I think it's a steal. I got the Uncharted 3 version for 269 or something like that.If you're not into downloadable titles like me, the 12 gb one is the way to go
Problem with the PS3 is alot of the big-name games require a HDD to install on; Metal Gear Solid 4 for example uses something like 55 gb on it's Blu Ray disc, so you need 55 (ish) gb of harddrive space just to play the game. 12gb is not enough if you're serious about gaming on the platform.
The 360 has been a $200 system for years, this is very late.
DCU which is f2p has a massive 20GB file too.
Ehhh... I'm still gonna pass on ever owning a PS3.
It's an expensive Blu-Ray player.
I have 250 Gig HDD in my PS3 and it's nearly filled up. I really don't have a lot of media saved on the HDD and only about 30 or so games that I've played on the console. It just eats up HDD space, for some odd reason, yet my 120 Gig HDD in my 360 Elite has about as much space left, even with more DLC than what I've purchased for the PS3.
MGS4 install data takes about 4GB on the hard drive, not 55GB. If the drive is still user replaceable with standard 2.5" SATA drives, then one could potentially have 1TB PS3 for less than $300.
Also I didn't even know this existed until I saw it at Wal-Mart today.
Most games with a mandatory install stay well under 5 GB for their installation data. I think that was also a hard limit set by Sony which was broken only for a few very exceptional cases. Gran Turismo 5 comes to mind, as well as MGS4 when you do a full install (possible since the 25th Anniversary patch last year). Both games top out at about 10 GB.
But The Jackal's point remains valid. If you want to be able to play more than just a few AAA-games at the same time, that 12 GB flash drive is not going to be enough and you will have to upgrade the PS3 with a hard drive. Which also requires the purchase of a hard drive bracket at about $15. All in all, I'm not so sure if that low cost PS3 is really such a good deal.
The HDD is pathetic, but if you were planning on installing a new hard drive yourself it's a pretty good way to go, you could put the extra 50 bucks towards a 500gb or 1tb drive instead. I wouldn't use it with the 12 though, you'd run out pretty quickly.
That's what I heard from a few sites in the past; that the game requires a full install for it to be played. I made a mistake, I put my hands up, I'm sorry, but my point still stands - most games use up alot of space (not 55 gb each, granted, but 2-6 still adds up quickly), so that 12gb will go nowhere real fast.
But as Devil N and a few others pointed out, you can just buy a HDD and pop it in for cheap, so it's still a good deal.
I love the $200 price point, but hate the 12gb HD space, which seems meant for the gamer that NEVER DLs anything. If you plan to get PS+, getting this model doesnt make much sense. I just DLed MGS 2&3 HD and Silent Hill: Downpour (in succession) on Xbox Live, and that collectively took up about 14gb of space.
