The scaler is the TV box.. It takes the video signal, deinterlaces, upscales it to pixel native of LCD, then shoves it into the LCDs buffer circuitry.
Thing is, those boxes, don't know how to handle a video signal that's already non-interlaced, so it locks on the first "field" (technically it's a frame--in the case of the genesis)

OK, so to move forward with this:
Do you know of a suitable TV Box (or equivalent gadget?) that would allow me to plug the Genesis (with either a Megadrive/Genesis II RF Ariel lead, or an AV lead - I obviously have both) into a PC monitor?
What gadgets/devices have other people used to hook their Megadrives/Genesis' to their PC monitors?
The point of this exercise is to have my Megadrive II as a usable part of my game desk setup. I wish to use the actual console and have absolutely no interest in emulators.

A DVD recorder might work. Plug the Genesis into that, and the output from the deck may be interlaced since DVD cannot handle 240p. Then again you may not see any signal at all. I have no idea if the record mode must be entered into or not to get the video lop-through. They probably don't work as well as VCRs. However VCRs will preserve the signal, and it will still be 240p at output.

Hey.
I just have a problem with a Justifier Lightgun. It isn't showing any signs of working when I plug it in. I opened it up to have a look (if you like I can get some photos) and I couldn't see anything obvious. Are there any common problems that I should know about? It is pretty old and isn't looking in the best condition anyway, but I thought I would try.
Also there is socket that looks to be for a phone at the butt of the gun. What is it for?

It won't work unless you use it for Snatcher or those Lethal Enforcers games.
I was using it for Lethal Enforcers and it wouldn't work.

Nope. Just a widescreen CRT. The best connection I have is SCART but I'm using AV for the Mega CD.
widescreen CRT, I don't think any 480i/240p set was made widescreen.
What's the make and model?
Try it on a regular CRT. Bet it works.

I just found my Genny (model 1) downstairs in a drawer and its pretty dusty so I open it cleaned it But I'm missing the RF switch just wanted to know if there is any other way to try to see if it works?
none that will actually show picture on the TV. if the red light turns on with a game in it, it should be fine.
Just because the LCD lights up doesn't mean the console is actually in a working condition, though most of the time that is the case, but not always, there could be other troubles.
Another way of telling if it works without a picture, is sticking a line lead into the phones jack which is connected to some speakers. If there's sound from the game cartridge you have in, the Genesis is most probably fine.. That's assuming you have some cartridges to try.

I just bought a X'eye from ebay. At first at had the disc door open problem. But with a little more pressure on the button inside the tray, I was able to get it to read discs.
Thing is, it reads the CDG discs it came with , but not actual Sega CD games. What's going on?
Ouch, one of my Sega CD 2's do this also. The actual problem isn't exactly known, but I do know that it's between the CD-controller and the laser itself.

You should have seen how this thing was packaged. He threw all the stuff into a box with no packaging material.
If it just gets stuck at "Reading Disc", but can play music CDs and CD+Gs, then yea, you'd have to return it.
If however, it runs the game CD and brings you to a CD player interface, that means wrong region.

Hi guys,
I have a 32x which was working fine until this year - I just started using it again after it spent an extended period packed up after a move.
Genesis games play fine through it, but there's a bizarre problem with 32x games. Certain screens and backgrounds will display, and others will not. There is sound at all times. For example, in Mortal Kombat II, the company screens load, the character demo screens remain black, but then the title/options screen loads fine. The character select screen is black, but plays sounds and allows you to select a character (albeit blindly). The game starts, and shows only the level background with no fighters, but they make sounds and respond to the controllers - they're just not visible.
Similar scenario with Virtua Racing.
Anyone seen this before? I'm assuming it's the unit and not the games, since it does siimilar things to both games. Is there a fix, or is it time to pick up a new unit on Ebay?

Sounds like you hooked the video up to the Genesis instead of the 32X. The 32X must have wires connected to it 'n shit.

He said it spent an extended period of time packed away. And it was probably a long time before that when it was originally attached to his Genesis. It could have sat on his Genesis a looong time and worked fine and he could have forgotten how to hook it up before it was even taken apart. Or maybe is dad hooked it up for him originally, and maybe his dad is dead now.

You could try and take it apart and reseat those two white ribbons, but they are hard to get. There's a web link somewhere that helps guide you through this.

A guide is unnecessary. Just remove all of the screws. Open 'er up. Remove the screws which secure the metal shielding. The white ribbon cables are easily seen. They may have metal slidey things on them. Make sure both of those cables are firmly seated on both ends. Reassemble, reconnect to the Genesis (properly this time), and enjoy Golf Magazine Presents 36 Great Holes Starring Fred Couples in all of its amazing glory!

kind of off topic from the fixing the 32X thing, but is 36 holes any good? Its on sale for a few bucks at the game store i usually drop a few bucks at and i was thinking about whether it was worth it or not.
It's alright if you like golf games. It doesn't quite play as well as PGA Golf or Arnold Palmer on the Genesis, but it looks a bit better. Slow redraws.

Dude, my problem is this: I bought Forgotten Worlds, the US version, and it comes on like its gonna play, the intro is there, can go to options menu etc, but when I hit game start it goes to this weird cut seen that seems like it might be from the middle of the game where the dudes are talking and then a giant scarab looking dude pops up for a second, the screen flashes and it says game over. No Gameplay, just right to the game over screen! I cleaned it and kept trying but same result every time. I figured I got a bad cart so I bought another and the exact same thing happens!! Am I crazy? I don't want a third copy of it. I'm playing it on a 32x equipped model one genesis. Anybody know anything about this? Maybe I'm just an idiot or something but its driving me crazy!
Sorry, just noticed this is for 32x help.. But while im at it I got a Pro Action Replay, I think the first one, not the plus version with the trainer, an I can't get it to behave! It came with case but no instructions and it seems completely crazy. Theres a switch on the side I can't figure out, and I can't even get to a code screen! Maybe it doesn't like my 32x!! A lot of people don't for some reason :)
First of all, both of those posts where in the wrong thread as neither even come close to having anything to do with 32X trouble. If you thought the 32X could be causing thing, you would have tried removing the 32X to see if the problem persists, right?
Secondly, try holding down the MODE button on your controller as you power on the Genesis. Once it is powered on, let go of the MODE button. Your Genesis now thinks it is a 3 button controller instead of a 6 button. Now try your game.
