But the problem is:
Thunder Force IV Musha Epic music ✓ ✓ Epic graphics ✓ ✓ Epic gameplay ✓ ✓

You know, honestly, choosing between MUSHA and TF4 is a tough choice. If only we could combine the two, it'd be the most mind-blowing shoot 'em up ever made.
ROM hack needs to be done!!
Where is Grind Stormer on that poll?
Steel Empire is the only steampunk game on the genesis, and went out way before the renewed steampunk craze.
my favourite is Gynoug atm.
Ya'll trippin; Grind Stormer ain't bad. the problem here is that Genesis was an absolute goddamn beast for SHMUP's and we don't have room for Tiger Shark, Elemental Master, etc etc...there's just so much greatness.
^This. Even almost impossible to do a top 20 without leaving great shooters out
I think Grind Stormer is awesome, even though I've only been aware of its existence for 2 hours.
The enemy patterns are very similar to the ones in Raiden Trad, though this game sure has a different theme than Raiden's World War III.
Can't really figure out the theme. Maybe mechanical animals?
they dont fly. Steampunk people do fly. Mostly with steam.
wait what does this mean for Shadowrun, much less Rise of the Dragon
Just because it's a alternative take on the natural progression of the victorian era doesn't mean that people have to fly.
There's plenty of steampunk literature, games, etc with pretty much no flying machines whatsoever.
That's like saying all Sci-Fi has to take place in outer space, because space travel is all about science.
I'd say both of those fall under cyberpunk if anything.
Mainly since both take place in the 21th century and have a lot of silicon based cybernetic implants and tech.
Yes a real SCI-FI movie must take place in the outer Solar System. If it develops in rock planets then it's BS.
I was joking. But you should agree that everything that flies is BETTER. And if you manage to fly with steam you are AWESOME.
There's also Nadia RPG, which is based on steampunkish anime by Miyazaki. But it is no shooter so back on topic.
Gynoug's still my pick. I don't get the Whip Rush praise. From the poll Phelios & Sol-Deace are good but nowhere near a top10 shooter list on the MD, IMHO.
Again, Gynoug
MUSHA is definitely great tech for 1990, but the pacing is typical early nineties console style to the extreme.
Let's face it, there isn't much challenge until the airship level with those turrets that fire the super-fast aimed shots, and that's on Hard.
It's a tie between MUSHA, Thunder Force III & IV for me, so I picked the one with fewest votes.
I would say MUSHA
Why EA's "Strike" Trilogy isn't on that list is utterly baffling
Also I think either LHX Attack Chopper or Steel Talons lets you blow up camels, so that's always fun
Air Busters
They're not really shmups, that's likely why they're not on there. With their missions that have to be done in a specific order to proceed, ammo management for all of your weapons, fuel management and all of that, they've got more of a likeness to run 'n gun action titles like Commando, Heavy Barrel and Mercs (but in a vehicle) than to Thunder Force IV, DoDonpachi and Viewpoint. The "Strike" series has some shmup qualities with how you fly around and blow shit up, but the series doesn't really go beyond that in terms of using what are considered the staple traits of the shmup genre.
And LHX is the one that let's you kill camels... which your avatar likely isn't all that thrilled with.
No. Those games aren't shmups either.
Sorry to be a jerk, but if you can't tell the difference between something like Afterburner and something like Thunderforce III, then you're likely to continue to be confused even after it has been explained.
Quite simply: shoot 'em ups employ forced scrolling with a 2D perspective and (typically) no gravity or free roaming paths.
yeah those are shooters, which is kinda the parent category of the shoot'em ups and also includes FPS, run'n'gun, shoot'em right ;)
I voted for Truxton
