You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Barone again.
______DEAD
How could anyone follow up Barone's post? You don't. It's perfect.
Super Mario 3D World looks fun, but for some reason it just doesn't hold my attention.
That stuff was a joke silly. My books are too awesome to cover with sheets (mainly dark fantasy and horror). I really don't consider my self a gamer though. I've really developed an aversion to that word over the past ten years. Just think of me as a guy who likes video games, but isn't obsessed with them.
Cho Aniki is a man's game that puts hair on your chest.
It is odd to me that anyone would state that the Wii U is not doing very poorly. Even Nintendo admits this. Sales for the Wii U are underperforming in a big way. At launch, the Wii U garnered very little enthusiasm. Some try and write it off to software, and while that's definitely been a problem, the other part of the problem is the hardware itself. It has failed to garner any interest.
Let's face it; the games for the PS4 launch and Xbox One launch are not exactly mind blowing. It's a lot of sequels that are available on current gen systems. People are excited by the potential and power of these new systems. No one was excited about the potential of the Wii U. When the original Wii came out, there was a ton of buzz due to the motion controller and the showing of the Wii at E3 and whatnot. The system had a new take on gaming, had a great software launch title to show of its new paradigm (Wii Sports), and most important, was inexpensive.
Nintendo certainly tried to do something different, probably thinking they could emulate the DS's capabilities and success on a console. What they failed to realize was A) that the dual screens of the DS isn't what made it successful (the long battery life and awesome library did, with the dual screen format contributing minimally to that) and B) the cost of the pad/controller would price the Wii U out of the impulse buy level that the original Wii held. So the Wii U has no excitement over its new form factor, has no exciting software (although that's finally starting to change), costs too much because of its current gaming paradigm, and introduced a paradigm in which no one is excited. The result, poor sales.
Now saying that the Wii U is underselling and saying it sucks are two different things. I think there's nothing wrong with the hardware. And once Nintendo gets more software out, it should do all right. But by having the wrong price point, and no novel selling point that interests gamers, they have ceded their lead to Sony and Microsoft. Most likely the best they can hope is to eke out a modest, N64 or Gamecube type success with this system. It is unlikely that they can recapture their mojo as third parties are already wary about spending big development dollars on a system with a limited audience (which, in turn, reinforces the low sales in a vicious cycle).
The Wii U may not be a failure already, but it has failed to dominate. Better luck to Nintendo next generation.
The Cho Aniki thing makes me laugh, so:
http://www.gamepilgrimage.com/sites/...Aniki_WiiU.png
What the hell just came over me? What does 100 mean?
I told Cornholio this:
Cho Aniki is an accurate representation of how babies are made in Japan. That game made my balls drop when I first played it.
Yet Sony put that same gimmick in the PS4 with the touchpad on the controller and the remote play with the Vita. But yeah, Nintendo's ideas are gimmicks, Sony's are the best ideas on earth.
Funny, the one person that said that and started that whole debate never actually developed a single thing for the system. But that's ok, let's take their word for it.
I admit they've had a good launch, but so did the Wii U. Let's wait and see how well they hold up as the holidays come to a close. The Xbox One may have sold 150k in it's first week in the UK, but in the second week it only sold 20k. The PS4 has sold 2.1 million units world wide as of today. 700k of that came from the recent launch in Europe and Latin America. So that's 1.4 million sold in the US as of today. 1 million of that was on launch day. So that leaves 400k that have sold in the following 2 weeks since launch in the US. That's a rather significant drop off too. Now could that be due to supply issues, or could it be due to less interest after the initial early adopter rush? We don't know. We won't know until we see how the systems continue to sell through the following weeks.
I'm not being a fanboy or trying to downplay the sales, I'm simply reminding you that the Wii U's first few weeks looked promising in sales too. If the next few weeks reveal that the PS4 and Xbox One are selling like hotcakes and are instant hits then I'll admit I was wrong.
I didn't say it was going to 100% own the holiday season. I said let's wait and see if there's a significant bump in sales over the holidays and that it had the better library of the other systems. There's a very big difference Barone. But I guess you wouldn't pay attention to that because you're having too much fun being a troll.
I didn't say Pokemon was a game just for adults. I said it was a game that is age neutral as there's plenty of people 25 and older who still play the games.
I didn't say wait a year. I said let's see how well the sales keep up by the end of the year. You know, just one more month. Or do you have absolutely no sense of time? Xbox One sales dropped dramatically in it's 2nd week in the UK. Let's see if that was due to supply issues or if it's a similar case to what has happened with the Wii U. The Wii U had strong sales in it's first few weeks too, and we all saw what that amounted to. It's not crazy or being a fanboy to simply say "let's see how well this holds up after the launch day hype goes away."
I admit the Wii U has done poorly this year. All I've simply been saying Barone is that before we deem it dead, let's see if it get's a bump in sales during the holidays.
Trekkies, you do understand the drop in sales for both Xbone and PS4 is due to them selling out quickly. Stop embarrassing yourself with your obsessive slobbering love affair with Nintendo.
it was only on shelves for 24 hours or less. they only filled out pre-orders with them. there hasn;t been a new badge either.
you must spread some more reputation around....
the fanboy is strong with this one
I've said this before, I'll say it a million times again.
I think the Wii U has potential as a console, I think the gamepad COULD be more than just a gimmick. Simply put, it needs more games, not just more Mario and Zelda. New Nintendo franchises, reboots of old ones, maybe some that actually have some more story in them!
As far as third parties go, perhaps nintendo needs to provide more resources for them to use this console appropriately? Is the architecture inherently hard to get around? How is it exactly gimped in comparison to the 360 and PS3? Nintendo's expectations for this thing simply to sell based on the fact that it was a follow up to the Wii. Sony almost did the exact same thing with the PS2, but they were able to compensate by getting back to what matters the most, and as Chad Warden said "Chad Warden's all about the games".
Looking at specs, there are ways the Wii U beats the PS3 and 360, but compared to the PS4 and One, the Wii U is so much weaker. YOU CAN USE THAT GAMEPAD FOR MORE THAN A GIMMICK! There's seriously potential there to use it for a more intuitive experience, although admittedly immersion might be a problem just because the thing is friggin' huge. There was a very good example earlier in the thread on an image on how it could be used for Watch Dogs, problem right now is that porting it to the Wii U is kind of unappealing to developers because the install base isn't there.
Remember the PS2? The PS2 was an awesome system DESPITE being weaker than the competition. It had the install base, over 100 million units worth, so developers had more than incentive enough to give developers motivation to figure out how to push its somewhat weaker hardware and more confusing architecture.
Unfortunately Nintendo has a bit of a branding problem, and I suppose this has been a problem since at least the Gamecube: Nintendo fans mostly buy games made or published by Nintendo, and most adult players view Nintendo platforms for children. I can't imagine how frustrating it would be for a developer to put so much work into a game, making sure that they made it as good as they possibly can, and then even if they receive good press, still have their games not sell well because of the platform they chose to release it on? Jeeze, I'd just go home and cry.
How can Nintendo fix this? Feature more third party games on their publications and demos? More marketing support for developers? How can Nintendo save themselves from being the "kid" brand and go back to being the brand that was for everyone that they had during the SNES days. Remember "Play it Loud?" that ad campaign was really successful in getting older players to play Nintendo games. They need something along those lines, they need to make things like Miis appeal to everyone, have them be family friendly without being too kiddy.
The Wii U is too little too late from the looks of things. Underpowered hardware for only 100$ cheaper than the PS4, not many games compared to its current competition with the 360 and PS3, there's a tough road ahead. They need to get their crap together if Nintendo's going anywhere with this.
And how about lowering prices on games sooner? Holy crap I miss players choice titles... 20$ for a game that sells really well.
I THINK ABOUT VIDEO GAMES TOO MUCH!
the 2nd screen gamepad is just a gimmick for the sake of gimmick. nobody cares for it and nobody should.
Nintendo is sitting on a mountain of cash, and is too stingy to invest it into actually being competitive or affordable.
Nintendo should fire Iwata, fire Reggie, get people who aren't fucking weird to be the PR face of the company. Then advertise and cut prices.
how much cash they have then? and how much is the wii-u costing them on a daily basis right now? must be a lot.
“They will fail to hit 9 million, and they will likely miss their profit goals.”
"Shares of Nintendo have lost 82 percent of their value since closing at 72,100 yen in November 2007, according to data compiled by Bloomberg."
http://www.businessweek.com/news/201...es-dwarf-wii-u
I don't agree it's dead. But so many seem to be operating under the assumption that Nintendo is doing fine, that they don't need to change anything, that they don't need to try harder to grab attention, that they owe the gamers nothing because they give us their exclusive games.
That I don't agree with at all, and think it's lazy bullshit. I give them respect for their past, but I don't give them a pass to be stupid because of it.
Many DO like it, and there are good reasons for it to exist... but for the cost increase it has for such an underpowered system... and use it has now? I disagree that it should have been bundled and required.
And someone mentioned the ps4 controller... did it increase the cost like the gamepad or the kinect? Is it marked as the main control scheme for the PS4? Is the ps4 underpowered compared to the competition? Not at all... it's a completely different situation for the new PS controller because of everything else surrounding it.
The kinect is a better analogy, because the xbone is less powerful, it did increase the price a good deal, and just like the gamepad a lot or people are giving ms shit about it. The difference is that the xbone is at least able to compete with the PS4, their difference in capability is pretty minor. You also have all the other features and a much more mature (in terms of finish, not age) for the MS and sony consoles as well.
The Wii U tablet makes me think I'm holding a steering wheel.
The PS4 touchpad takes 1/20 manufacturing costs. The Wii U tablet takes 1/3.
The ps4 touchpad is barely noticeable. I think it's kind of dumb, but it isn't all that obstructive.
The wii u pad to me is horrible, I hate it... a lot. I only enjoy it for incidental use, and can absolutely see how awesome it would be in certain kinds of games.
But for me, and apparently most other people, it just isn't all that appealing as a default control device.
THERE WE GO!
I think this is the biggest problem here, it's the Wii Us marketing, awkward commercials (like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dbGJieRaH0), and prices. For 100$ more you can get a PS4 with better graphics, and will probably have much more games.
Nintendo has a fairly capable system there, it has pretty terrible design flaws (I mean come on Nintendo, no hard drives? What is this 2001?), but at least it can do HD and 60 FPS. I know GTA V is never coming, but if it did, I'd totally buy a Wii U for it. SAME THING WITH A VITA FOR THAT MATTER!
That commerical illustrates so much that annoys me about the pad, and others I'm sure as well.
How many people were there looking at the tiny screen instead of the GIANT TV on the wall in front of them? And how many were doing anything... anything at all that was worth using that pad over? Like one or two people in that entire video as far as I saw... and there is literally nothing in those regards that couldn't have been done with a well done IOS/Android/WinMo app.
The rest? A normal controller would do almost 100% of everything shown there as well or better. A couple others? The wii mote would be just as good, if not better.
Damn, I thought that was one of the better Wii U commercials! It actually did a good job of showing the versatility of the gamepad. It's this last round of commercials that are killing me, with the kids discussing how to get the parents to buy it.
I proudly display my love for Nintendo, but they're just not getting it done with the Wii U. They purposely wasted great opportunities to have online multiplayer hits with Pikmin 3 and Super Mario 3D World. Their reasoning of wanting people to get together to play is stupid, antiquated, and a perfect example of how out of touch they are with today's gamer.
The video posted earlier about the Wii U getting crappy ports was dead-on! Nintendo needs to ensure the Wii U versions of games get more features AND they need to advertise those features to get people from buying the games on the PS360. For example, why should I buy the Wii U version of Marvel Superheroes? I'd love a reason because I will buy that game. The question is Wii U or PS4? And I really would like it on the Wii U because I'd like to support Nintendo, as well as the Wii U being the platform I play games with my kids. But these reasons are mine, I want Nintendo to give me a reason to buy it. And Nintendo should want to.
I think that Nintendo fanboys appreciate mediocrity. Just give them the next rehash of Zelda and Mario(Kart-Tennis-Party-Smash-Football-Wrestleling-FPS) and they'll be happy.
But then again, what games justify the hype for the PS4?
Oh, it's not a bad commercial. In fact it is well done. But they need to have commercials aimed at different people. That one as a quick "all in one" is fine. Maybe one focusing on the off tv play and ability to watch tv/netflix on the game pad while others do other things on the tv. Then another showing that yes, you can use a normal controller and actually play real games on it like you do on the other systems.
All of those things have different markets, and not everyone is going to care about all of them. Off tv play for me is useless. The ability to watch something on the pad while others use the system for me is useless. Anyone with a tablet or smart phone can do the same thing, and likely further away/ independent of the system itself.
The game pad is not a controller I would use for primary gaming, ever, unless absolutely forced to, it's absurdly uncomfortable to me to use, period.
So every single thing they showed in 90% of that commercial, while it was presented nicely, was entirely useless to me in every single way... and I know for a fact I'm not in the minority in that regard. The controller is neat... but the functionality exists in much more robust devices people already own... namely tablets, phones, and phablets (ugh I hate that phablet is a real term). Nintendo is just too late to the party to appeal to that. Many of the key demographic have no interest in it... because they already have one... and one that does that job better.
They may certainly want a new console... maybe even one that Nintendo can give to them... but they don't want an overpriced and half assed iPad chained to it.
What games justified the PS2 at start? Or the PS3/360? the Xbone?
Most systems have "ok" launches at best. The main reason people get them is to have the new thing and be prepared for what is coming up. For both of the new MS and Sony consoles, there are a lot of games people are looking forward to on them, and very few will be available until later.
The Wii has.... mostly just Nintendo games to look forward to. Which is enough for some, but not the majority.
You are 100% correct there! I did overlook that the commercial does not show that "normal" games and controllers are available. And I certainly see a lot of people not wanting a "weird" way to play, and therefore dismissing the Wii U thinking that's the only way to play. I know some of my friends were never interested in the wiimotes, let alone the gamepad.
And I agree that the off-tv, netflix, and tablet features are no use to me as well.
metal gear solid 5? I for one can't wait for that and there are and will be countless more. also can't wait for elder scrolls online, watch dogs, fallout 4.
and good point someone made on ps2 launch. got a great library despite horrible launch and even very bad hardware
I think the last two consoles with must have games at launch were probably the Gamecube and original Xbox. Smash Bros Melee was amazing, and the original Halo set a higher bar for shooters to follow later on.
I'm aware it can be due to a supply issue. Hence why I said let's wait and see if the drop was due to supply issues or if it's a similar instance of what happened with the Wii U. Why is this so hard for some of you people to understand?
It was on store shelves for 2 weeks in the US. There was a second batch released for Black Friday after launch here. So no, it didn't sell 2.1 million in 24 hours, no matter how you try to spin it. It sold 1 million in 24 hours in the US. It sold 700k in Europe and Latin America in 24 hours. So at best it sold 1.7 million in 48 hours with another 400k over the course of 2 weeks or so. This could be supply related, but we wont know for sure until we see how sales continue to perform over time.
Yeah, I'm a complete Nintendo fanboy. Please ignore all the non-Nintendo systems and games I own. Please ignore the fact that I also like the PS4 and intend to get one when the games I'm interested in come out. Just because someone disagrees with you and will debate their opinions with you doesn't mean they're a fanboy.
Melee wasn't a launch title.
I bought a Gamecube (a week after launch) for Rogue Squadron 2. Rogue Squadron was one of my favorites on the N64.
I have yet to see a PS4 or Xbox One on store shelves, and I travel all over the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Even last Christmas, you could find plenty of Wii U consoles available at retail.
I'd be amazed if the Wii U sold better than the Gamecube. The Wii U is a disaster, starting with the name (U sounds more like it's centered around a single person), only one gamepad packaged with the console (kids will fight over who gets to hold that thing) and games that have yet to ignite interest in the console.
I've got my fire suit on.
Seriously, Nintendo is still the king of the handheld market, but they've been so out of touch with the console market for quite some time. The Gamecube was an excellent console, but Nintendo did nothing with online gaming for that console and lost a lot of sales to MS, that was ready to take that segment of the console market. Nintendo has done nothing to establish its console as place to play online games. Their friends code crap is a happy friendly blanket to protect its users from the ugly side of online gaming. Nintendo would be out of the console market, if the Wii didn't provide a gimmick that brought in a more casual audience. They could pay publishers to provide exclusive content for the Wii U, but they are too proud of a company to do so.
Your fire suit isn't strong enough for Trekkie.
The GameCube deserved to do alot better, Nintendo was on the right track with the Cube. I biggest problem was that it was a purple lunchbox, you wouldn't see masculine men wanting to play a purple lunchbox in their living room.
I agree! The Gamecube had a great library of games, and its hardware was very comparable to the original Xbox. I see Metroid Prime and Rogue Squadron 2 as being the best looking games of that generation. I also have the Onyx version of the console, along with an Onyx GBA player. I like the console a lot, but I feel that Nintendo neglected the use of the BBA for online gaming and could have done more to make it relevant for the console. MS had its success with Halo and continued to do so with Halo 2; Nintendo could have done the same with games like Waverace, Metroid Prime and Super Smash Bros. Melee.
The Xbox One was readily available today on Amazon:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=728308
It was still available last I checked a few hours ago. People were even speculating if it was actually new stock or if it was just old stock from launch that still hadn't sold. And Newegg still has it in stock:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16868105084
People seem to forget that there were reports of Wii U's selling out in stores when it launched last year:
http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/g...sales/1727191/
Now we do know that it didn't last long and in some areas it wasn't entirely true, but there were reports of it none the less.
I admit it's not doing well. I admit that Nintendo needs to do something to dig themselves out of the hole they've dug, but some of your complaints are a bit silly.
The first complaint, "only one gamepad packaged with the console (kids will fight over who gets to hold that thing)" is just absurd. The Xbox One and PS4 only come with one controller too. I guess kids will fight over who gets to use those too. And funny that you mention this, I took my Wii U over to my relatives house for Thanksgiving and all my younger second cousins where there who are between the ages of 4 and 11. Between the 10 of them they were all able to figure out how to share the gamepad on their own by taking turns in games like NintendoLand without any guidance from myself or any of the other adults.
The second complaint, "games that have yet to ignite interest in the console" is also a bit silly. There are plenty of good games on the system at this point. You're just not paying attention. At this point the thing has plenty of great exclusive titles available like these:
Wonderful 101
ZombiU
Sonic Lost World
Legocity Undercover
Super Mario 3D World
Pikmin 3
NintendoLand
New Super Mario Bros. U
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
And then you have good versions of third party multiplats like these:
Assassin's Creed IV
Rayman Legends
Sonic and All-Stars Racing transformed
Need for Speed Most Wanted U
And then in 2014 you have the following coming:
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Super Smash Bros. Wii U
Mariokart 8
Bayonetta 2
X
Watch Dogs
Shin Megami Tensei vs Fire Emblem
So I guess it boils down to, what specifically are you waiting for to ignite your interest that's not there? What specific game do you want on the thing? This isn't me being a Nintendo fanboy/apologist or blindly defending Nintendo. I'm asking a legitimate question here. The Wii U has built up a decent library and there are at least 3-5 titles coming out for it next year that I personally find interesting. So what exactly is it missing that makes you think there's nothing interesting on it?
Personally I think the big issue with this idea isn't that there's nothing of interest on the console, as there is right now. The problem is that Nintendo hasn't done a good job at making clear just what all is available beyond Mario and Zelda.
I'm gonna call BS on losing sales to Microsoft. The Gamecube and the Original Xbox sold around the same amount of consoles that generation. So Nintendo didn't lose sales to Microsoft, both Microsoft and Nintendo lost sales to Sony.
You are aware of the fact that Nintendo has pretty much done away with friend codes at this point right? With the 3DS the friend code isn't per game, it's per system. So one friend code for everything. And with the Wii U they took this one step further to where you now just have one Nintendo Network ID that you create. And they have recently announced that they will be bringing this to the 3DS so you can merge your 3DS friend code and eShop to your Nintendo Network ID.
Whining about Friends codes is like whining about how the PS2's online multiplayer worked.
