Last December, it was a Nintendo product with a pattern of slow game releases, entering a market that was on fire with PS3 and Xbox 360 sales, at a price of $350. "More games are coming" was good enough for the weak console, and Nintendo hasn't lived up to that promise much. It's a year later. They're still saying it.

Killer Instinct - This game was lame on the SNES and N64, why should I get it when I have access to better fighters on my 360, Wii/Wii U, Saturn, and Dreamcast?
Dead Rising 3 - I was never a big fan of these games last gen, and considering it's a technical mess with a bad framerate and resolution I'm not that excited about running out and paying $500 to play it.
Forza 5 - I'm still happy with Forza 3 to be honest. Considering that 5 has less cars and I'm still not able to use a Logitech Wheel I'm not that thrilled about the game.

Adopting next gen consoles at launch isn't a good idea in general, where the comedy comes in is when the consoles are over a year old and still have nothing worth playing.

This is the main reason and arugment for Nintendo getting fucking annihilated by their own hubris. Nobody is getting a gun put to their head to prefer any one platform over another, but there is clearly something wrong with Nintendo if the whole market has grown steadily, yet they have declined constantly within it.

Unless they cut the MSRP, it'll be lucky to hit 6.5m by April. Nobody is rushing to buy consoles after Christmas.

Nintendo Wii U is a fucking worthless way of spending $300+ on video games. They need to fire Iwata and Reggie, and hire someone who knows the market to run the show. Either that or stop wasting their own money on shit hardware nobody wants or needs. People don't want Nintendo hardware, they want Nintendo games.

Some people think Call of Duty is fun to play online. How does that make it any worse of a choice than Mario Kart?

I'm more of a Battlefiled guy and have been playing BF4 on the PC for the past month. I think it is very much a killer app for the Xbox One and PS4, with tons of replay value over a year's time.

Yick! I have zero problem if you're having the time of your life with a WiiU, but this really comes across as straight up Reggie-like WiiU salesmanship - No games are interesting (or worth buying a console for) unless they're available on the WiiU?

Your interest in Watch Dogs certainly sticks out since it's conveniently one of the very few worthwhile multi-plats that's also going to hit the WiiU. Personally, I have a very suspicious feeling that games like Watch Dogs and Bayonetta 2 would simply be library-padding, forgettable re-treads that Nintendo fanboys are "not interested in" if they were only on Sony and Microsoft platforms. I mean, that's exactly what Bayonetta was until the sequel became a WiiU exclusive. Now, Bayonetta 2 is a higher game of interest than anything that is scheduled to be released on the PS4 and XB1 until 2015?

Alright. Whatever. To each their own. Games that the WiiU offers, and will offer in the future, appears to be enough to satiate your gaming itches.

However, I will argue that PS4 owners have much more to look forward to in 2014 than WiiU owners do.

Scheduled for 2014

-Infamous: 2nd Son
-The Order: 1886 - IMO, this looks crazy good.
-The Crew - New Ubisoft racing/ganster based IP
-The Division - Another new Ubisoft IP that looks pretty awesome, and is currently scheduled for WiiU release (I smell newfound interest)
-Destiny - New Bungie IP that I've heard is a mix between Halo and Borderlands. Not for Trekkies, but I'm sold.
-Metal Gear 5: Ground Zeroes - Yeah, I'm sure a few gamers are interested in this one.
-Strider
-Elder Scrolls Online - Not my cup of tea, but many next gen owners are gonna eat this up.
-Final Fantasy 14 - Again, not my cup of tea, but it'll be there for those who care.
-Helldivers - A 4-player Gauntlet-like shooter that looks very promising
-Dragon Age 3: Inquistion - New Bioware RPG that's getting a lot of positive interest despite the lukewarm reviews of the 2nd game.
-Dying Light - New IP by the devlopers of the Dead Island series.
-Theif - An IP reboot by Square Enix
-The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Sequel to a very well reviewed RPG series.
-Wolfenstein: The New Order
-Transistor - New IP from the creators of Bastion, which was a very nice old school RPG
-The Evil Within - A new horror IP by Bethesda and Resident Evil creator, Shinji Mikami
-Watch Dogs - Apparently, the only game on this list that Trekkies finds worthwhile ;)

That's not everything , but that right there is meaty list of exciting games to look forward to for gamers that have already bought into the PS4. I'd be lying if I said I was interested in all of them, but there's enough there to make PS4 owners feel like they own more than just a $400 brick. It's certainly enough to tide me over till 2015 games like Star Wars: Battlefront 3, Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XV, new Uncharted, and who knows how many other games.

That's the beauty of having reliably strong 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party support. Sony can say "the games are coming", and I can look it up for myself and see that they're not entirely bullshitting me.

When it comes to the WiiU lineup, I hear the same handful of games from everyone that cares to mention them - Donkey Kong, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros., X, Bayonetta 2, SMT vs. FE (which is so early in development that it might not hit in 2014), and now, Watch Dogs. And evidently, every Nintendo fanboy is interested in all of them, which makes me somewhat curious to see if they'll put their money where their mouth is...this time.

Now, I won't fanboy it up and say that I'm not interested in any of those games - I am buying a WiiU for the family after all - but I can honestly say that I'm only truly excited for is "X" by Monolith Soft. I'm intrigued by SMT vs. FE, but we don't even know what kind of game it is yet, however, Atlus has a stong track record with me and I'll probably be following it's development with interest.

Bayonetta 2 has seeded a newfound interest in playing the 1st game. If I enjoy it enough, B2 will make my game of interest list. Donkey Kong Country has a solid developer on it (Retro Studios), so chances are that I'll give it a shot. However, that's where the interest ends for me. I've never liked Super Smash Bros, and I'm personally sick to death of Mario Kart - I'd sooner get Sonic Racing: Transformed.

Beyond that, what else is there but to wait until 2015's Zelda U. And then what? Cross my fingers that they're working on another Metroid, Fire Emblem, F-Zero, Star Fox, Fatal Frame, Eternal Darkness (games and series' that don't come with absolute certainties of hitting Nintendo home consoles, like Zelda and Mario do). Well, Metroid and Fire Emblem are safe bets, but when? In 2 to 4 years? With diminishing 3rd party support, what comes out in between?

It's that kind of poor support that'll have me meticulously reading reviews I normally wouldn't have cared to read, browsing thru bargain bins, and buying games (probably for my daughters) I wouldn't have normally bought to justify owning the system. This will actually be the first time that I'm going to fully experience one of those famous Nintendo console gen-wide, waiting for games to trickle in, crawl to the end rigamaroles that's been hitting Nintendo consoles like a hammer since the N64. It is why I never cared to get a Nintendo console until just about everything has already been released (the end of the console cycle)

I don't even own the system yet, but I can already see that storm coming, and some can argue that it started shortly after launch. I certainly hope that my daughters love Mario (and the gamepad) as much as I think they do.

I own a Vita, and I love it, but I certainly understand why it's not selling well at all: There's not enough there that most people give a damn about, and there's not enough solid support for most people to look forward to. Kinda like the WiiU, but with Tearaway, Ys, and Killzone instead of Mario, Zelda, and Metroid.

I suppose I could be the Trekkies of the Sony Vita, but i don't think i have the energy to open that can of worms.

The Vita and wii u are in similar positions. Both go up against rivals with much larger support. However, the vita does at least offer comparable (if not superior) hardware.

I don't agree with many who say that the wii u's issue has nothing to do with the hardware. I think that's one of the biggest issues personally, because it's entire image is just wrong. It's touted as a new console with a brand new console price... it really isn't. It's thoroughly last gen + a pad. It's not able to go toe to toe with MS or Sony's new system, and unless a dev is willing to put in the time and effort, it can struggle to be just as good as their last systems (360/ps3)... all for a cost MORE than those last systems now sell for.... and they have huge catalogs of games you can get for cheap.

The wii was a perfect storm, maybe it looked worse... but you could, right from the start, go out and get it cheaper than ANY of the competition's SKU's, and bring home and set it up. The control scheme was something easy to market, and intriguing for many people to try out... it was also great at parties where people could pass around several games and have a blast.

That formula, timing + price + new, interesting to many, and easy to get into control + good/great advertising really clicked with the system, and held for quite some time.

You can't just try and pick and choose that. The wii u is almost the entire opposite of the wii... other than being underpowered. The control scheme is nothing new, nor is it something as easy to pick up for people who have never really done it before. It also doesn't lend itself to great advertising like the motion controls. It should have been marketed as a cheap and easy thing to get into. New, bit better than the 360/ps3 spec wise, and cheaper than either new (and some models used).

so wii = cheap, inexpensive, easy to get into, and well marketed to what it was.
wii u = cheap, too expensive, not as easy to get into, and poorly marketed for what it actually is.

Anyone buying a wii u and expecting it to be able to match up with the 360, ps3, xbone, or ps4 is going to be very disappointed. Anyone expecting it to be the wii is also going to be disappointed. The only people who seem to like the wii u are those who are completely satisfied only owning Nintendo games + a trickle of 3rd party games.

Me? I'm not content with that, not from any company. Look at Sega with the Dreamcast... they poured their heart and soul into that system trying to get people to buy it and play... they just lacked the financial viability to really keep it up or do more with it. When they finally called it quits it was pretty sad, and ended an era with their hardware.

I don't see Nintendo doing any of that. They have the money, the resources, the talent. They absolutely have the contacts in the industry to do some damned awesome things. But the only thing they seem to be pouring into the wii u is apathy... so for me? That's all they get in return. I will pick one up, absolutely. But unless they really show me they WANT people to buy this thing, and not just because they put another Mario/Zelda game out on it, then I'll be picking it up for a bargain basement price, which is much closer to what it should have been going for in the first place.

i think this discussion should be continued after a year. basically what we are doing is judging to early. plus the fact that wii u is doing good but just not asgood as the 2 others atm.

in my opinion the wii u is doing very good. wii u gets sold out more then before.
went to buy some pluche for my new born and i see wii us getting sold in loads. so either only that store is lucky or nintendo is ruling this holiday allready

It's already "one year later" for the wii u. I agree time will tell which of the new MS/Sony systems is doing the best, but the wii is going to have to really pull a huge reversal.

It's current numbers for the start of this holiday season are not exactly impressive numbers for a holiday. "Not as good as the other two" is an understatement... I just can't fathom how anyone can think that Nintendo is doing enough with the wii u, or that it's doing "well" despite even Nintendo stating it's not doing what they wanted it to do, nor forecast it to do. It's not even likely to hit it's downwardly adjusted sales projections.

I get that people will like it, and some will feel it's absolutely worth it. I'm sure some people loved their virtual boy as well. I know I liked my Saturn as well, but that didn't mean it was a sales success either.

What is discussed here is not any one persons personal feelings on the device, but the overall success and performance of the system... that it's not doing well, and not being adopted by the gaming masses, nor favored by third party devs is not opinion, it's outright fact.

What myself and others are stating is not trying to "kick them when they are down" but to hammer in that they are not doing much of anything to get themselves out of their situation. "Just wait and see" shouldn't be an acceptable business strategy if there's absolutely nothing new to wait for.

MS and Sony can point to a huge list of games from their own studios and a ton of others and say "that is coming up". And there's obviously others coming out aside from those, both big names and smaller indie style ones. Their "wait and see" is just a matter of the games for their new console catching up.

Nintendo had the wait and see last year... it's now the second year, and they are still in "wait and see". "Wait and see" is over for them. Now it's time for them to show people they mean business and try and really get the markets attention, or continue to be apathetic about the system and let it sit back and be a platform for their IP's and almost nothing else.

Those other titles are cross gen you knucklehead. They're on both 360/PS3 and Wii U/PS4/XBone. That's what Cross Gen means.

Why should I go out and get a PS4 for ACIV or Watch Dogs when I can get those on my 360, Wii U, or PC? Why should I run out and buy a PS4 or Xbox One for Madden, Fifa, NBA Live, or NBA2K14 when I can get all of those for my 360 and not really be missing much? Why should I run out and buy a PS4 for Call of Duty Ghosts when I can get it on my Wii U and have better controls? Why buy it for a PS4 when I can get it on PC and have both better controls AND graphics? Why should I buy it for either when I can get it for my 360 and have more people to play with? The same applies to Battlefield 4.

I didn't say it was. I said for me personally it was because I don't typically enjoy FPS games on consoles. Though if I really wanted CoD I could get the latest one on either my 360, Wii U, or PC and be happy. If I had to get a console version I'd probably get the Wii U version simply because I'd rather have Wii Remote controls over analog stick controls for a game like that.

And if you don't like First Person Shooters? Or if you don't like them on consoles? That's the problem with the PS4 and Xbox One. It's aiming solely at the dudebro audience who buys mostly the years latest FPS or Sports title and nothing else. If you're not interested in either of those genres there's very little incentive to get a PS4 or Xbox One at this time.

It has nothing to do with if the game is available on the Wii U, the point is that a lot of the big hitters for the PS4 and Xbox One right now are games that flat out don't interest me. If they were on the Wii U I probably wouldn't touch them either.

Let's take a look at those PS4 and Xbox One exlcusives you claim I'm being harsh on for not being on the Wii U:

Crimson Dragon - Average Metacritic is 56, User score is 5.5. The game is an insult to Panzer Dragoon Fans with broken gameplay and micro-transactions out the wazoo.
Ryse Son of Rome - Average Metacritic is 61, user Score is 5.6. The game is essentially nothing but pretty graphics and QTEs.
Killer Instinct - Average Metacritic is 73, User score is 6.1. While not a bad fighting game, it's not great either. The series was never nothing to write home about and was simply trying to cash in on the Mortal Kombat craze. That boat has long since sailed. What we're left with is a game that's designed to milk money out of nostalgic fanboys through micro-transactions.
Dead Rising 3 - Average Metacritic is 78, user score is 6.3. Probably one of the better launch titles, but for me personally I never really got into this series. Not to mention the frame rate issues make it less than wonderful to play. It's not a system seller to me.

I'm not the only one who has issues with these games. It has nothing to do with them not being on Wii U. It has to do with them generally being mediocre games.

Let's look at the 2 major PS4 Exclusives:

Knack - Average Metacritic 55, User Score 6.5 - A bland, boring platformer. Not much else to say about this one
Resogun - Average Metacritic 84, User Score 7.5. This one is actually pretty good, just not a system seller.

Again, the issue isn't related to the platform, it's related to the games themselves.

My personal interest in Bayonetta 2 is that I loved the first one on the 360. It has nothing to do with it being on the Wii U. If it was announced as a PS4 exclusive I would definitely be getting a PS4 ASAP. Watch Dogs overall looks like an interesting game. If it was an exclusive I'd probably be more inclined to get a PS4 or Xbox One. But it's not, it's multiplatform. My interest in either of those games has nothing to do with what platform they are on.

-Destiny - New Bungie IP that I've heard is a mix between Halo and Borderlands. Not for Trekkies, but I'm sold. - Multiplatform. This does actually look interesting, though it's also cross gen.
-Metal Gear 5: Ground Zeroes - Yeah, I'm sure a few gamers are interested in this one.- Multiplatform, cross gen. Also I haven't cared about MGS since the first one.

-Elder Scrolls Online - Not my cup of tea, but many next gen owners are gonna eat this up. - Multiplatform. Will probably be better on PC like most MMOs.
-Final Fantasy 14 - Again, not my cup of tea, but it'll be there for those who care. - Multiplatform. Has been out for a while on PS3 and PC.
-Helldivers - A 4-player Gauntlet-like shooter that looks very promising - Multiplatform, cross gen.
-Dragon Age 3: Inquistion - New Bioware RPG that's getting a lot of positive interest despite the lukewarm reviews of the 2nd game.- Multiplatform and cross gen, hasn't even been given a set release date
-Dying Light - New IP by the devlopers of the Dead Island series. - Multiplatform and cross gen.
-Theif - An IP reboot by Square Enix - Multiplatform and cross gen.
-The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Sequel to a very well reviewed RPG series. - Multiplatform.
-Wolfenstein: The New Order - Multiplatform and cross gen.
-Transistor - New IP from the creators of Bastion, which was a very nice old school RPG - Multiplatform.
-The Evil Within - A new horror IP by Bethesda and Resident Evil creator, Shinji Mikami - Multiplatform and cross gen.
-Watch Dogs - Apparently, the only game on this list that Trekkies finds worthwhile ;) - Multiplatform and cross gen.

Really the only one in that list that I'm somewhat inclined to get a PS4 to play is Destiny, and that's only because right now there doesn't seem to be a PC release coming. The 2 exclusives don't really jump out as anything amazing for me, and the others I'd rather get for PC or get a 360 or Wii U version than buy a whole new console for.

And there's enough there on that list to justify not getting a PS4 as a lot of those games can be played on plenty of other platforms. Those games are more of a reason to either upgrade my Graphics card or keep my 360 hooked up instead of getting a PS4.

True, it doesn't have all the big multiplatform releases, but it does have more than those 4 Nintendo titles. There's also a bit more that I haven't listed. combine that with it's current library and it's really not a bad system to have. Yes the system needs more third party support, but as I've been saying that's a problem of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The only way that will change is if you can somehow get every Wii U owner to run out and buy Madden 13 and Call of Duty Ghosts for the system to get EA and Activision to take notice or something else equally ridiculous.

On the Wii U (Or any Nintendo Platform) third parties are competing directly with Nintendo's first party titles. If Wii U owners deem those third party titles to not be of good quality, they're not going to buy them. They're going to spend their money on Nintendo games instead. Just look at the sales:install base ratio of your average Nintendo game on a Nintendo platform. It's typically double or more than that of the best selling 360 and PS3 games.

On other platforms you're not competing with the same level of first party output that you are on Nintendo platforms. If third party developers want their titles to sell well on Nintendo's platforms, then they need to put out titles that can stand a good chance compete with Nintendo's titles. This doesn't mean it has to be a cutesy kids game or a Mario clone, but the amount of effort Nintendo puts in to make their games look and play good needs to be put in to those third party titles as well. If you throw Nintendo Owners leftover scraps, they're going to sell like leftover scraps.

Killer Instinct - This game was lame on the SNES and N64, why should I get it when I have access to better fighters on my 360, Wii/Wii U, Saturn, and Dreamcast?
Dead Rising 3 - I was never a big fan of these games last gen, and considering it's a technical mess with a bad framerate and resolution I'm not that excited about running out and paying $500 to play it.
Forza 5 - I'm still happy with Forza 3 to be honest. Considering that 5 has less cars and I'm still not able to use a Logitech Wheel I'm not that thrilled about the game.

Why should I go out and get a PS4 for ACIV or Watch Dogs when I can get those on my 360, Wii U, or PC? Why should I run out and buy a PS4 or Xbox One for Madden, Fifa, NBA Live, or NBA2K14 when I can get all of those for my 360 and not really be missing much? Why should I run out and buy a PS4 for Call of Duty Ghosts when I can get it on my Wii U and have better controls? Why buy it for a PS4 when I can get it on PC and have both better controls AND graphics? Why should I buy it for either when I can get it for my 360 and have more people to play with? The same applies to Battlefield 4.

The rest are all cross-gen and I can get them for my 360 or Wii U.

They are the ones who matter in this multibillion dollar industry. They are the ones sustaining it. Nintendo needs to get them to buy the Wii U. 13 of those titles I mentioned are console exclusives. 6-8 more are what many would consider the definitive Console versions of those games. The rest are average to acceptable ports for the system that are available to you if you have the system.

If you're going to use the logic that some of those games are multiplatform so say they don't count, then let's use that same logic against the PS4 and Xbox One's library to make things fair. That eliminates all the sports games, Battlefield 4, Call of Duty Ghosts, Assassin's Creed IV, Need for Speed Rivals, Skylanders, Trine 2, Lego Marvel Super Heroes, Injustice, and more. All those games are available on cheaper systems like the PS3, 360, as well as the PC and some are even on the Wii U. Why on earth should I even bother with a Next Gen system for those games? Certainly not for graphics since my PC can handle those games better than a PS4 or Xbox One most likely can as you're so fond of bringing up. Should I get one for the exclusives? Considering most of those are being panned by critics as mediocre launch games that's not a very good reason to get them either.

If you are going to bring up multiplatform and cross-gen titles to justify the PS4 and Xbox One as a good purchase, the same should apply to the Wii U. If a game like Assassin's Creed IV is able to be used to strengthen the PS4 and Xbox One's Library, it should be able to be used to strengthen the Wii U library as well. Don't just pick and choose when it's most convenient for you.

They may be sustaining the industry as of now, but they're also the ones leading it to a boring, stagnating wasteland of nothing but Call of Duty Clones and annualized sequels. However that's a whole subject in and of itself. The point is, if those games don't appeal to you there's little reason to get a PS4 or Xbox One right now. Sure Nintendo could be doing more to get more Third Parties to port more Spots and FPS games, but low and behold a good chunk of those games still do show up on the Wii U. The only ones really missing right now are the ones from EA.

The point I was making was that if those games don't appeal to you (you know, a core gamer who doesn't want to play the latest Madden or CoD), then there's not much to appeal to you on the PS4 or Xbox One right now. Why do you think Sony is delaying the PS4 launch in Japan until they get more Japanese titles finished?

The Wii U on the other hand has a more well rounded library right now. It has a few CoD ports to appeal to that demographic, while also having a lot of titles to appeal to other demographics who are not quite interested in those titles. The one genre it's really lacking in right now is sports titles.
