you don'tplay rpg's I guess??
endings to me are very important in storyline games. it can totally ruin or make the game for me. for instance I hated red dead redemption storyline so much until the ending which made it all good.

Depends. I don't care that SMS Shinobi has no ending because the game is fun and there is very little story.
If an MGS game or something had no ending (seriously wouldn't put it past Kojima to do this) it would be bullshit as it's more about the character's journey than the experience itself.
Most games have awful storylines and awful endings anyway though, so it usually just happens that way
EDIT: what about this gem?

Only if it's a story-driven game. Otherwise the ending screen of "Congraturational!" is satisfactory for the most part, because the real accomplishment is actually getting to that point.
Oh, I forgot another example, Knuckles Chaotix
It's annoying when a game has a bad ending, but the good ending is just a screen saying congrats! or something. more effort put into an ending for fucking up? Like in Kunckles Chaotix where the good ending is just the title screen with Sonic & Tails and the bad ending is actually... an ending.
I think it validates the game, you are in effect spending living breathing time on a game, you should get your time back in story involvement.
Fuck cliffhangers.
Growing up I never played or even knew what an RPG was; I own a select few now but haven't finished them - I had been planning to wait until winter when I'm trapped indoors to dive in. The only RPGs I own and finished have been Crusader of Centy - which ended well enough considering the age group it was designed toward, the final boss could have been a little more spectacular (and perhaps a small improvement on the grammar); and a repo of Monster World IV - which was a real joy in every measure. Part of my problem is that I enjoy knowing I have a game on my shelf that I've never played before, coupled by the other problem of mine that I can't begin a new game before finishing another...
You absolutely hit the nail on the head with Knuckles Chaotix. It was actually one of the games I had in mind when posting. Back in 1995, I was fine with the bad ending as Super Metal Sonic / whatever hovered over the burning city / carnival / again, whatever. I hated the game's mechanics, the special stages, everything - so I didn't give a damn then about there being a good ending. Last summer after nearly 18 years I gave it another go - perhaps I've grown a little more patient but I actually enjoyed most the game... until that good ending screen. I was hoping for something more fleshed out, perhaps some animation play as in the other Sonic games, heck, there were pre-boss fight animated clips in this game - all I get is the exact same intro sprites with Sonic and Tails in the background?! DAMNIT!
This has all always been on the back of my mind, but after watching a few game endings lately I couldn't help but share my feelings with all of you.
Ever played all the way through Rampage on Nes with a friend? It takes hours and has to be one fo the worst endings ever. Sure it was the NEs but still. So yes it matters. Snatcher may have the best ending. It must last half an hour. If nothing else let me know what happens and give me some new graphics and music like Sword of Vermilion. I will say of all games RPG's better have a good ending. I always though Lunar Silver Star was a bit light and it really had no excuse.
I agree with rusty. Give me a few bitmaps of Hitler's head exploding or something. Don't do me like Super Double Dragon. That was a huge disappointment (actually every DD after DD2Nes was a disappointment, but I digress). YsI&II for the turbo CD is probably one of my favorites.
I have both Lunars (which I hope Silver Star isn't too shallow per Iron Lizard) Snatcher and Pier Solar; I'm really just waiting to be snowed in to get around to them.
Weirdly enough I've gotten to a point where I really enjoy watching other people play games rather than myself; but sometimes I'll watch an ending and think - "Wow, that's seems nicely put together and worth a try," or "That's it? That's the end? What a bummer..." As for example:
Have never played this game but the melodic tune with the shadowy backdrop of the stage makes me want to give it a go:

I own it and love it, but after busting it up on expert - was kind of hoping for a little something more:

Funnily enough Dynamite Heady's ending (and all the other story text) was removed when the game was released in the west.
Check out this play through of the translated Japanese version, there's text in the ending!
So do game endings matter? Not to Sega USA apparently! :D
I always have to wonder about the exploding Hitler head making it into the Western version of the game. Did Nintendo's censorship people just not play test it to the end, or did they just decide to slip this one past? Or are exploding heads OK as long as they're Hitler?
And yeah Super Double Dragon is a well known case of, "this game totally isn't finished, here it is anyway." Also I think Double Dragon Advance is pretty good if you haven't tried it.
I read over Nintendo's game rules (aka censorship policy), and it is bizarrely specific when it comes to allowing exploding Hitler heads.
"Hitler can only be shown in a game with his head exploding"
Man, as much as I love playing Super Double Dragon and will never sell my copy I am glad I have never muscled all the way through the brutal later levels. No exploding Hitler or anything? Pfft.
