I picked Hard Corps
I wish Contra had got such treatment as Castlevania got back in the day. I wish there were a PC-Engine CD Contra, a x68000 Contra, and a huge 2D PS1 Contra made by Konami themselves.
Better yet a 2D Contra on N64 or DC with 4P co-op.
Contra 4!
Okay, I voted for Hard Corps as well. I've sampled most of the other games and none of them really drew me in. Hard Corps is not only my favorite Contra, but the only classic Contra I like. Contra 4 does come in second for me however:)
Now is this thread going to go back into hibernation for a few years?
The original ported to the NES. Super C is a close second.
I've still yet to play Contra 4. It just didn't seem like a good fit for the DS and it sounds like the plot contains a lot of retconning (not that Contra had an airtight plot to begin with). Hard Corps, of course, being my favorite. But I also like Contra, Super C, and Contra III. Neo Contra is okay, it kind of reminds me of Loaded. The others did not tickle my fancy.
On a second thought, I'd say Hard Corps. Too bad I can't re-vote.
Despite my love of Hard Corps, I have to go with the NES version of Super C.
Contra 4 is good but I don't like the DS, I wish it was on WiiWare or something too.
I used to play and loved Contra force for nes as a kid, agree that it's one of weakest contra games but it's underrated and awesome! only other ones I have played was first two contra for nes and Contra shattered soldiers for ps2.
My best pick for best contra I have ever played is original Contra for nes.
They are all the same to me and I hold almost the same disinterest for each of them. Contra III has the SNES warble music but it is a cool exhibit of the system's capabilities. Contra Hard Corps has a soundtrack I have occasionally liked listening to but it is too sharp for my tastes. I have only beaten Hard Corps with a Game Genie, otherwise I would find it impossible. I also find the effects as ugly in Hard Corps as I do in Castlevania Bloodlines.
Contra and Super C on the NES never really kept my attention. They were very challenging but just didn't have what I wanted to keep me coming back for more abuse. The first game was novel when it was new and we knew the 99 lives code.
I haven't played any psuedo-3D Contra game and don't intend to.
I'm a huge fan of the original NES Contra game. I haven't played "all" of the contra games, but I've played a few, and for some reason, the stage design of the other contra games, don't seem to have the same magic that the original contra stages had.
No surprise HC is winning, lol. It was really tough for me to choose between Contra on the NES and Contra 3. I ended up voting for Contra 3.
Contra Hardcorps is simply epic in everything, multiple endings, multiple routes, multiple charaters with different abilities and the stages are very dynamic and keeps you pumped throughout. I can't really find a game breaking flaw and IMO Contra 3 doesn't come close to it. Think it's too hard? Try playing with the robot and using the homming weapons. I was never a very skilled player but I managed to get every ending playing alone and/or with my cousin when I rented it. A shame I could never find it for a good price :S
