to match in frequency ie 50-50Hz or 60-60Hz). When you mod the 32X, you will also need to change the oscillator to 4.433619Mhz so the image will be in colour (PAL50 and PAL60). If you play the games through the 32X there will be no need to add the oscillator to the Mega Drive itself. You may as well mod the MD and 32X both via simple switches to make it region free as American 32X games are cheaper.

If you mod the 32X further for S-video (DogP and Drakon sorted this out) you will still need to swap out the oscillator. If however you use RGB, or for us Southern Hemisphere people use RGB to Component converter (bloody good way) you will not need to worry about the oscillator.

Thanks for info, Im planning on getting a everdrive cart, So if i have Pal megadrive modded to 60hz + gen 32x+ everdrive i can run all USA games in color outputting thru 32x composite?

I wont have to mod the 32x at all correct?

Sorry its a lil confusing to me , Link to guide for 50/60hz switch for Megadrive II pal would be great also

Thank you for responding! I am deciding to purchase an HD Model 1 for now. There are countless listings on ebay & craigslist for these bundled usually with two controllers and five or six games.

If your TV can support NTSC then yes that should be fine.

With the console in USA state it will play in colour on my 17yr old 34cm TV with the TV colour select on "Auto", if I switch the MD to PAL I have to force the TV to NTSC 3.358 to be in colour, left on AUTO is B/W. So you should be fine.

Wicked, thanks alot for the info/links,Seems like it may be worth keeping then for everdrive ,just gotta mod my megadrive II with 50/60hz switch, hope it isnt to hard im pretty crap with soldier

Hey guys/girls,

I have a six button arcade stick (official) that has a problem with the joystick movement (up,down,left,right). I took the controller apart and tested various things and found that the small black contacts for the joystick basically don't work. I cleaned them with alcohol and retested and nothing. Using the larger A,B,C,X,Y,Z rubber contacts seemed to work just fine. I could move around without issue.

Question is does anyone know where to get these rubber contact pads to replace these crappy ones? I looked everywhere and I'd prefer not to buy another one on fleabay for like $30 for a presumably cheap part if I can help it.

Yeah everdrive cannot in any way change the console's region. The cart is merely region free itself, and can run most games patched as region free.
Being able to switch hz and/or language still has uses (like how some megadrive games contain english and japanese modes).

Correct region stuff is all determined by the console. So load pal roms on your everdrive and all should be good. I still have to sometimes switch my genesis between USA / JPN with the region switch I installed depending if the rom I'm playing is in usa or japan region. If you have the proper switches installed on your console should be able to load roms from any region as far as I know.

I have a genesis model 1 that I pulled out of the closet and trying to get started again but I keep getting a rolling screen with thick black and grey lines. I am using the original RF box and power supply cord. This issue occurred when I tried to start it up out of the closet a few days ago and I have since tried cleaning the cartridge with isopropyl and the slot with fine sandpaper but the issue is still occurring. I have an NES that I started up and since that was working fine I tried the NES RF box on the sega but the issue remained. The games are loaded and starting up behind the rolling pic and lines. Any suggestions on the best way to resolve this issue? All help is greatly appreciated.

Pretty much. It's impractical to go through the library, writing speed optimization or language select patches for every game.
