I admit the Wii U's sales aren't looking too hot right now. Though it has had a decent surge going on in Japan, and it did get some kind of bump for November, it's not as good as it could be. Though when no one is advertising it for Black Friday you can't be surprised when it doesn't sell as well as it could. Though I have seen a lot of stores stocking up on newer bundles throughout December and really pushing it. So perhaps it can still pull off a decent Holiday Season. We'll just have to wait and see.

Nintendo Wii U is a fucking worthless way of spending $300+ on video games. They need to fire Iwata and Reggie, and hire someone who knows the market to run the show. -Metal Gear 5: Ground Zeroes - Yeah, I'm sure a few gamers are interested in this one.

-Elder Scrolls Online - Not my cup of tea, but many next gen owners are gonna eat this up.
-Final Fantasy 14 - Again, not my cup of tea, but it'll be there for those who care.
-Helldivers - A 4-player Gauntlet-like shooter that looks very promising
-Dragon Age 3: Inquistion - New Bioware RPG that's getting a lot of positive interest despite the lukewarm reviews of the 2nd game.
-Dying Light - New IP by the devlopers of the Dead Island series.
-Theif - An IP reboot by Square Enix
-The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Sequel to a very well reviewed RPG series.
-Wolfenstein: The New Order
-Transistor - New IP from the creators of Bastion, which was a very nice old school RPG
-The Evil Within - A new horror IP by Bethesda and Resident Evil creator, Shinji Mikami
-Watch Dogs - Apparently, the only game on this list that Trekkies finds worthwhile ;)
That's not everything , but that right there is meaty list of exciting games to look forward to for gamers that have already bought into the PS4. I'd be lying if I said I was interested in all of them, but there's enough there to make PS4 owners feel like they own more than just a $400 brick. It's certainly enough to tide me over till 2015 games like Star Wars: Battlefront 3, Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XV, new Uncharted, and who knows how many other games.
That's the beauty of having reliably strong 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party support. Sony can say "the games are coming", and I can look it up for myself and see that they're not entirely bullshitting me.
When it comes to the WiiU lineup, I hear the same handful of games from everyone that cares to mention them - Donkey Kong, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros., X, Bayonetta 2, SMT vs. FE (which is so early in development that it might not hit in 2014), and now, Watch Dogs. And evidently, every Nintendo fanboy is interested in all of them, which makes me somewhat curious to see if they'll put their money where their mouth is...this time.
Now, I won't fanboy it up and say that I'm not interested in any of those games - I am buying a WiiU for the family after all - but I can honestly say that I'm only truly excited for is "X" by Monolith Soft. I'm intrigued by SMT vs. FE, but we don't even know what kind of game it is yet, however, Atlus has a stong track record with me and I'll probably be following it's development with interest.
Bayonetta 2 has seeded a newfound interest in playing the 1st game. If I enjoy it enough, B2 will make my game of interest list. Donkey Kong Country has a solid developer on it (Retro Studios), so chances are that I'll give it a shot. However, that's where the interest ends for me. I've never liked Super Smash Bros, and I'm personally sick to death of Mario Kart - I'd sooner get Sonic Racing: Transformed.
Beyond that, what else is there but to wait until 2015's Zelda U. And then what? Cross my fingers that they're working on another Metroid, Fire Emblem, F-Zero, Star Fox, Fatal Frame, Eternal Darkness (games and series' that don't come with absolute certainties of hitting Nintendo home consoles, like Zelda and Mario do). Well, Metroid and Fire Emblem are safe bets, but when? In 2 to 4 years? With diminishing 3rd party support, what comes out in between?
It's that kind of poor support that'll have me meticulously reading reviews I normally wouldn't have cared to read, browsing thru bargain bins, and buying games (probably for my daughters) I wouldn't have normally bought to justify owning the system. This will actually be the first time that I'm going to fully experience one of those famous Nintendo console gen-wide, waiting for games to trickle in, crawl to the end rigamaroles that's been hitting Nintendo consoles like a hammer since the N64. It is why I never cared to get a Nintendo console until just about everything has already been released (the end of the console cycle)
I don't even own the system yet, but I can already see that storm coming, and some can argue that it started shortly after launch. I certainly hope that my daughters love Mario (and the gamepad) as much as I think they do.
I own a Vita, and I love it, but I certainly understand why it's not selling well at all: There's not enough there that most people give a damn about, and there's not enough solid support for most people to look forward to. Kinda like the WiiU, but with Tearaway, Ys, and Killzone instead of Mario, Zelda, and Metroid.
I suppose I could be the Trekkies of the Sony Vita, but i don't think i have the energy to open that can of worms.
The Vita and wii u are in similar positions. Both go up against rivals with much larger support. However, the vita does at least offer comparable (if not superior) hardware.
I don't agree with many who say that the wii u's issue has nothing to do with the hardware. I think that's one of the biggest issues personally, because it's entire image is just wrong. It's touted as a new console with a brand new console price... it really isn't. It's thoroughly last gen + a pad. It's not able to go toe to toe with MS or Sony's new system, and unless a dev is willing to put in the time and effort, it can struggle to be just as good as their last systems (360/ps3)... all for a cost MORE than those last systems now sell for.... and they have huge catalogs of games you can get for cheap.
The wii was a perfect storm, maybe it looked worse... but you could, right from the start, go out and get it cheaper than ANY of the competition's SKU's, and bring home and set it up. The control scheme was something easy to market, and intriguing for many people to try out... it was also great at parties where people could pass around several games and have a blast.
That formula, timing + price + new, interesting to many, and easy to get into control + good/great advertising really clicked with the system, and held for quite some time.
You can't just try and pick and choose that. The wii u is almost the entire opposite of the wii... other than being underpowered. The control scheme is nothing new, nor is it something as easy to pick up for people who have never really done it before. It also doesn't lend itself to great advertising like the motion controls. It should have been marketed as a cheap and easy thing to get into. New, bit better than the 360/ps3 spec wise, and cheaper than either new (and some models used).
so wii = cheap, inexpensive, easy to get into, and well marketed to what it was.
wii u = cheap, too expensive, not as easy to get into, and poorly marketed for what it actually is.
Anyone buying a wii u and expecting it to be able to match up with the 360, ps3, xbone, or ps4 is going to be very disappointed. Anyone expecting it to be the wii is also going to be disappointed. The only people who seem to like the wii u are those who are completely satisfied only owning Nintendo games + a trickle of 3rd party games.
Me? I'm not content with that, not from any company. Look at Sega with the Dreamcast... they poured their heart and soul into that system trying to get people to buy it and play... they just lacked the financial viability to really keep it up or do more with it. When they finally called it quits it was pretty sad, and ended an era with their hardware.
I don't see Nintendo doing any of that. They have the money, the resources, the talent. They absolutely have the contacts in the industry to do some damned awesome things. But the only thing they seem to be pouring into the wii u is apathy... so for me? That's all they get in return. I will pick one up, absolutely. But unless they really show me they WANT people to buy this thing, and not just because they put another Mario/Zelda game out on it, then I'll be picking it up for a bargain basement price, which is much closer to what it should have been going for in the first place.

And there's obviously others coming out aside from those, both big names and smaller indie style ones. Their "wait and see" is just a matter of the games for their new console catching up.
Nintendo had the wait and see last year... it's now the second year, and they are still in "wait and see". "Wait and see" is over for them. Now it's time for them to show people they mean business and try and really get the markets attention, or continue to be apathetic about the system and let it sit back and be a platform for their IP's and almost nothing else.

I'm not the only one who has issues with these games. It has nothing to do with them not being on Wii U. It has to do with them generally being mediocre games.
Let's look at the 2 major PS4 Exclusives:
Knack - Average Metacritic 55, User Score 6.5 - A bland, boring platformer. Not much else to say about this one
Resogun - Average Metacritic 84, User Score 7.5. This one is actually pretty good, just not a system seller.
Again, the issue isn't related to the platform, it's related to the games themselves.
My personal interest in Bayonetta 2 is that I loved the first one on the 360. It has nothing to do with it being on the Wii U. If it was announced as a PS4 exclusive I would definitely be getting a PS4 ASAP. Watch Dogs overall looks like an interesting game. If it was an exclusive I'd probably be more inclined to get a PS4 or Xbox One. But it's not, it's multiplatform. My interest in either of those games has nothing to do with what platform they are on.Quote:

True, it doesn't have all the big multiplatform releases, but it does have more than those 4 Nintendo titles. There's also a bit more that I haven't listed. combine that with it's current library and it's really not a bad system to have. Yes the system needs more third party support, but as I've been saying that's a problem of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The only way that will change is if you can somehow get every Wii U owner to run out and buy Madden 13 and Call of Duty Ghosts for the system to get EA and Activision to take notice or something else equally ridiculous.
On the Wii U (Or any Nintendo Platform) third parties are competing directly with Nintendo's first party titles. If Wii U owners deem those third party titles to not be of good quality, they're not going to buy them. They're going to spend their money on Nintendo games instead. Just look at the sales:install base ratio of your average Nintendo game on a Nintendo platform. It's typically double or more than that of the best selling 360 and PS3 games.
On other platforms you're not competing with the same level of first party output that you are on Nintendo platforms. If third party developers want their titles to sell well on Nintendo's platforms, then they need to put out titles that can stand a good chance compete with Nintendo's titles. Was Mario, Paper Mario, Mario Kart, Pikmin, Metroid, Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Star Fox really enough for the average GC owner to almost completely ignore the PoP Trilogy, 4 Splinter Cell games (only the 1st game topped 100,000 in sales), 2 Viewtiful Joe games, 2 X-Men Legends games, 3 SSX games, just about ANY sports game, 2 Mortal Kombat games, 2 True Crime games (the closest thing to GTA on the system, but solid in their own right), and a handful of Resident Evil exclusives? Red Faction 2 and Timesplitters: Future Perfect are fantastic multi-player FPS options on the GC (IMO, the best options) that failed to reach 100,000 in sales COMBINED.
Even Resident Evil 4, which can arguably be considered a top 5 game on the platform, failed to hit a million in sales. What's even stranger is that high quality 1st and 2nd party games like Waverace, Star Fox, F-Zero, Eternal Darkness, and Metroid Prime 2 sold very underwhelmingly. It's no wonder that Nintendo isn't in a rush to get these series on the WiiU, even in the face of diminishing 3rd party support.
With 600-800 players online (on average) for COD:BO2 on the WiiU, can you blame Warner Bros. for electing to jettisson the online portion of Batman:Arkham Origins? What's the incentive to apply resources towards DLC for games no one is buying on the platform? I will completely agree that EA set their WiiU games up for failure (Mass Effect 3, in particular), but it's not as if EA games were selling particularly well in the past on Nintendo platforms, although Need for Speed might be an exception.
When even well-reviewed games like The Wonderful 101 and Rayman Legends are selling terribly (both hovering around 100,000 in sales worldwide) on a system in dire need of more options (moreso when they were actually released), it really begs the question: What the hell do Nintendo console owners REALLY want? I know what I'd want, but what I'd want sells like crap. I'm willing to wager that most 3rd party developers have been asking themselves that question for years, and I'm also willing to bet that most of them have simply grown tired of trying to appease that fanbase. They're certainly trying to find nice ways of saying that our games, no matter how good or exclusive, are just wasted on the platform.
If Watch Dogs sells like shit on the WiiU, even UbiSoft (one of Nintendo's biggest 3rd party supporters) will likely jump ship, only to appear when they've got another "Just Dance" game to sell.
I was about to write "OMG, if you own a 360, and judging by your tastes, you've gotta play Mass Effect" before I noticed that you bought the 3rd game for the WiiU. Wonderful 101 I blame on poor advertising. A lot of people don't know it exists and I've even encountered a lot of people being flat out stupid about it. Need for Speed is really the only game not in that category, but it's still an overdone annualized franchise. Need for Speed is a franchise that has hit sequel fatigue. You've got a few examples here and there, but the vast majority sold better on the xbox. There were 8 Tom Clancy titles released on the GC that all sold dramatically less than the Xbox versions. In fact, they sold so pathetically (5 of the 8 games couldn't crawl past 80,000 sales worldwide) that it's mystifying that Ubisoft continued to release them on the GC. You can't really say that Nintendo 1st party has a comparable alternative to Tom Clancy games (Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six).
All Call of Duty and Medal of Honor games (5 games in total) sold more than twice as well on the xbox. James Bond games seem to be the only gun games that GC owners seemed to like with any consistency, however, only 1 of 5 JB games (From Russia with Love) sold better on the GC.
Just to keep score. 17 of the last 18 3rd party multi-plats that I just rattled off sold better on the similarly selling Xbox, and most of it done in embarrasing fashion.
Wanna take a look at sales for EA sports titles between the two? I know you don't like sports titles, but it's pretty ugly. It's like 30-40 games worth of ugly. Just looking at those differences can start to paint a clearer picture of EA's slow burning frustration with Nintendo.
In fact, besides 1 Need for Speed game, 1 Burnout game, 1 Tony Hawk game, and 2 SSX games (keep in mind there's like 20 games between those series' alone), I don't think there's another 3rd party sports title on both consoles that sold better on the GC. This is A TON of games. Probably over 80 3rd party multi-plats, and I can only find 5 that sold marginally better on the GC. Even the 2 Simpsons driving games sold better on the xbox (oddly enough, the one published by EA sold dramatically worse on the GC).
Without even needing to go any further, it's really hard to argue that Xbox owners didn't support 3rd party games dramatically better than GC owners. I'm certainly not saying that nintendo console owners NEVER buy 3rd party games, but it's easy to see that they don't do it enough, and after 20 years of half-hearted and wildly unpredictable 3rd party sales, I'm certain that developers and publishers have taken notice.
Over the course of 5 years those 1st party alternatives don't really amount to much. Five years is a long time. What happens when I'm finished with those 5 - 7 games? I've had those odd crazy months where I've finished that many games. Besides, I'm not really sure why Nintendo would assume that I would be interested in buying everything it develops.Quote:

They have the money and resources to float the thing for quite some time, and if they make enough awesome games, and enough of the right moves, they CAN bring it back and make it sell. Sony made mistake after mistake with the PS3 for the better part of a year and they still managed to get back on course and kick some butt this last generation. It also allowed them to have a very good standing with the PS4. There's no reason whatsoever Nintendo can't do similar and at least have a respectable showing with the wii u.
Dreamcast was dropped weeks after the PS2 launch, and only because Peter Moore and Chris Belfield decided that it should be dropped. I doubt Nintendo is as stupid. And if they were I doubt they got someone willing to donate them a billion Dollars to save them from collapse like Okawa did for Sega.
The situations are vastly different for the companies. Sega was just about tapped out.. coming out of several "failed" pieces of hardware (Sega CD, 32x, Saturn). The prospect of a long and expensive fight vs Sony, when the general market had already made their choice just was not realistic to them.Quote:

The time for Nintendo to make the Wii U a platform with some lastability and third party support was prior to the release of the real next gen consoles. Now the Wii U is just a zombie waiting for a shot in the face.
The Famicom and Gamecube are the only Nintendo consoles which were appropriate for their time (either current or emerging gen).
They've almost always put out outdated hardware. At least the Wii U isn't making Nintendo customers buy the same console a second time with a new controller.
I'd like to see Nintendo put more effort into their console designs. They've tried selling consumers dated hardware with gimmicky controllers, got away with it for the Wii and not so much with the Wii U.
If the Wii U continues its current trend, maybe Nintendo could come out with a Wii U lite, that just comes with a pro controller and no gimmicky screen. They could sell it for $150 and the gamers that want to play Nintendo's games could buy the cheaper option. I honestly don't see the controller screen being used to its full potential anytime soon.
So the Nintendo Direct was pretty cool, and does make me feel that Nintendo is really trying to offer a lot of content. I give them a lot of credit, seeing that they're the only game maker tat cranks out so many games in one year.
Hyrule Warriors is an interesting concept. An online co-op feature would be great. DKC looks amazing! The graphical fidelity is next-gen. It definitely looks better than Knack.
Dr. Luigi was a nice surprise. It's not an entirely new concept, but it's nice to get a puzzle game. The "L" shaped pills add a nice variety, and changing your opponents pill colors will be fun. You also get a version of Dr. Mario and online modes.
NES Remix looks good, and the type of quick and fun game that people will be fighting for placing on the leaderboards (if they have any, which with this type of game should be a given).
Mario Kart and Smash Bros. I'm really not that excited for. Maybe future trailers will get me more excited, but I can't deny these are big games. Nintendo is certainly getting the content out and I hope that people respond.

I agree they should have been pushing harder their first year. But they can still push for a respectable generation for the wii u. That doesn't mean they will get it... but they can certainly give it their best shot. Right now I don't see them doing much more than talking to the people who already like them and own their system and basically giving them an "awe shucks guys, but we really wanted it to be like the wii!"Quote:

The SNES and N64 may have had a few things about their design that were not up to the competition (CPU and Cart format) but the overall system was every bit a match to their competition, and superior in other ways. I'm surprised they announced anything new at all. I thought they'd go over Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, and Smash Bros. again. At this time, they haven't announced anything past the first half (or quarter) of next year. So I'd expect an interesting Direct sometime by March, once these games have released or are close to release.
To defend Nintendo a bit, the Zelda/Dynasty Warriors could be interesting. It's being developed by Tecmo/Koei, so on that alone it should be a fairly new experience, even though it's in a familiar universe. Donkey Kong looks really polished and will be a graphical showpiece for its "last gen" power.
Nintendo is also supporting the eshop nicely, which is another point of soreness. Sonic Lost Worlds is getting free DLC. Dr. Luigi seems to be digital only, and so is NES Remix.
These are actions that show me Nintendo is trying to support the Wii U and that they're embracing digital games as well DLC and online gaming. All they can do i s hope that it's enough for people to buy it, and then attract more 3rd party games.
Off the top of my head, there are at least 5 games being published by Nintendo in the next 3 or 4 months, not to mention all of their support on the 3DS. One company cannot do much more, in my opinion.
