If the power adapter doesn't work, then the opamp in the genesis is most likely fried..
i've never run across this before, but it's possible.

Is there a way I could tell without using a new adaptor? I would try another one, I just don't have one at the ready. I'm beginning to wonder if I should just pick up a model 1 Genesis.
got a multimeter?
I had a feeling you'd say that..... No, I don't. I guess I should get a new adaptor, do you think that picking up a model 1 genesis is worth it, I mean would you recommend it over a model 2. Oh and thanks man, you're really helping me. I do apreciate it.
i prefer the model 1, as they have better sound quality, but for stereo sound, you have to get audio from the headphone jack, as the rear is the same jack as the MasterSystem, and that was mono..
Well I put a bid on a new adaptor on ebay. I hope that is all I need, thanks man.
After I play my Genesis(model 1) for a little bit I can sometimes feel a bit of heat coming from the area right above the volume control, to the left of the cart slot. Is this normal? It should be noted that the room I am playing in does not have air conditioning and is pretty hot at this time of year.
Just wondering if this is normal or anything to worry about.
it's the voltage regulator heat syncs, it's normal.
Thanks!
I'm requesting the aid of the Evil Dragon. Oh Sega CD guru, can you help me. I seem to be having the oh so common blown fuse problem with my sega cd. I have everything hooked up correctly and i'm getting to response from the sega cd unit at all. I cracked her open with the intention of replacing the fuse but when i opened it up, the insides were slightly different than they are on the guide that you gave the link to before. Do you know where i'd find the fuse? Let me know if you can help me! Thanks!
Leezus
which Sega CD? Some use surface mounts instead, and those are very hard to fix... I know how, got one, but I need to know your model first..Quote:

yes, it does.. the fuse is on the bottom, i think it's labled "F1" and likes like a big white resistor (surface mount)
Maybe i'm dumb but i'm looking all over and i can't seem to find it... Could you point out a "landmark" on the board that it's close to? Thanks!
OH, i believe i found it. F301? Underneath the board? Ahh.... so how do you suggest i go about rigging this up?
i don't know if that's it..
can you take a picture? im not at my SCD2 r2 board right now (it's 15 miles away)
I hope you can make out what's going on in the pic. I outlined the resistor that i was talking about...
i do believe that's it..
if you have a multimeter, check the continuity..
evildragon you seem to be the authority in these parts on the Sega CD, how much have you seen the unit going for:
a) In stores?
and
b) On auction sites?
Your input would be appreciated
I do not possess a multimeter. Is there any other way to check?
I'm not too sure on price, but for in store like gamestop, if they had one, it probably would go for 60 dollars.Quote:

There's not really any other way.. To even fix it however, you will need a soldering iron, and know how to solder.Quote:

Hey there, i used a continuity tester and the circuit seems open. What kind of fuse does this bad boy take?
no clue, i'm going to take a long shot and say over 800ma, but under 2amp..
Greetings-
I recently purchased a 'make an offer' deal on a Sega lot. The Sega CD appears to have some issues (clues me in why it wasn't priced). When I turn it on it makes a grinding sound.
After dismantling I narrowed it down to the motor is stripping the gears. I am guessing it thinks the laser needs to return to the beginning at powerup but its confused and its forcing the laser to back making the gears grind.
I thought maybe it was out of line and needed adjusted. Sometimes it works but most of the time it doesn't. It will still play the discs its just confused and it just doesn't seem to be good on the motor. (laughs)
Is this shot or does it need re-aligned?
Thanks!
Erik
It would help to know which model Sega CD this is, a model 1 or 2? Mechanically they are different.
If a model 2, when the laser returns to it's initial position (inner part of CD), it hits a little "switch", to tell the controller that it reached it's position. Makes sure this switch isn't worn down or dirty.
Greetings-
Its the Model 2 version - I see the switch - In order to get to it to get a closer look I need to remove the spindle the cd sets on.
How does this come off?
Thanks!
Erik
no, you don't need to remove the spindle, you can easily access it via the side of the laser assembly...
The switch looks like two poles protected by a clear plastic, just makes sure when the lid switch is closed that this retracts, and as soon as the laser hits it, it stops..
I had that problem on my original sega cd 2. the original switch just wouldnt work reliably after trying to clean it. I ended up adding a cherry microswitch in there and adjusted the actuator to work as the limit switch. I think its buried in storage but I could dig it out if anyone wants to see a pic of the repair.
DO NOT USE the sega cd till u get this fixed! it will do permanent damage to the gear if u do.
Hi, I wish to post a new thread about a Megadrive/Genesis hookup technical problem... but the Forum here won't let me post a new thread? I signed up last week....
I would post my Megadrive/Genesis problem in this thread but it's rather long. :(
Can anyone help please? Thanks.
P.S. My apologies.... I've just realised I posted this in the SEGA CD thread, not MD/GENESIS thread... Sorry. :bang:
You can't post new threads until you've made nearly a dozen posts and proven you are not a spammer. Go ahead and post your technical issue in the Genesis/MD thread. Don't worry about it being too long.
Hi,
I've currently got my PC and Playstation 2 hooked up to my computer monitor, an Advent 17E-TV. The monitor has a "TV Box" screwed onto the back of it, enabling the plugging in of phono leads and it also has a regular TV Ariel socket ('RF') on the back.
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...m33/Advent.jpg
The PS2 plugs into the x3 phono sockets on the back of the monitor (Red/Yellow/White sockets), while the PC goes through the regular VGA plug.
I now wish to plug in my SEGA Megadrive II (2) to the same monitor. My problem though is getting the Megadrive picture to appear on the monitor.
I've plugged the regular Megadrive RF Ariel lead into the monitor's Ariel socket and switched to the TV channels to manually tune in the Megadrive picture. I can certainly find it, but it is unstable: It is frozen on one game screen (or 'frame'?). If you change channels on the monitor and then come back to the Megadrive channel, the picture is still frozen, but it has advanced to a newer picture/scene. It should be noted that the sound is absolutely ok, never stops/freezes and continues on regardless of what the picture is showing.
Thus it seems as if the monitor can't display the Megadrive picture 'live' when using the RF Ariel input.
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m...3/RFleadBW.jpg
So I got hold of a Megadrive II AV lead which has the three Yellow/Red/White phono plugs on the end. This simply plugs into the back of the Megadrive and into the monitor's x3 phono sockets. However, this time the 'Video' picture (the monitor's AV Source channel, which the monitor uses to receive the x3 phono input) remains blank. When the Megadrive is turned on, the Video picture flicks off and on, as if it's acknowledging the input signal, but with the Megadrive the Video picture simply goes back to being the 'blank' video screen. In contrast, the PS2 phono Video input also prompts this intial 'flick' of the Video channel, but then it displays the PS2 loading screen normally.

So does anyone have successful experience of hooking up their Megadrive through an RF Ariel socket or with an AV Phono lead?
I suspect the problem may be something to do with the 'Frequency' of the monitor. At the start of various PS2 games, the player is asked whether they wish to play the game in 50mHz or 60mHz. Both of these game modes work on my Advent monitor.
However, in the TV Box's (on the back of the monitor, into which the Megadrive AV/RF lead plugs) own Menu it gives the option to switch the TV Box's Frequency between 60mHz and 75mHz. I wonder if the Megadrive uses 50mHz and this is not 'supported' by the Advent TV Box, since it only offers the option of switching between 60mHz and 75mHz? On the other hand, PS2 games work fine when the game is selected as 50mHz and the monitor's TV Box is set to 60mHz. For all I know - it may not even be an issue about frequency's?
So does anyone have any ideas? Help? :help:
Thanks.

P.S. I can post up some pics of actual screen shots to help explain further?....
Oh crap, I know the "scaler" in that thing, it HATES 240p. Anything 240p causes it to "freeze".
Yeah, basically the Genesis outputs a literal 240 horizontal lines of resolution, and the monitor probably sees that at an "illegal" form of video and doesn't know how to react to it. It needs to see the flag telling it to advance to the next field (odd or even) and there isn't a flag in a 240p signal telling it to do so. I bet Sonic 2's two player mode would work on it, and so would Ys 3 if you could get to the menu and tell it to switch to INT MODE, but that's it.
that INT mode never actually did 480i on my system.
Sonic 2 split screen will infact work
The INT mode does 480i on my system... granted it is just field-doubled 240p.
mine wouldn't.. weird. i'll need to check again, maybe i burned a bad dump.
I am using a real cartridge.
Hi "Joe Redifer" and "evildragon"; I assume you're both responding to my post?
Thank you for your responses. OK, you're both going to have to slow down please, because while I'm technology-minded, I've never fiddled with the Genesis/TVs/Frequency's/etc so please bear with me.
"evildragon"; When you say "I know the "scaler" in that thing, it HATES 240p. Anything 240p causes it to "freeze"."... is the 'scaler' you refer to in the Advent TV Box (on the back of the monitor) or in the monitor itself?
(It would certainly explain the 'freezing' of just the Megadrive/Genesis picture and no other input device...)
"Joe Redifer", What is "Ys 3"?
And to you both (and anyone):
What is "240p"?
What is "480i"?
And another query: If I ran the Megadrive/Genesis through a Video player (via RF/Ariel in) and then into the PC Monitor's TV Box (via Video out/TV Box AV in), do you think this would accomodate the Genesis/Megadrive signal on the screen?
(I would *OF COURSE* test this out instead of lazily asking (!!), but I don't have a Video player in the house at the moment...)
Thanks for your help guys. :)
I can't answer any of your other questions because I'm not too technical savvy, but I think the 'Ys 3' you're asking about is Ys III: Wanderers from Ys, an RPG for the Genny.
