If, when you turn on the power you immediately get an error screen, that means your Genesis and Sega CD are from different regions than each other. If it goes to the CD control panel, then the hardware is fine. It's the games that are the wrong region. If you have a Genesis and Sega CD and any of your games say "Mega CD" on them, then they are the wrong region. If you're burning CD-Rs, you're burning images from the wrong region.
At least that's the way it is with the model 1 Genesis and Sega CD. With model 2, I have no friggin' clue.
My story of thor needs a back up battery any ideas how to fix this?
It's a Genesis(not a Mega Drive) and the Sega
CD load screen comes up, and the Genesis games work.
The Sega CD front screen says "Checking Disc," and then goes to the audio CD interface, which says "No Disc."
The games say they are for NTSC TVs on the back of them, so I assume both consoles are region 1. Right? Or is there another possible explanation?
But if it is a regional encoding problem is there any type of modification to the console that will allow me to play games from other regions?

So here i go.
I recently bought Ground Zero Texas (cd) and Night trap (cd 32x) and i'm having problems with the cursor on both not working properly.
the sega cd is hooked up to a model 2.
so on both these games the cursor will either go just left to right, and if you swtich controller ports up and down.
i did try ground zero with hooking up my cd to a model 1 genesis and it works great. i would have tried night trap too but i don't have the proper cables for the 32x to be hooed up to the model 1.
THEN! i borrowed another model 2 from a friend of mine. cursor works great but the picture is all messed up.
if i could mash the 2 together it would be perfect.
any other cd game works great, but the 2 i kind of wanted to play of course doesn't want to work properly.
Everything has been cleaned as well to the best of my ability.
any ideas or suggestions?
any way to some how bastardize a ps/2 compatible or other DIN cable to fit a model 1 gen to a 32x?
My Brother-in-law gave me a SegaCD and Genesis model 1 that wasn't working. I cleaned the contacts on the Gen side and got it working. I played Star Wars for about 3 minutes before it locked up and low when it boots the startup screen logo is corrupt/scrambled. I've tried re-cleaning the contacts with both an eraser and alcohol. I tried my Gen 2 on it with the same result. I took the Sega CD apart to verify the internal ribbon cables were secure and cleaned the connector on the inside. Has anyone seen this? When you press start with a game in it just seems to lock up. When you press reset it will eject and go back to the main screen. Attached is a screenshot. The sega logo animation is running but just corrupt.

Both Gen's will play carts just fine. Any help would be great. I do have some soldering skills and can poke around with a meter if I need it. I just hope someone has some ideas to try. Are dried out capacitors common or dry solder points and would they cause this?

OK, so I got a CIB Sega CD RAM cart for free from my local used computer store (that sells used games) when the owner was cleaning out the stuff "he didn't want to sell." Well, low and behold its worth a decent amount of money. Knowing this, I managed to get a deal with a user on another forum (trustworthy, hes a mod) for Final Fantasy VII and Shenmue in exchange for the CIB Sega CD RAM cart and Baby Boomer for NES (a somewhat rare game) and $20. It's a great deal considering I originally only paid about $5-6 for baby boomer and the RAM cart was free, so its like getting FF VII and Shenmue for $26 shipped, a deal if I've ever seen one.
Here's the beef:
I don't own a Sega CD, and I'm not sure if I ever will (sonic CD and mega race seem to be the only games that appeal to me at this point, plus since emulators offer faster load times, its becoming less and less appealing), so I have no use for the RAM cart anytime soon, especially a CIB one (not to mention with Sega CDs going for $70+). However, I heard that Sega CD internal memory save batteries often go bad and are next to impossible to replace. Is this true? or is this just a myth from people that don't know WTF they're talking about? Also, are there any games that REQUIRE the RAM cart besides RPGs? I'm not a huge fan of RPGs, the only ones I've ever really played are the Square greats like FFIV, VI, VII, and VIII and Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, so I don't care about 2 or 3 obscure Sega CD RPGs.
bottom line: Do sega CD save batteries often go bad? how hard are they to change? is it really necessary for most games? a list of games that really necessitate saving would be nice.
P.S. Anyone else have a comment on the deal? think I'm getting a pretty good deal or is this dude having his way with me? I verified the worth of baby boomer and the RAM cart to be about $20 and $40 respectively, so that plus $20 for FFVII (usually worth about $50-$60 for a black label for a patient ebayer) and Shenmue (worth about $15) with shipping seems like a fair trade.

ahh Good old Goodwill.... I just got a MINT NES with controller, hookups and SMB for 9.99! and I mean MINT everything even the controller doesn't look like it's ever been used and it works with games like first try! Beats the hell out of pawn shops they all want like $60 for an NES these days.

How common is it with connector problems?
does anyone know how to use the Datel Action Replay? I got it SUPER cheap in a mislabeled lot on eBay and if I understand correctly it should have a save state feature. How on earth do you do this? I don't have instructions and I can't find a damn thing ANYWHERE online. Please someone enlighten me because there are a bunch of long Genesis games I would like to use this for.

The change doesn't happen instantly. You have to wait for the forum to update the usergroups. I have no clue how often it is set to do that. The minimum is every hour. Could be once a day or once a year. I don't know.

I'm not new to the Genesis thanks to emulation, but I am new to the actual hardware, so I have a question.
I just got a Genesis 2 from a friend of mine for free last week. (not too bad of a deal huh?) However, she only had an RF cable, which I hate, as I can't get behind my huge CRT TV I use for video games to hook it up without a lot of trouble... so I've been playing it via RF on a midget TV. It sucks to do that.
So anyway I was checking out a site that had some Genesis stuff (semi-dodgy place, but I've bought SNES stuff from them before and had no trouble) and they had a Genesis 2 AV/Composite cable. I bought that, a 6-button pad, and a copy of Virtua Racing.
The stuff arrived today, and while the controller and game work fantastically, the AV cable is perplexing me.
First I was confused because it only had 3 pins while my RF cable has 9, but then I did my research through this site and that should be no problem.
The real problem is that it doesn't seem to fit in the back of the Genesis! I put it in correctly as the arrow on top of it showed and it would not go in. I also tried some other angles and no luck.
The pins on it don't appear to be bent at all, however, I noticed that they are slightly rectangular whereas the pins on the RF cable are closer to a square. Is that why it doesn't fit, and if so, why the heck are the pins shaped like that? Can I make this cable fit or have I just lost $7?

the one on the left is model 2.And the other one looks like a model 1 cable to me.In other words it won't fit.
be sure you got the right cable for the right model.
I edited the post a while ago... as I said I managed to get it to fit. And it works great.
So no problems, just me not trying hard enough at first.
I just got a master system converter V2. When I try a game it comes up black & white and occasionally jumps to colour. I've cleaned the connector on the master system cart and the mega drive connector on the converter but it doesn’t help. Can anyone help me out?
It shouldn't be a problem with the converter if the actual game plugged into it plays. All the converter does is change the cartridge connector pins around. Its the Megadrive console that does all the work of the video output, so if your getting a black and white image its down to the console.
The console may be faulty if megadrive games play fine, but if they also have the same issue then look at the video output connector and cable that goes to the TV.
I tried it on my two other version two mega drives and it works on one. Thanks.

I just bought a Sega Genesis (model 1) from eBay, and I am having problems. the system came with sonic spinball and turns on just fine and shows the licensing screen, but after that there is just a black screen. Any suggestions?

That didn't seem to do the trick. Could the cartridge be bad?
could be, but usualy they show red screen then.... I got black screens when I was building my flashcart and it had contact issues...
EDIT : Cleaning = opening up the cart and use of pencil eraser, cotton sticks and alcohol
I never have had red always black. My Altered Beast and Bomberman died that way. :(
TmEE, Any way to add the "high definition graphics and stereo sound" text to a MD1 without it, add the two ports from the model 1 and give it the clearer sound? Basically making it into an early model 1 because I am sentimentally attached to my md (model 1B) and don't want to swap for an older model.
There is probably some way to get the text on it, but I have no idea how you'd achive it... as for sound, I need a with-TMSS MD1 to do some comparsions with my non-TMSS MD1 to see why later MD1s have shittier sound.
they aren't dead. Some games are just stubborn like that. Unless you dropped them in a tub of water and let it corrode or something they should still work. I've had about 5 used Genesis games that gave me nothing or just the "Sega" boot screen. After cleaning them a couple more times, carefully putting them in the slot perfectly straight and pushing down firmly to ensure the pins are making contact, and waiting about 2 seconds to allow for any movement (i.e. by nature the pins have a tiny bit of spring and the cartridge moving back and forth could break the connection) and powering on I got them to work. I have yet to encounter a dead Genesis game.Quote:

On the topic of dead carts: Two weeks ago I bought Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and didn't get to look at the cart until I brought it home, and the connector at the bottom was horribly dirty. I alcohol'd it, and got most of it out, so that it will at least be identified as a good cart by the TMSS. However, the game won't load, and I'm pretty sure it's because of the poor condition of the cart. that stuff is rust, the sooner you get rid of it the better.... if you can, scrape it off with some flathead screwdriver, or MAYBE use very fine sandpaper
Well, that did nothing... I'm guessing the cart is actually dead.
there's a chance that it has rusted through the copper... and there's no real fix for it... soldering and opening up the cart is required in all cases.
