well I have ps+ for 4 dollars a month and I already have over 50 FREE games and not just old games but games like Catherine, dragons dogma dark arisen, metal gear rising and many more
4.88 - 3.53 = 1.35 inches... And you can't tell the difference between 3DS & 3DS XL?
Wii U Gamepad 6.2" - Ps Vita 5" = 1.2 inches - seems like a pretty close size increase comparison... I can tell! Easily!
So through the goggles of Wii U fans:
doesn't matter that the Wii U can't play a 18-year-old medium like DVDs, I can just unplug the Wii U and set up a DVD player, even though its such a stupid inconvenience considering the Wii U is 2012 technology.
On top of that, I can also play Wii U games on the tablet while the DVD is playing. Why would I wanna watch the DVD?
No, through the goggles of Wii U fans:
I acknowledge that it's probably best as a secondary console because it's obviously behind the curve. However, what it does offer is pretty damn good.
HMDI port is already used for PS3.
The Wii U doesn't deserve better than Component anyways.
You don't have to bring your Wii U to the airport. It's already there!
I'm not saying you would be taking it to the Airport for that use specifically. I was saying if it was your carry on luggage (I wouldn't trust putting it below with the rest of the luggage), you could sit down and play it while you waited for your flight.
I'm not downplaying that the PS4 is more powerful. I'm simply saying if you want the same comparative features the Wii U gives you need to spend a lot more with the PS4. Heck even if it was with the PS3 it would cost more.
It's never made sense for me to buy a console when there's nothing to play on it yet. Which is why I am saying right here and now, the Wii U is the better deal with the better library.
Nope, just in general what you hear from people who own the consoles:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=716654
I was originally going to get a Pro Controller for mine as I figured the gamepad would be awkward, but after owning it now I really don't see much of a need to get a Pro Controller other than for when I have people over and I need more controllers.
I don't know, maybe the same people who would take their 360 or PS3 with them on their trip and take them as Carry-On luggage? Maybe the same people who make homemade portables out of their Gamecubes, Dreamcasts, N64's, and Xbox 360's?
I'm not saying let's all throw our Wii U's in our backpacks and run around outside playing them like morons. I'm simply saying as a feature it can become about as portable as a Laptop if you want it to.
Again, I'm not saying let's all run out and do it, I'm simply saying it's a feature that's available. The Airport example was just a unique example of describing it's usefulness as a feature.
Or just people who have more people in their home than TVs. Or for people who may want to play in a different room than the one the Wii U is hooked up in. I've numerous times sat and played my Wii U in my bed or while sitting at my computer, neither one of which are near my Living Room TV.
True, but not all of them.
Funny, I can have my Wii U hooked up downstairs in my parents house and be in my room which is upstairs and on the complete opposite side of the house and play just fine on the gamepad.
Good for you. I'm not saying it should replace your phone or your portable systems. I'm simply saying that if you already had it with you, you could play it. If I was going on a trip for a Week or Two to visit Family for the Holidays or something, I'd already take one of my consoles with me to play when I got there. So with the Wii U if my flight got delayed I could sit and play it while I waited.
And you still didn't answer why it was more embarrassing than using a Laptop that was plugged in.
I was a PS2 Owner, I didn't get a PS3 this gen. I got a 360 and a Wii instead. The 360 was cheaper and had the better versions of the games I wanted to play. I know plenty of people in my office who were 360 gamers this generation who are not getting an Xbox One. They are getting a PS4 instead. I have no intention of getting an Xbox One either. I'll be getting a PS4 most likely next year. My younger cousins are Wii and 360 gamers this generation. But instead of an Xbox One they want a PS4 and a Wii U.
The truth is, there's a lot of 360 gamers jumping ship to the PS4 this generation. I wouldn't really downplay it if I were you.
Here's a better question, how many people actually watch movies on their consoles regularly?
I have a 360 and a PS2 hooked up to my HDTV. Guess which one I watch movies on. (Hint: the answer is none, I use my BluRay player for that).
I wouldn't have it with me, because I'd have a laptop, smart phone, a couple of gaming magazines and either the PSP or GBA in my backpack. The last 2 times I'd visited my parents (it's now just parent) that's exactly what I'd packed. I'm stuck at the airport, I bust out the phone for a look at the internet (airport Wi-Fi sucks) for entertainment, read through a magazine and possibly pull out a portable for a quick game. When I get to my destination it's all about the laptop, with internet, older PC games and a large quantity of games provided by MAME, K-fusion and ZSNES. It's the setup I've been using for quite some time, with all of the traveling I do for work.
How could it be embarrassing to pull out a laptop at an airport? It's not the same as pulling out the Wii U controller and looking like I have a Fisher-Price toy in my hands.Quote:

I got the PS3 first, because it was also a great Blu-Ray player. I had/have a 720p HD CRT that was just begging for HD games and movies, and the PS3 covered both of those categories. I actually played the Xbox a lot more than the PS2 from 2004-2006, but I still thought Sony's 1st party software was outstanding. You're kind of overlooking that a lot of gamers owned more than one console from that generation; it was a 60 gig PS3 and an Xbox 360 Elite for me.Quote:

How many of those gamers just owned the 360 though? There are a lot of gamers that finally jumped on the PS3 platform and found it to be just as enjoyable to play as their 360. I feel that the 360 user-base is somewhat inflated, considering that nearly 50% of them had failed consoles that were either replaced or repaired by MS. I have (2) 360s, just in case one shits the bed.Quote:

I better not. The gaming Gods might smite thee for doing such a thing. :wtf:Quote:

My PS3 has been my main movie device for 7 years. I occasionally watch HD-DVDs on my Xbox 360 as well. The $100 Blu-Ray player in our master bedroom might as well be a brick; it doesn't play recent BR movies and its Netflix player is beyond slow. My wife doesn't even bother with trying to watch movies on that crappy BR player and I rarely watch anything that is on DVD, since it's such a horrible format for HD televisions.Quote:

Toshiba didn't put enough effort in the war. Couldn't they have given Microsoft a good deal to use HD-DVDs in the 360? that'd be a far more epic battle, each console representing a different format
and they wouldn't be compressing 360 games to hell, nowadays.
It is when you don't get basic features like the ability to run it in the game's native video mode, use save states, or graphics filters.
European TVs can output 60hz now, they totally boned over the European market when they release VC games over there because they don't even have an option to use a 60hz rom. Something that's exactly the same thing and free shouldn't be better than something you have to pay for.
I'm still blaming Nintendo because it's their fault a defective product is listed in THEIR online store, wouldn't give me a refund, or even the option to at least let me experiment with different video modes...
Except for it's next gen hardware, better graphics, more games.
Seriously the only reason I prefer the Wii U to the PS4 and One right now is that for the time being the Wii U is the only console with backwards compatibility and games that interest me. Super Mario 3D World, Sonic Lost World, New Mario Bros. and Luigi U (yeah I know it's the same thing as every other New Mario game but whatever, they're fun), maybe Nintendo Land, I don't know. Give it a couple of months, the PS4 and One will have so much more games, and this really makes me sad because Nintendo it means that we're never going to have a Nintendo console that is as good as the SNES.
I hope things change and we start seeing games that are better, but I would not be surprised if this thing was dead completely in two years.
Yeah, but you are dismissing the flip side of the argument. Those features are available to a PS4 owner IF they want them, however, A WiiU owner simply cant get PS4 features without buying one too. Console features are a nice way to spin value, but at the end of the day, most gamers are buying a video game console to play video games, and the PS4 is going to offer much more of them over a longer duration of time. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party support that the PS4 has is just about the best feature a video game console can have, and personally, is worth more to me than off-TV play. If PS4 owners desire off-TV play, they have the option to buy a Vita, and they will eventually have a much deeper library to experience that feature with.
I am sure that Nintendo was certainly hoping that more people viewed those features as you appear to, but it doesnt look to be working out that way.
Today, but what about tomorrow, and the day after? The problem with the WiiU is that the 360 and PS3 offer comparable tech at a comparable price. Right here and now, the PS3 and 360 are better deals with the better libraries, and will continue to be unless Nintendo pulls off a miracle. IMO, that is the biggest problem that the WiiU has: It is certainly not powerful enough to go the distance with the PS4 (or XB1), but it is also not powerful enough to be considered $300 better than what people already have.
Have not followed this thread since page, I dunno, 8 maybe? But still trying to pinpoint why people would have pre-ordered or just picked up a PS4 or Xbox One and deny picking up a Wii U with a free game.
PS4 and Xbox One do not have much to offer right now, though they eventually will. Wii U doesn't have a hella lot to offer right now, but you know Nintendo will support it and eventually populate it with games you'll want and won't ever get elsewhere. I was wrong earlier when I suggested that 360 and PS3 are done, they obviously aren't. PS3 expects continued support through 2015, and 360 through 2016 so it's not as if they're forcing you to switch now. What's the point in upgrading if mutliplats will release a port for last gen? Until some worthy next-gen titles come out, there's no really good reason to buy next-gen at the moment. The more people who refuse to burn the money now, the more likely we'll see some price cuts or some decent bundles in the next year.
Just seems people need much less incentive to buy PS4/Xbox than Nintendo. Nintendo needs to prove beyond a shadow that their product is worth it, and the other guys just need to put something out there and the same people will scarf it up like money was never a concern. Seems some people are just burnt out on Nintendo and won't just admit that rather than pretending it's some calculated decision about value. They'd rather settle for someone else's lackluster launch and sit around waiting than play what Nintendo has right now, and pick up the other when it's ready.
The problem with that is the wii u pretty much ONLY has Nintendo's games to look forward to. The other two consoles have the promise of a much larger and deeper library of games from far more developers.
And of course for those who are concerned about the graphics then it's self explanatory why the MS and Sony consoles would be more attractive.
Overall I do agree that there's little reason to get the ps4/xbone right at this moment, it's pretty much a done deal that if you liked the ps3/360 you're going to have plenty to enjoy on the new systems.
I have not picked up either next gen console from Sony and MS. There are still plenty of titles that I've yet to play on the PS3 and 360, and they still offer a great value for someone that has not purchased one or the other console. I didn't pick up the PS3, or 360, until they started offering a decent library of games, and I'll pretty much do the same with the next-gen consoles from those companies.
I see the Wii U as being much like the Wii; It's hardware isn't really that much more powerful than the current-gen consoles and it's only selling point is Nintendo's software. I used to love Nintendo's 1st and 2nd party software, but lately, it seems to be more of the same stuff they've offered in the past, with a slightly new twist. I'm finally at the point where I plan on picking up a Wii, since I have purchased a few games (including Xenoblade), and the price for a used console isn't very expensive. I pretty much view the Wii U in the same manner; it's a console that I'll eventually get on the cheap, since most of its 3rd party software isn't better than what the competition already has.
And if you invested that $4/mo instead, you could be doing a lot better down the road. I'm a piss-poor investor and still return ~7%/yr, instead of wasting it on PS+ which may or may not be around down the road. I stick to physical releases so I can enjoy them for years. You're giving up about $5k in retirement savings to Sony (So really you've paid more like $100 per game). Enjoy! Gotta love corporatism.
I've been following this thread for the shits and giggles, and I've got BREAKING NEWS for you guys who are determined that the Wii U is horrible and a failure and feel the need to try to force that opinion on those of us who are happy with the Wii U. Get this, it's absolutely earth shattering information, no joke! You don't have to buy what you don't want or like! Amazing, huh? No one is going to hold a gun to your head and force you to buy a Wii U, whether or not it's successful (Though I bet at least for Nintendo it'll be successful, which is all that really matters at the end of the day in the real world). So let those of us who like the Wii U enjoy it, and instead of pissing yourself about it go get a PS4 or Xbone, and enjoy it! I'll probably pick up a PS4 to compliment my Wii U once some decent games start coming out for it, but right now there aren't any. I don't like beefcake man running around killing things, so there goes a majority of the games, and I don't like online play I deal with people all day at work, not so keen on doing it at home. Maybe once Cave, Atlus, or Vanillaware start dropping games on there I'll get it, but until then it's worthless to me.
And seriously? I forgot who it was (alcohol is involved, hence my emergence from lurking) talking about playing DVDs or BluRays on the Wii U? Seriously? In 25 years I've never bought a system because it could play movies, because, get this! I like to play games! And most of the middle and upper class will already have an alternate means to watch movies if they desire. It's not 2000 anymore guys. Out of the last gen, Wii was my most played system, with 360 a close runner up thanks to Cave. But not all of us suffer from TPS and have to have brown everywhere and big guns to make us feel manly.
And it's not the 90s anymore, the market is more than large enough for three players now.
See, I'd be all about that except there isn't any reason Nintendo can't do better. It would be one thing if they were obviously doing everything they could to make this system as successful as they could be, and yet it still didn't take off... that'd be fine. But the issue I personally have... and I know many others do as well.. is that Nintendo seems to be content to just sit back and let it do however it's going to do. I don't find that acceptable from a company that is selling something that has direct competitors trying harder to win consumers over.
It's a feature built in and reasonably expected for new systems. You may not like it, but people ding the PS4 for not playing CD's and those are an even older format with MUCH more commonly used alternatives. As for the TPS/Brown comment... well, there are plenty more games than those on both systems, as well as some of those games on the Nintendo system. That's just as stupid as "Nintendo only has kiddy games" argument, except that Nintendo doesn't do a hell of a lot to try and dissuade that impression.
I 100% agree.... but Nintendo doesn't seem to care to actually fight for the market... they are content to be an "other" system that sells almost exclusively on the strength of their own IP. They would only be in a stronger position if they had the same quality of support as MS/Sony do. I said it before but if Nintendo had released a system comparable to the Xbone/PS4, grabbed a bunch of 3rd parties to support it, advertised it well, AND had their own trademark games... it would be no brainer for myself and many to get before anything else... and if you were going to go for only one system, it would be just as viable as anything else, possibly even more so for many.
I'm pretty certain that most gamers that pay for PS+ are aware that the "free" games are basically just rentals. However, for $50 a year, it does offer the opportunity to play a lot of games that people are interested in playing, and I'm sure that many people see value in that. Personally, I see a lot more value in a one-year subscription to PS+ than a physical copy of Aliens: Colonial Marines (for instance). Borderlands 2 is a "free" game offered this month, which is a fantastic option (amongst other games) for what amounts to $4.
I mean, after all, it is a subscription that is offered to gamers looking to spend money on playing games, and it doesn't appear to be a very expensive alternative for the number (and quality) of games that it offers.
Hardly anyone here is trying to convince people that bought (and enjoy) a WiiU otherwise. If Nintendo exclusives are your preference, then it's silly not to get a WiiU. People have and are buying WiiUs, and I'd like to think that they're doing it because it offers experiences that they're interested in (and see value in). Obviously, anyone that's having fun with a WiiU shouldn't care if so and so finds it "kiddy".
However, the primary argument (at least for the last 10 pages or so) has been which system has better overall value. Trekkies obviously sees a lot of value in the WiiU, and there's nothing wrong with that in and of itself, but when he says that it has more overall value (rather than personal value) than the PS4, well, some people are going to disagree with that. A handful of us would love nothing more than a current gen Nintendo console that offers as much as the SNES did.
Well, I really doubt anyone here is staying away from the WiiU because it doesn't play DVDs or Blu Rays, just like I doubt many people would stay away from the PS4 because it doesn't offer off-TV play without the purchase of a Vita, but we are discussing features and value. If someone argues that a PS4 can't play off-TV, which is a peripheral feature that holds varying degrees of value to different gamers, then it doesn't seem absurd for a counter-argument to state that the WiiU can't play blu rays (or even DVDs).
I'd be lying if I said that I haven't used my systems for disc-based movie watching, and is actually a feature that I've utilized more than backwards compatibility over the past 13 years. Like many others, I don't need these new systems to be able to play DVDs (everything plays DVDs anymore), but another machine that can play Blu Rays is pretty nice in my book. I don't need another Blu Ray player, but it's nice to know that it can play them should my primary player crap out. I certainly feel that a PS4's use as a Blu Ray player will be much more common than the WiiU's ability to be played in an airport.
Yea I wish I could be praising Nintendo's latest console. Imagine how much the tables would turn if they created another SNES or even GameCube(just no purple lunchbox/stupid medium).
I hardly care paying 4$ a month to be able to download and play games freely for at least 10 years. like I need 10 years to play through them. psn will be around a long time so will the games. and as long as you have ps+ you can always download those games for free
Piss poor investor is right. 5k in retirement savings? More like $2400 of your already taxed money going into a fund you don't touch for 50 years. You build interest at 7% and it adds in and around $1400, which is only $500 after inflation rates have taken into account. Result? You have $3800 in 50 years, that's only going to be worth $1500 in today's money anyway.
We're depraving ourselves of a service for the sake of a few months pay, 50 years from now, with the cost of a large cup of shitty coffee each month, a service that links free games to your account and offers you permanent discounts on digital content you might buy anyway. All for $1500, a lifetime away.
It's never a bad idea to save money, but come on. You need money to make money, and $4 a month is nothing. I've seen $1500 as a week's pay.
No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing on you their opinion that the Wii U is a failure and a piece of shit with a mediocre future, no support, no longevity. It's just a poor choice of hardware for anybody looking to "Invest" and get a decent "Return" out of their closed proprietary game box of choice.Quote:

It's not the 90s anymore. Now there are powerful PCs, tablets, phones, and toasters that have the capability of overlapping and crushing Nintendo due to their own poor judgement. Now we have Xbox, Playstation, Steam Machines & PCs, for next generation choices, and 360, PS3 and Wii U with no library for last generation performance.Quote:

Nobody wants Nintendo to fail.
I'm confused as to why people are saying the Xbox One or PS4 is a 'bad pickup' due to it's small library.
You guys do know games will get released, right? And will play on launch models?
Because prices are gonna go down, so why pay full price when right now there's not much to play?
it is a good reason honestly.
guess what?
im enjoying monster hunter to the fullest with my headphone talking to friends
im enjoying cod ghost, kill some peeps and be a boss for a moment
im enjoying zelda ww HD sailing from place to place and finding out what to do
im enjoying
and you could enjoy and have that good time to
I liked Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii so I will give you that one.
PC, XBOne & PS4 versions are better tbh, although I don't really like COD anyway.Quote:

Good game, but I don't really like the way Nintendo are just re-releasing old Zelda games like OOT and WW, good games I guess but i've played them before.Quote:

None of which really tells me why I should totally put £200 down on a Wii U and not save towards another console.
Enjoyment with not a lot of traction for people.
Personally, I have Monster Hunter Tri on Wii, I already played the earlier games on PSP, and reluctantly picked up 3 on the Wii because it had a lack of awesome games too. Why would I buy a Wii U for the same game again with more bullshit added to it?
I can get COD Ghosts on PC, Xbox 360, PS3 rather than pick up a Wii U to play it. I already bought a Gamecube with Zelda Wind Waker packed in with it 10 years ago. Same reasons to roll my eyes as Monster Hunter 3.
There's not a lot to redeem it for Nintendo. For the bullshit they offer right now, MSRP should be $199. I'd buy a Wii U at that price out of pity.

Everyone else: +1
I've said it on other boards, and I'll say it here again:
The problem with WiiU is not the system being "underpowered" compared to PS4/XBO, the Upad, or the games.
No, the problem with WiiU is Nintendo. Nintendo is the problem.
What do I mean by that?
I don't mean Nintendo's own games. I know even liking Nintendo developed and/or published games seems to be akin to burning ancestral villages here on Sega-16's forums, but IMO Nintendo does make some fine games. No, the problem isn't Nintendo games, but Nintendo not establishing and communicating the value of the console as a whole (hardware, including the Upad, and the software, which, as we all know, is what sells game hardware). They've not established and communicated the value to consumers, including to their own "core" consumer, nor to third parties.
How does one establish value to third parties? Better support. That doesn't mean moneyhatting (although that would help), but just being more open. Nintendo seems to be opening up a bit more, particularly to indie devs, but they aren't where they should be yet. I recall reading somewhere that the dev kit docs for WiiU were painfully short, missing important info, etc. Quite a few third parties did their own preliminary tests based on 360/PS3 code (which, as we know now, shouldn't be how one devs WiiU software), decided it wasn't up to snuff, and called it a day. The others that stuck with the console just weren't well supported by Nintendo in terms of answering questions, having finished kits, etc.
So right there we see a major part of Nintendo's problem was (and still is) just communicating the basics with third parties.
How about consumers?
Well, the way to establish value and communicate that value is via marketing efforts. I know many here on Sega-16 would scoff at this statement, but the "Wii would like to play" marketing campaign for Wii was a MAJOR part of why it hooked consumers, particularly "casual" consumers (again, those that buy few games as defined by marketing terms). The core was had, early on, by having a good clip of releases, but then the typical Nintendo droughts and flagging third party support reared its head ~2009-2010, and sales dropped off dramatically. WiiU has started out, right out of the gate, with those same Nintendo software droughts, lack of third party support (even worse), and, to top it all off, Nintendo has seeminly forgotten how to friggin' market hardware.
The ads I've seen for WiiU are pathetic. We're talking NES Zelda nerd commercial pathetic, but back then Nintendo, for all intents and purposes (due in no small part to their monopolistic practices) was "the only game in town" (as far as the US and Japan went). There's no "Wii would like to play" brilliance, no cohesive coherent message as to the value of the console to consumers, to families. It's just...there. And it isn't selling.
Remove the Upad and knock a hundred bucks off of the price and it likely still wouldn't sell well, IMO. That's because the issue isn't really the hardware, the Upad, but Nintendo themselves. They've apparently thought it would just sell just...because. It was hubris. The same sort of hubris that screwed them up early on with 3DS (the person at Nintendo who thought a $250 portable video game system would fly should've been immediately fired, IMO. Absolutely idiotic price point for that type of product).
As for PS4 and XBO flying off shelves now: launch "glow". Six months from now will really tell the tale of how those consoles, and the product market as a whole, are going to do. I for one think they will continue to outsell WiiU, but it's very doubtful they'll sell as well as they are now. Launch "glow" tends to dissipate, and the summer months are slow for game software and hardware sales. Strong consoles, sales-wise (and consumer perception wise, in terms of perception of value) tend to survive better during those slower months. If PS4 and XBO do that, and WiiU continues to struggle, the writing will be on the wall. If PS4 and XBO, by some minor miracle, sell as well or better than they are now, then the writing will have been written in WiiU's blood. If WiiU strengthens up a bit this holiday, and rides that into the summer months, with XBO and PS4 drop off a bit but not dramatically, then all the better for the product market as a whole (note that I'm not saying WiiU will sell better than PS4/XBO in this scenario, but rather that it itself would pick up a bit).
If all three experience severe downturns in sales hitting those summer months, then bad, bad mojo ahead. That would be a sign that the product market is contracting, not growing. I for one cannot believe such a thing would happen, but it is "scary" to contemplate. That would be another market correction ala the so-called "Crash".
With all respect. Your crying
There are plenty commercials in europe. PLUS THE WII U is doing well again. It is a console that came late 2012. And in some lands early. 2013. They sold till octobre 4 million. So it they would sell. 6 mil ommore in one year and some months? Thats actually decent
^^^The console is tracking worse in the US, the MAJOR market for consoles, than Gamecube and Dreamcast did. Dreamcast had the excuse of a financially weakened Sega selling it, so they couldn't do things like pack-ins, price cuts, etc. until later (here I'll note that Nintendo dropped the GC price to $149 in a shorter amount of time, comparatively, than Sega did for DC).'
The bulk of the sales for WiiU were front loaded, during the launch "glow". Since then, monthly sales cliff dived. There's been an uptick since October (beginning of the holiday shopping season), but not by nearly as much as desired.
