Hahaha, man, when I was a kid I wanted that Mega Man 3 LCD game so badly..

I decided to go dig up the ol' LCD games in storage and give them a quick go. I gave ol' Space Harrier II a go and made it up to about level 7, farther than I ever remember making it when I was but a wee lad. While the game is simplistic shite requiring only that you jump right and left in mid air while hammering the fire button, it at least resembles the gameplay of its father a hell of a better than Sonic 3 LCD, the next in line. Before I was fortunate enough to play Sonic 3 on Genesis, there were the dark ages of Sonic 3 LCD.. I genuinely cannot understand how I ever could have enjoyed this. All you do is keep jamming right on the d-pad to advance the stage and periodically jump to attack enemies/collect some random box item that appears, eventually fighting a floating Robotnik at the end of the level by jamming right on the d-pad and pressing jump. The most entertaining part of this Sonic 3 LCD experience was prying open the battery compartment to find that the batteries had exploded years ago and congealed into a toxic dust.

The TurboGrafx-16 manual for Space Harrier gets most of the names wrong. The 1st boss is actually called "Squilla". Check out the scan below (the proper names are in RED

Space Harrier 2 is quite easy for me. In fact I can't tell any difference whatsoever between playing on the easiest mode and the hardest mode.

Also Ary I can't believe you don't like Space Harrier II. Look at it. TRANSPARENCIES!!!!!

I had no idea that the TG-16 manual was so tragically mistranslated.. all this time I've thought Wi Wi Jumbo had some unsung French connection.

A French boss? whoever made that manual is pushing a heavy anti-French agenda. ;)


I don't think I ever knew the names of the enemies in SH except probably "Mammoth". But I guessed that was the name of that thing.

The higher the difficulty in Space Harrier II, the more points you need to obtain lives, I think.

You only need a couple lives to complete SH2.

And a couple beers to tolerate its choppiness.

It's smooth as glass after you play some Super Thunderblade.

There is some noticable slowdown in the 32X version of Space Harrier (and 32X After Burner II). Plus, as mentioned previously, the 32X version of Space Harrier is somewhat letterboxed (not sure why). Never realized the shadows are not transparent until today.

I agree the non-scaling Space Harrier games are perfectly playable, once your eyes get used to the motion. I've beaten SH2 quite a few times on all difficulty levels (since it was one of the launch games I got back in 1989). Pretty easy one you recognize the patterns (same goes for all Space Harrier and After Burner games).

I also agree that I find the game easier with a D-Pad, as Harrier doesn't auto-center that way. Makes it a lot easier to aim (again applies to After Burner as well).

There really isn't any aiming or recognizable patterns in After Burner. Basically the whole time is spent trying not to get shot.

i dont believe it,it aint stuff a tg 16 could do,its pallet is almost similair to the md i think.shure i can get eternal champions sonic 2 and several more titles with trasparancies(at least they look like it) in RGB eh smart enough solution to get a pretty good image of that,uh blech i hate most of the console versions of that game,back in the days thje arcade version was the bomb.

The TG-16 had a better color pallete than the Genesis/MD...well, in the sense that it could show 512 colors on screen.

And "Super Thunderblade" was bad, really bad. Not "choppy" bad, but just plain bad.

Cost more, but it was worth it to me.

That's a cool collection. Super Thunderblade is insane choppy. I was always pissed that the arcade version was never offered in Sega Ages because it looks so cool (game itself is OK). I played it a few times in Grand Central Station.

I was going to buy After Burner 2 and Outrun a while back, but the $$$ wasn't there, or it was spent on other things.

One of these days... I'll pick 'em up. But I can live with the US release of Sega Ages right now. :)

If you are a fan of "Columns" you owe it to yourself to pick up that Arcade Collection.

It is a damn fine collection.
