The problem is that anyone who plans to use the console the way Nintendo intends is going to buy a lot of stuff off the VC or other digital sales. 32gb is nothing, and the expense of an external HD is very inconvenient and makes the console less attractive than the competition, since you're spending more or less the same amount of money. Moreover, I don't even think the very audience Nintendo was counting on (casuals) even has the slightest clue about buying and connecting an external HDD to their WiiU.
